Everyone Wants to be an Instant Millionaire

From time to time I read these forums and it never ceases to amaze me how some people expect to multiply their wealth many times over overnight.

In mid-2010 I learned about Bitcoin and tried to learn as much as I could about it.  The ideology that it was founded on is one that I am fanatically a proponent of.  So in late 2010 I thought I wanted to support it and began mining whenever I could.  It was on a fairly small scale and was by no means a revenue stream for me, nor did I ever intend for it to be one.  Earlier this year year when difficulty rose, I mined Litecoin for some time, and nowadays if I have the chance to be back in my home country, I'll occasionally point my processing power at some obscure coin.

During this time I've watched the value of Bitcoin rise from well under $1 to $32.  Then price declined quickly to below $2.  Shortly thereafter price rose quickly to around $266 but then quickly declined to $68.  Most recently price went well above $1000 and quickly declined to $400.  The same dramatic price movements could also be seen with Litecoin and most other coins.

Only just over a week ago did I sell 2 Bitcoins for the very first time ever.  If I had sold them when I mined them, I would have pocketed about $1.60.  Instead it was x1000 that.

I don't see these dramatic price movements ending any time soon.  If you look at the trends in price since the inception of digital currencies, there is huge volatility, but one thing I can notice is that the majority see a substantial rise in value in the longer term.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is that if you feel that getting involved with digital currencies will make you rich overnight, you're in for a bad time.  If you are holding any coins, my advice would be to adopt a different mindset other than greed and impatience.  I've read a lot of articles where people have sold everything they own at the bottom of 'crashes' only to watch prices rise substantially only days later.

Take the stress out of the game by storing your wallets offline and forgetting that they exist for six month, one year, or two years.  You'll most like be pleasantly surprised.  If you need to cover your day to day living expenses, get a job.  If you think you can mine for a living, look at charts for mining profitability over time.  You will notice that there are extended periods of time where most people are mining at a loss and are either mining for future value or because they want to support an ideology.  A job or other revenue stream is the only way to get through those periods.

I didn't mean to ramble on here, but take from this what you will.  Study, learn, be patient, and take a lesson from history.

What is your banks country? Also, if you are EU resident, I can advice you fly to Lativa let's say and open few saving accounts there, and explain on interview that you'll have some large transfers coming.

Funnily enough, my primary account is in Latvia.  This is where I hope to send the funds.  I have accounts in Ireland, Malta, Germany, Australia, Canada, and China as well. (Probably others I've forgotten about).

From prior experience, transferring anything above around 10,000 has caused problems for me in the past.  Of course breaking up the transaction into smaller pieces if probably safer for at least a few reasons, but I also don't want to be waiting a half year either.

I've considered opening an account in Luxembourg or the BVI, but need to do a little research on that.  That's not for the sake of trying to avoid taxes however.  I'm not bent on spending time in prison.

You will have to pay taxes for such a big amount. Other than that it is fine.

I don't even know where to begin searching for tax information.  All the coins I have, I mined.  In any case, my main concern was a hold up with the banks.

Perhaps this is the wrong forum for this type of question and I should speak directly with my bank first, as well as an accountant.  It's my first time converting coins to fiat so it's a bit new to me.

Wiring larger sums from exchange to bank account
by

I'm finally looking to exchange a few of the BTC I've been holding on to for the last few years as I need some money for a new startup.

I've registered and verified an account with Bitstamp and made a test SEPA withdrawal for just under $2000.  Everything went fine and I received the funds in my account.

The sum I'm looking to withdraw now would be around 1 million USD.  Since the average balance and transactions of my bank account have never really exceeded a few thousand euros, I'm worried about setting off some alarm bells.

Has anyone had experience with this?  Is there anything I should be aware of to avoid any hassles?

I've had problems in the past with bank accounts being frozen since i travel constantly and send money worldwide regularly.  It was some anti money laundering measure they had in place and I had to convince the bank that I was really just sending funds to myself for living expenses abroad.  Took nearly three months to resolve that last time and I would like to avoid this if I can!

I'm assuming it would be your peer on the older version.  Did you try sending a coin?  I imagine it should work fine and you can ignore this warning.

EDIT:  Sorry I missed that you've tried sending a coin.  Are you running a GUI?  Can you try the qt?

I've seen some very odd behavior, in particular with Coinchoose.  I would be wary of any sites like this that also manage their own pools.

Why not do your own research?  I find that picking two or three coins that I feel have potential and sticking with them has been the most profitable way to go.  This way you can follow them closely, know when diff changes are about to occur, and have a better feel for the market direction at any given time.

