It is the government and it's people who decide your definition of freedom. Almost two third of the world population has access to basic human rights and 60% have access to basic human amenities. However, if has become a trend these days to fight for trivial issues to be highlighted by the media. It affects the economy and the nation's interests drastically.
Then again, look at the people of North Korea. The things we can do out of our will might land them in jail. They are barred from accessing world news or visiting another country, even as a tourist. There are a plethora of meaningless laws imposed on those poor people living under a dictatorship. The world knows about these facts, but is unable to take actions. China is one such country to block the invasion of North Korea, as it finds its own needs fulfilled from their leader.
Back to your point, no, freedom can neither be fought for nor can it be achieved, it can only be defined. The people in North Korea, don't realize a word where they are free to live. They won't fight for something whose meaning is unknown to them.
