Doge has been one to of the best to short when it happen to pump.

You can short any top coins. ETH is the best one.
Agree on this one, ETH has dropped a lot and this is one of the best as well as of the moment. You can also buy it if you are going to go for long term instead of shorting it.

Bitcoin Diamond and Bitcoin Dark pumped as well but I'm not interested with those forks.
short altcoin in my opinion, x, achain, crypterium,
is perfect for you if you want short trade and short investment
Very interesting!

Any reasons why x, achain, crypterium make good shorts here?

Anything at the moment, it's all dropping, so there's a good chance that if you sell any coin for Tether and then buy back later, you'll be buying back at a lower price.
We are nearing the previously established bottom though of around $190b whole market, so there may be resistance there, but we shall see.
This is a good point about the 190b resistance.  I am really curious to see if we break through this to the downside.  If so, it's possibly a free-fall.

Here's a nice article that came out in finder.com recently: https://www.finder.com.au/meet-merit-the-invite-only-cryptocurrency-with-deliberate-friction

Unlike many other cryptocurrencies, "Merit doesn’t use wealth as a proxy for trustworthiness"
Just read this.  Very interesting.  Seems like a pretty balanced analysis (even a little overly negative/opinionated in some places.)

Quite interesting.

When I first came across this project, my immediate instinct was, "why does this need blockchain?"

After reading more about it, it does look like a pretty well-thought out message and a pretty interesting team.

But, I'm still sort of left with the same question.  What about this project actually makes it a good fit for blockchain?  If this was already asked, don't hesitate to point me to the answer.

The blockchain driven economy allows for smart contracts and provides meaningful reward-based token incentives to drive customer action.

many projects are trying to push through the green energy, but not at all it turns out as it should. im hoping this project will not repeat the mistakes of other projects that have encountered these problems before.
Umm, is this even a real response from a human?  Can you maybe provide some details about what didn't turn out the way it should?  What specifically should this project do differently?

I'd love it if someone has a chance to answer my question about "Why does this need blockchain?"

MERIT aims to be the most friendly currency in the world. In my opinion, the first thing is to find a way to make MERIT popular. Next, features easy to use, secure, economical ... in exchange, payment and asset management of everyone...
I agree with this -- I think someone was asking earlier about a partnership roadmap.  I'd like to see that too, because I think it will help with popularity.

I know there was discussion about major influencers too.

The incentive model is interesting, but not all of us are famous or interesting, so probably good to have some other marketing angles.

I agree that Merit is an interesting project -- no doubt that it's the most interesting I've seen in the last couple months here in the ANN section.

But, for all of you that have said you are going to invest *ALL* of your BTC into it -- I must say that this is totally inadvisable.

You need to think of your crypto as a full portfolio.  Just like with your normal stocks, you want to have a high-risk group and a low-risk group of assets.

While Merit seems really good as far as new altcoins go, you should limit yours investment to something reasonable.

http://merit.tera.tn and http://merit.samp.io successfully added to Pool Explorer:  Merit Pools

Wow, that was fast.  Exciting to see more pools pick it up.  It seems like distributing invites is going to be something that has to be added later.. is that right?

I'm concerned about exchange listings here.  With the amount of software and the caliber of the team, I would have expected it to be listed on a higher-end exchange -- maybe something like Binance or HitBTC?

During one of the live video chat's with Adil he mentioned that their focus was going to be on ensuring that the Merit Market was fully operational before pursuing any exchange listings, not because of the technical aspect of the listing, but in a coin's early stages, it causes the team or in this case, the Merit Foundation to pay absurd prices for such a listing and generally new coins end up on third-rate exchanges.  However, with the expanding user base and use of the Merit Market, volume baselines and interest can be established and it will allow them to skip the lower end exchanges and actually be pursued by the higher end exchanges and usually when this happens, the exchanges reach out to the team and waive the listing fee, so in the long run, I believe in this strategy.
This is actually a good reason to wait on exchange listings -- especially if they can pull it off.  I've heard that exchange listings are crazy.  Many cryptos do some kind of donation-drive for this.

Saving the huge fee would allow them to put that money somewhere more productive, I'd hope.

It's really exciting to see such a positive response here on BCT.  And I also appreciate all of the thoughtful questions -- and the constructive feedback.  I'm even more proud to see members of the Merit community chiming in and answering before a core team member has even had the chance to!

Anyway, I'll try to start knocking out a couple answers now.

How do MeritMoney Links Work? - From @scambuster and steener83
First, MeritMoney links are the same as the "Escrow" links that we put in the title and in the main announcement.  We used the term "Escrow" because we thought that it would be clearer and easier to understand for a more advanced audience like the one here on BCT.  (We are still working to build awareness around MeritMoney Links as a concept.)

MeritMoney Links have some interesting properties that enable people to easily send/receive MRT, even when the recipient does not have a wallet yet.  The tricky part in doing this, of course, comes down to doing it without centralization.

We actually implemented this at the protocol level with the creation of a new OPCODE that we call EASYSEND.  The idea here is that the user is able to use a decentralized (blockchain-based) escrow for any transaction they wish.  These transactions are signed by the sender, like any normal transaction, and sent to an intermediary escrow address, where they wait to be claimed or cancelled (if cancelled, they will be reclaimed by the sender.)

