For an even closer analogy of the future, the story could have been that it wasn't war between man and the machines, it was just the fact that no one could afford to live a normal life, so we all had to plug ourselves in to a simulation because it was the only way any of us will be able to experience decent living standards. That, and renting yourself out as a battery is the only available "job" anyone has left because the economy imploded in a debt-vortex (unless, of course, you have some bitcoin, in which case you won't need to resort to such drastic measures Cheesy

Although this isn't actually true since over the course of a day, a single human body generates between 6000 and 10,000 BTUs. I guess Morpheus didn't specify a timescale to be fair. Maybe he meant 25000 BTUs a week, heh.
