Sometimes, yes. Other times, a company's value slowly dwindles to nothing over time. Gen 4 is a long way away and there is no guarantee of its success or profitability. I think AM should return to paying out dividends on a consistent, predictable, schedule, even if (hopefully only at first) these dividends would have to be very small. Even paying out a tiny dividend would demonstrate that AM is still working for its shareholders.

That is an absurd argument. What matters for the company is building value, not satisfying some speculators in the secondary market.
What you should care as an investor is that the long term growth is sustainable, and if a solid proposition for growth exists, you should be happy that the company has the chance of reinvesting profits to fuel its growth.
That means, no dividends for shareholders.

If you don't know the difference between stock price and value, you better stay away from investments.
