But all too often people read flashy headlines like "address reuse considered harmful" or "USB is fundamentally broken" and rush into action.

Not at all. I just started using an HD wallet willy nilly without thinking about it at all. I often do this kind of thing when dealing with important things such as finances or important life decisions.
