Scrypt, yes. Outdated not at all, perhaps mature and well supported are more descriptive of the algorithm. Is scrypt broadly supported? Yes.

We don't want to reinvent the wheel here, rather we want to ensure the wheel is smooth, well oiled, and stable... fit for purpose.

Thank you for your reply, you got your point there and I respect it. There is nothing wrong with Scrypt and surely is widely supported, but as a miner what I dont like about the algo is the high temperatures and high energy consumption.
