the fees are actually over $13 per transaction when you include the block reward! This averages out to only 0.5% of the total transaction volume which is pretty cheap for proven security.

The fees seemingly need to be pegged to a USD amount, or at least the protocol should be aware of the value of USD, respective bitcoin. I say this not to extol the supremacy of the dollar, but to peg the fees to a reasonable marker. USD is ubiquitous and already somewhat of a global standard. I love bitcoin going to the moon, but it sucks that the fees had to come along too

Stupidity, greed and stubbornness is a terrible combination. Unfortunately that is what the miners & developers are both showing with being unwilling to sit down together and get the scaling problem(s) fixed.
I am continuously amazed that such smart people don't understand that they are putting all of Bitcoin at risk, or certainly scaring off many new people with their silly antics to make a little moar money now at the expense of making much more later. They are all thinking like Goldman-Sachs banksters.

The problem isn't that miners and developers are greedy or stubborn. The fact that this became a problem with them is what shows a significant weakness in the system which must now be fixed. A weakness in bitcoin means a weakness for the miners and developers as well. If the fees become too much to bear, they will also lose out in the long run since the fees would mean less people using bitcoin, which means miners and developers get paid less, which leads to less development and solving of issues, and so on.Stupidity, greed and stubbornness is a terrible combination. I think this is a good thing, I'm more glad bitcoin gold because if digital cash equal to store numbers, much but its worth a little because it is always exposed to inflation.
As of now bitcoin is more on being gold because it is not yet accepted to the stores as a payment method because it is not that popular yet and bitcoin is just getting popularity from this past few months and the few countries are just starting to notice bitcoin as a potential currency so this time, bitcoin is just like a gold but it will be like cash soon.As someone who has been out of the bitcoin scene for a while and is just now coming back, is there any other reason besides change in price of BTC making transactions so expensive? lack of block space. there isn't enough room to include all transactions, so the fee to get included in quickly goes up. and the number of waiting transactions just grows.
as to segwit... yea, controversy. i don't think there really is a concensus. three sides, as i see it. those who want segwit, those who want bitcoin unlimited, and those who are sick of the debate entirely and want to just get on with something, anything, to solve the problem.
oh, and subgroups of "anything BUT segwit" or "anything but BU!" of course too.
People are waking up to the reality that the paper they have in their pockets called money is actually worthless and losing value all the time.

Bitcoin users basically say what they want to hear or see, but this is a completely different reality. If you do not see the value in the paper that is confirmed by gold it's a stock of the country at what price you always see in Bitcoin, which really is the air. As far as I know, if the transaction has already been broadcast and the fee that you included is good enough to be included in a block, you are out of luck. It is only a matter of time until the transaction gets confirmed, and you cannot stop that. The only way I see you recovering your bitcoin is if you contact the website owners as soon as possible and explain to them what happened.
I see many people in this thread trying to say that the dollar will collapse in the near future without giving any solid reasoning as to why. The USD is quite strong, especially in relation to other currencies in countries such as Russia and China in which it is losing its value. Hell, even the euro saw a drop not too long ago, but nothing similar can be said about the dollar.

When I said buying presents for others was fun, I was mostly referring to the part where they open them, not the actual buying process. That can sometimes get tedious.
