Issues with Bitfinex?
by

on 13/12/2017, 00:29:02 UTC
Hi all,
I've been reading on twitter that people are having a lot of issues with accessing bitfinex, and that there has been some hacking involved or something? I was thinking about starting a bitfinex account to trade with but now I'm worried. Are they safe?

IMO if you are afraid to take something out of the package then you aren't collecting it, you are just hoarding it. Part of collecting is that you get joy out of the object itself which usually means value-destroying acts like actually holding it or using it.

It seems pretty immature they cannot make unique address for each infection right? It would be much easier that way, then no communication would be necessary.
I would imagine having the infection calling back to a central server to get keys would be a big weakness, and if the program generated private keys they would have to be sent back to the center somehow.

Dumb question: if the attackers address is known couldn't their plans be ruined by dusting the address?

spot kitco ask silver London plus 1 USD per ounce...

I'm pretty sure the first half of that sentence was just random words. I understand the "plus 1 USD per ounce," though. Wink

I'll give you $2.25 over spot, K*ntinue..

Let me look up the spot price. Is there any particular website I should be using for that? I've never dealt in silver bullion.

As for the silver BP coins, it's on our list of things to do. Wink

Regards,
Chris
Lol, he was saying "use the kitco.com ask price for silver on the spot market", answering your question preemptively!

[Interest Check] Venetian Ducat - The Original Doge Coin
by
BreathOfZen
on 26/06/2017, 01:57:23 UTC
Hi all,
I'm curious to get your interest in this Venetian Ducat. This famous 99% pure gold coin was the de facto currency of Europe for over 500 years. Each beautiful coin features the reigning Doge of Venice, their chief ruler, kneeling before Saint Mark. On the reverse side is Christ with a dedication written along the edge of the rim. Uniquely among currencies the Venetian ducat never saw devaluation. A ducat minted in 1790 had exactly the same amount of gold, 3.545 grams, as one minted in 1290. This alone makes the Ducat one of the most unique currencies in the world.

This particular Ducat comes from the reign of Doge Francesco Loredan, 1752-1762. This is a very fine coin with minimal wear and a beautiful luster in the sunlight.

I very much look forward to hearing the extent of interest that you all might have in this coin, so let me know!

I bid .0025 on each set, 1 to 12.

Thank you! Bid confirmed.

2 days to go.

Can any of these coins be used today? Or do they belong to governments that are no longer? I wish you posted a description of each coin because I do not know what any of them are

From a quick glance they are all currencies or countries that no longer exist, which is what makes coins like this great. Which would you rather have: a 2012 USA penny, or a 1922  Czechoslovakia Korun?

Edited to add: if I had more skill and time I would make a line of physical bitcoins that take old coins like this and converts them to BTC, digging out a spot for a private key and overlaying the Bitcoin amount. There is actually a long history of countries reusing old coins in this way and it would look awesome.

Nice. Given the recent drama would you mind posting the address to send to? That way if you are hacked we will be protected in pm.

So here are my issues with the paranoia suspicions:
1. If Greenplastic is guilty, why would he hack the sellers account when greenplastic is the one sending the BTC? The seller wasn't going to send the item without payment so unless his plan was to guilt Godwine into sending the coins (a stupid plan) it makes no sense. Instead if his intent was to scam this auction he would have rather NOT won the auction, then hack Godwine and divert the buyer's BTC payment to himself.

2. If Godwine is guilty, why would he still be be posting on these forums? He would have had the BTC sent to him either way, and his reputation is totally ruined anyways for trading purposes. What is the point in trying to defend his name if it was just about the scam?

I think the most likely event is that some third party simply fished out Godwine's password as previously described, and is causing both parties to implode into paranoia right now as a consequence.

BreathOfZen, do you plan on "redeeming" it if you win?  It's quite a unique item, I'll be watching this one.

Probably not, after all how many people regret redeeming their Casascius's?

I was wondering due to the gambling aspect since it could be loaded with 1BTC.  You'll never know unless it's redeemed or the private key is exposed and checked.   Smiley

It's actually a fascinating innovation in coin making, I can't think of another type of coin where the inherent value (in gold, BTC or whatever) has a probability component. That it is a coin in the form of a cereal box is just funny.
