STR is far from dead. The only negative thing is that the price has fallen. But I believe STR is about to skyrocket, it's just a matter of time.

I think Stellar would eventually succeed because of the original concept of Jed to set up a community driven, no-profit organisation - giving away all Stellars. I had my inhibitions when I thought why Stellar and why not Ripple. Both has the same features but that is when I realized Ripple is primarily targeted for financial institutions and not users like us.