When a MeritMoney link is being created, Merit is creating a SecretKey under the hood will be used as part of the payload to claim the Escrow from the blockchain.  When creating the Escrow on the blockchain, the sender also has the option to add a timeout as well as a secondary password.  These will be assembled together to create the Escrow on the blockchain.

The recipient simply must produce the relevant secrets needed to claim the Escrow from the blockchain.  This will, at the very least, include the SecretKey and the expiration blocktime.  This same mechanism is used by the sender if they are going to cancel and reclaim the MeritMoney link.

So, if you, as a user are creating a MeritMoney link without adding a secondary password, then the link is as good as the money!  This is, of course, the way that fiat works -- a dollar bill is spendable as soon as you pick it up off the street.  The ultimate design of this on-blockchain  escrow is to make it easy for people to send small amounts of money to eachother.  If you are sending a large amoutn of money to someone, then it's a good practice to add a secondary password.  This way, if the link is intercepted, the bad actor cannot actually access the funds.

----

To make these escrows portable, we simply create a standard URI structure that can be used via the Web (as we do in our Web Wallet) or via a desktop protocol handler.  The application just needs to know how to assemble the MeritMoney link's secrets together to attempt to claim the escrow on the blockchain.  Today, our mobile wallets (Android + iOS), our Desktop LightWallet, and the WebWallet all know how to do this.

You can find more detail in the BluePaper in section 6.1 - Frictionless Transactions.

I hope that helps!
Very thorough answer.  This is a really interesting implementation.  Quite simple in the essence, but quite powerful with what it can do.

The addition of the password was the missing link for me.  My intuition was that the link itself could be intercepted, and then the money is stolen.  This is what I was worried about.  But, of course, any man-in-the-middle style attack can take money from people in a similar way.  (Eg, if I hack your email, I can hack your paypal just as easily.)

The additional password makes it so that someone can intercept the email, but gets no money.  Clever.

So, this project seems to have a focus on making crypto accessible and easy for everyday users, right?

So far, the wallets seem quite easy to use, and I can see someone less technical than me being able to use it without training.

But, a big part of everyday usage is to actual buy things.  Even though the team has a big eCommerce background, I don't see anything in the ANN (or website) about retail partnerships.

Is there a plan for this?  Or is the idea to just focus on PayPal use case right now?

I know I have heard the team ideating around how to approach this - I am not sure where they are at when it comes to the roadmap or things behind the scenes as testing or prototyping. This first wave of P2P seems to be the focus during this phase BUT they are very aware of the need for exchanges and retailers and Point of Sale applications for Merit to be used and adopted to the masses.

Maybe someone from the team can add more details on the roadmap side of this  Grin
Thanks for this answer -- I will also wait for someone on the Core Team to elaborate more.

It seems to me that there are two paths: 1) Getting people into crypto for the first time (helping them get other coins, possibly).  2) Allowing people to use crypto in their daily life, like buying stuff.
My interest would be in getting people to buy things.  To be honest, I don't think there is much of a market for any altcoins that are not in the top ~50 in the next 24 months.

So, to me, this coin would be especially interesting if it made it easy to buy things in the real-world.  Or, if it solved P2P sending more deeply.

If they are going to solve P2P sending (like Paypal), I cannot see it being done without some form of fiat-bridge.

Also, if you are not doing an ICO, how are bigger investors supposed to be able to buy larger bags?

What do people know about the Cuckoo Cycle by John Tromp?  I recently read about it in an Alt ANN, but hadn't heard about it before.

Memory bound; graph-theory.

Does anyone have any experience mining with it?  The concept of being memory bound seems similar to Equihash, but a bit different in its implementation.

claims to be asic friendly so it is worthless.

Sounds harsh but we don't need asic  friendly coins or algos.

If all the world is a perfect super highway (asics)  what good is it without cars too drive on it?(gpus)

Now does this mean I hate asics no I don't.

It does mean we need

Fpga coins
GPU coins
CPU coins

Wait, it's memory-bound, so wouldn't that mean that it would be very FPGA friendly?  I think that's what the statement sort of means on the github page, though I could be wrong.  It's ultimately bound by Memory Bandwidth... so it should be the super FPGA algo.

Was doing some research on this project and found some big press:

https://techcrunch.com/2018/05/09/a-modcloth-cofounder-just-launched-an-invite-only-cryptocurrency/
https://www.geekwire.com/2018/modcloth-co-founder-aims-create-worlds-used-cryptocurrency-new-startup-merit/
https://www.ethnews.com/when-crypto-and-esports-collide

All of the above seems to be legit -- which is surprising. With such big press, why not put that in the ANN itself?

Probably 50%, or more, of project ANNs are scams or semi-scams.  If you have something real, you should show that.

Just some advice...

The Escrow Links seem like a really good idea.  (This is what is called MeritMoney on the website, yes?  Or is that something different.)

Can I ask how those are implemented?  How do you keep an on-blockchain escrow secure from prying hands?

This is a really tough thing to do without some history of success behind you.

If you have a strong background of success, then you should really sell this when you reach out to people.

If you do not yet, you might want to consider friends and family?  These are generally the people who will believe in you most "before" you have had a big win in your career.
