Use the latest wallet, it has autosplit function. If transaction won't fit into one (dust, too large...) it will be split into more transactions.
I guess lot of people are still using the old wallets, we're seeing these "red errors" because of such peers.

If PC freezes you are most probably running out of memory. It's not a wallet problem.
