I'm a community manager at tokeny, an upcoming token sale that will try to stabilize the ICO ecosystem and help entrepreneurs build sustainable and 100% compliant Token Generation Events.

Among our main concerns is educating investors and the project leaders on how to run a successful ICO and avoid the scammy/spammy aspects without taking any legal risks. So we have decided to craft a small ebook to introduce all the newbies and fresh ICO enthusiasts to what is currently going on, how ICOs work, what are the different dos and don'ts when generating tokens, etc..

I'm starting off with a relatively small budget, but I do want to invest in a few ICOs. However I have no idea what can be a potentially profitable amount, not necessarily short term, but in the long-ish run.

How much do you guys invest in an ICO that you believe in on average ?

Hearing about all the ICOs getting into trouble with the law after collecting the investment, doesn't that kind of thing cause losses for investors? And is there a way for non lawyers to check the legality of a given ICO when doing their own research so as to know if their investment is safe from government meddling ?

I disagree. An ICO campaign takes money to put in place. From preparing all the content to attending conferences to developer costs of designing the software and creating an alpha or an MVP, all those things cost money. What usually happens is that the ICO founder initially goes to small investors to get a certain amount that will help them launch a decent ICO campaign. Once they obtain that amount they divide it among various resources depending on where they see their priorities. So the salaries are not something fixed and I don't even think it's something ICO launchers discuss publicly. It's really up to each founder's discretion and the worker's willingness to work.

Then again, most ICOs will go for freelancers so you if you want to have an approximation check out the hourly rates of those positions on freelancing websites

While it is true that there's an insane number of scam in the Crypto world, and ICOs are definitely a large honeypot for scammers.
But other than the need to do your own due diligence and really vet every ICO you plan to contribute to, there are institutions and projects that are currently trying to make the world better for everyone by creating a safe (or at least safer) ICO environment.

The situation is kind of chaotic right now but it won't be for long

What I do is simply aggregate all the news feeds using feedly. I added every outlet that has the words ICO, Blockchain, crypto in it and now I get to see all the news from every relevant site every day. I have to say it does make things more streamlined and gives you the opportunity to compare the angle every news outlet is taking on a new event.

Aside from that, like justin86 said, twitter is cool too, it gives you the info fresh out of the oven if you're following the right people.

He means to keep up with their news and developments. Obviously follow their twitter and set a keyword alert in google so that you know right away when something's happening around their project. You'd also need to keep an eye on the news and see if any worthy competitors show up in the meanwhile.

Otherwise, a safe ICO in my opinion would be one that has a good smart contract, one that would return your money if the team fails to fulfill certain tasks on their roadmap. I would also pay close attention to their legal preparation, ICOs that don't pay much attention to their legal obligations may be exposed to high risk later on in their development which may eventually hurt your coin's price.
Some ICOs looked extremely successful at first too but then problems between the team members lead to a devaluation of the coin (Tezos). I would look closely at the arrangement the team has (if that info is available) with any partners and try to anticipate such problems as best as you can.

But all in all, the risk is always there, it's part of the very definition of investment.

Don't you guys have a website that advertises/explains your services ? If they are so helpful and effective, I think a website can only do you good!

I wouldn't really rely so much on ICO rating sites, a lot of them get paid for what they post making their evaluations potentially biased.. Your own research will often supersede what those sites come up with.. That is of course until a 100% reliable open source rating platform comes along..

I would research the team behind the project, see if they have any prominent competitors (or even better similar competing ICOs), I would also see the minimum amount of contribution and the amount of time the ICO will last to have a better idea on how they plan on collecting and managing funds, and if you're a blockchain expert (or have a blockchain expert close at hand) check the technical feasibility of the project since many projects out there are too ambitious and simply not achievable.

But first and foremost, I would do a google search and see how many relevant results I get..
