Would it be possible for the 'cheater' (for lack of a better term) to choose which transaction got confirmed after the result of satoshidice was shown?
Yes. Normally Satoshi Dice sends back its results a few seconds after you placed your bet. If it was a loss just try to get your double-spent transaction confirmed before your bet becomes confirmed.

You forgot that price is not just influenced by supply. Demand also plays an important role and will decerase if the price goes up.
Some users will buy more BTC weeks / months before the cut, because they expect the BTC/USD rate to go up, which creates a higher demand *before* the cut will happen.
Other users will sell their BTC after the cut to bring their profit home.

to broadcast the transaction to 3 peers you need to connect to a different protocol

Huh
You don't connect to a protocol, you connect to a server. If someone wants to use your service he'll have to connect to your server, so I can't see any difference.

I tried to copy blk* but the client on the new machine wasn't able to open the files.

error message:

Code:
Loading block index...

EXCEPTION: 11DbException
Db::open: Das Argument ist ungültig
bitcoin in Runaway exception

EnvShutdown exception: DbEnv::close: Das Argument ist ungültig (22)

("Das Argument ist ungültig" = "the argument is invalid")

Since the client on the old machine is working proper, the blockchain files shouldn't be corrupt.

bitcoind --connect=192.168.0.4 not working
by

Hello everyone!

I installed the satoshi client on a second local computer. Since I don't want to download the entire blockchain again, I tried to connect to my old computer with "bitcoind --connect=192.168.0.4"

Unfortunately the client doesn't open a connection to my other pc.
Since "telnet 192.168.0.4 8333" is working, I don't think that I have any connectivity problems. If I start the client without the connect option, the client works as designed (of course without an actual block chain).
Does anyone know what could cause my problem?

OS: Linux 3.0, Ubuntu 12.04
client version: 0.6.2-oneiric0

TIA

What's the benefit of "coin melting"?
If you just want to merge multiple "junk" inputs to one output, why do you add any tx fee at all?

can't restrictions be 3 hours instead?

I think 4h is not that bad - if you register as soon as you read this forum. But many users don't.
Why is it 4h online and not, for example, x hours starting with the first post?

Re: Transactions fees at this time

About spam.  To protect the network the protocol requires a fee of 0.0005 BTC if the inputs are less than 1 bitcoin day old*.  For example if you received 1 bitcoin and wanted to spent it you would have to wait 1 day to avoid a fee.  If you received 10 bitcoins you would need to wait 1/10th of day.  If you received 0.1 BTC and wanted to spend it you would need to wait 10 days.

Is this still true? I recently sent small values (3-5 BTC) wth inputs that had only 5-10 confirmations. Since the transactions got confirmed in the next 1-2 blocks, I don't think they were considered as spam.
