It seems like less work to just close the topic in question if it has already been answered satisfactory.

There also needs to be some sort of notification that a post has been flagged and/or deleted.

I've had 3 posts deleted that I can't even tell which ones those are.

If someone is doing a signature campaign then they need to post a certain number of posts a week.

If we can't know in advance that our posts will be accepted then they will just post more often which will result in more junk posts.

This whole situation can be avoided by just closing posts that have already been answered.

Re: [2018-04-16] Buyer Loses $278,000 USD in Bitcoin Robbery

Security issues aside I don't think it's unreasonable for the Singaporean police to examine the source of the funds in this case.

The buyer was purchasing about 35 BTC which is unusual.  It is even more unusual to purchase the BTC using cash in a hotel room.

Usually this type of Over the Counter (OTC) transaction would pay using a wire transfer and some sort of escrow service to make sure each side holds up their part of the arrangement.

Singapore is a major financial center which has a higher usage of crypto than in the West so I'm sure the police were wondering why this 'business transaction' was processed in this manner.

Re: [16-04-2018] Australian Woman Charged Over Purchase of Drugs With Bitcoin

I'm surprised there are still markets that use BTC as the medium for illegal transactions.  This is about 5 years too late.  It's been about that long since Silk Road 1.0 and 2.0 were taken down.  Was under the impression that these criminals moved to more privacy centric coins for this type of activity (IE: Monero).

BTC is poor to use for illegal activity since the chain is public.  The only thing private is the user's information.

However as other commenters have pointed out, it's easy to perform chain analysis to figure out who owns what wallet and what the transactions are for.

Re: [2018-04-15] Will Coinbase Report My Bitcoin Gains to the IRS?
by
Apex Investments
on 16/04/2018, 23:28:15 UTC
Yes, if you've made more than 20K in profits on your crypto then they will report it to the IRS.

Remember, you only pay crypto taxes when you sell so you won't owe anything on unrealized gains.

It's best to hold your crypto for over a year so you will pay the lower long term capital gain tax rate.

On a related note, I expect some adjustments to how crypto taxes are calculated in 2018.  Currently, you pay taxes when you sell but also when you convert from one crypto to another.  This isn't an issue with Coinbase since it doesn't offer exchanges but is something that needs to change since it adds a lot of complexity to tax filing for smaller investors.

Hopefully, we'll see some changes on this front with more Wall Street money coming into this space.

Call me cynical but I think Washington will listen to Wall Street's concerns more than smaller crypto investors.

Re: [2018-04-12] Coindesk - Bitcoin Breakout: Price Jumps $1K in 60 Minutes
by

Dollars to donuts this is the big institutional investors jumping into the space.  The price jump was accompanied by a huge surge in volume which is clear indication that someone big was buying.

Remember, there was news that both Soros and Rockefeller's investment funds were investing in the space so I think that we are starting to see the start of institutional investors in crypto which is a bullish sign for prices.

Re: There are some apps that can help you earn Bitcoin. Have you heard about it?
by
Apex Investments

Yeah those sound like faucets which give you a very small amount of BTC.  Unless you have a ton of referrals it doesn't make sense since you might earn a few dollars over several months.

Personally, I'm on one PTC (Pay to click) site and make a few dollars of BTC a month with over 700 referrals so this is a really inefficient way to earn BTC.

As some other people have said the best way to earn BTC is to either sell your services or do signature campaigns which is more difficult up front but provides a greater chance of a larger payout.

If I understand your question correctly, your question is how to get the word out about BTC.

In my view, the first step is making BTC easy to use for the average consumer.  That means easy to receive and spend.  There must be a solid utility behind BTC since the average consumer does not care about the libertarian arguments against centralized power.  They only care about ease of use and speed.

Currently, there are not many opportunities to spend your BTC to buy goods and services.  As such, most people either cash out or wait for the price to appreciate to their desired level before selling.   This is a serious limitation on adoption of BTC.

The main question people ask after hearing about BTC, is 'That sounds great, but where can I spend it?'

Before any marketing can be effective, people need to be able to spend BTC as easily as credit cards otherwise they will simply stick with the current system.

Re: Should I keep my BTC now?
by
Apex Investments
on 12/04/2018, 22:59:10 UTC
Yes, I would keep your BTC.

From what I've gathered online, obtaining forked coins is rather difficult and has a lot of risk in that you can lose your BTC by claiming the forked coins incorrectly.

One option you could do is invest the coins into an interesting project that has more upside potential which would have the added benefit of taking your mind off of the rollercoaster ride in crypto land recently.

Another option is you can use your BTC as collateral if you are needing the funds. Salt Lending is one option.  I haven't used them so can't recommend them to you but it's worth researching all of your options before making a decision.

Not sure where you are, but the taxes on selling BTC is crazy here in the US and this approach avoid taxes. Of couse, you would have to pay back the loan so that's something to consider.

I think the best thing is to stop watching it and find something else to focus your attention on for the time being.  My guess is you'll be glad you didn't sell 6 months from now.

Re: Only a mature and regulated crypto market will attract big investors.
by
Apex Investments
on 12/04/2018, 22:48:55 UTC
I think we are starting to see the first wave of institutional involvement in this space.

Pension funds, college endowments and other asset managers control trillions of dollars of capital so once the flood gates open its going to cause prices to surge.

Here's an interesting article on this topic:

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/04/12/this-could-be-the-year-big-investors-such-as-endowments-finally-buy-into-cryptocurrencies.html

I would expect to see a large increase in institutional investment over the next 6-12 months.

As with any investment, you want to be invested before the whales jump in and cause prices to surge.

Re: Factor to Consider
by

on 12/04/2018, 22:29:22 UTC
Crypto currency in general is highly impacted by adverse news as well as government regulations.  Since the market is immature with many smaller investors this tendency is especially pronounced.

One benefit of increased regulation is the arrival of larger investors into the space (Soros, Rockefeller to name a couple).

This should stabilize the market and ultimately lead it higher.

Investors that continue to hold and invest in promising projects should see large returns in this space.  There will still be volatility but will likely not be as pronounced as it has been the past month or so.

Re: Why do you want high price of bitcoin after all?
by
Apex Investments
on 12/04/2018, 02:01:32 UTC
High prices are good in that they generate more excitement for BTC.  Your point about the mining fees increases is a feature rather than a bug in the system.  If more people are using BTC then the network gets clogged and users need to pay more to have their transactions processed.

This is not a bad thing in that higher prices paid to the miners ensures transactions are processed promptly (relatively).

This is similar to oil/gas prices when prices are higher the oil companies make more revenue and divert it to investments since investments make more sense due to the higher price.  This increased investment causes prices to fall due to the resulting increase in supply.

Granted, oil/gas is a more mature market but the same economic process occurs in the crypto arena.  Personally, would prefer BTC to be $20k and pay higher fees than $7k and pay very little.