Multipool's go against the greater good of the community as a whole.  They often bring in 10x the normal hashrate of the coin then abandon it when the difficulty rises.  This leaves the coin stuck in a state where blocks are being solved far less frequently than intended.  This is good for no coin.

Even ASIC manufacturers have the decency to give up huge profit potential by only selling and shipping a limited supply of ASICs to the market to battle this kind of disruption.

OP, you're actually trying to make a serious post to rebut something you read in a troll box?  Huh

Look at Litecoin's chart.  Those that cannot see the long term uptrend of this coin are blind.  The volatility we're seeing along the way is just an opportunity for some additional returns.

by

i dont have it
and if would there is no chance i would be dumping it because clearly investors believe in this coin.

when i look at the forum i see a lot of talking about valued coins, and i then look them up and see if they worth investing.
but this coin.. tops all other in % growth. and its kind of steady.

so why not talking about it?

There's a lot of pumping and hype about coins on this forum that bag-holders are looking to dump on exchanges.  They're trying to force feed others a shit sandwich.

You don't hear this kind of crap about Ezcoin because it has been around for almost 9 months and has had much more time to mature than all the coins you're seeing pumped and dumped in the last while.

Looking at the specs of this coin, it seems to have nice specs.  Reasonable block reward as well as good difficulty adjustment which will adjust rapidly to spikes in the network hashrate.

Re: "BTC Is backed by nothing while the USD is backed by 'full faith' of US gov't"
by

Bottom line is USD is ultimately backed by force, by guns, if you live in the USA and you have wealth you need USD to stay out of prison, pretty powerful backing if you ask me, people tend to value their liberty a lot , now you can argue that initiation of force is unmoral all day long , but it is what it is.

Bitcoin is backed by market demand only, all of us promoting it because we believe in it's value as a currency, but this believe is not as rock solid as the power of the US government to force people to use the $

I suppose to you I am forced to steal from jewlery shops because they display wealth something I don't have.

Or maybe I am 'forced' to use USD because I would definitely use fucking rmb or euro instead if I don't want to go to jail in US.

Get over yourself. Always bitching about how you are 'forced' to do something because you are incapable, when that 'forced' party is practically offering gold for 1% of your time on yearly basis.
Well if you know of a way to not pay taxes and not go to jail  , please let me know  Smiley

If you know anywhere a nation that doesn't prosecute you for not paying taxes, you let me know too Smiley

In the mean time, try not use gas, electricity, public road, public transportation, and public park, not to mention water and sewage either. You hate things provided by the tax dollars, I think. So funny of you to not take such things seriously when you are sitting pretty bitching about inconveniences in your developed world mentality.

How about no taxes?  BVI.  They have roads too! Wink

Re: Time for an Alt Cryptos [ANN]Sub- Forum???

Bitcointalk advocates Bitcoins only for mindless reasons. IT doesn't believe in superior technology, it just sticks with the legacy.

Migrate to http://cryptocointalk.com/

How is it mindless?  This is BITCOINtalk after all.  Sorry it seems so biased to you.

How many kids in the alt sub-forum misuse tags anyways?  There are forums like cryptocointalk that are purpose built for your favorite alts.

I miss the days when there was actually some interesting discussion about ideas here.

Nice tutorial Instacash.

Unfortunately the difficulty is so high at the moment that even the pool you used as an example only expects to find a block in 7.64 hours.

I can only guess that a swarm of botnets have jumped on this.

You can obviously understand English so why would you not give credit to the developer of your pool?

"When you decide to use MPOS please be so kind and leave the footer intact. You are not the author of the software and should honor those that have worked on it. I don't mind changing the LTC donation address at the bottom, but keep in mind who really wrote this software and would deserve those ;-)."

This is the reason I won't go near any of your pools.

You gain nothing by stealing credit and only reflects poorly on yourself.  Credibility is important in this community and you're losing it.

Re: Powercoin 51% Attack
by

What does this mean for coin holders?  Is Cryptsy going to be covering the losses, or are they still solvent?

Why would cryptsy cover the loses? Powercoin holders took the risk of dealing in something so unstable. They are the ones that 'cover' the losses.

Well they did give the all-clear and started trading Powercoin again after it was known that a 51% attack had taken place.  They were exchanging coins that didn't even exist.

"BigVern @cryptsy
It appears there was in fact a 51% attack on powercoin around the 15th/16th.  The individual responsible came from a China IP address"

Wow, I'm glad I sold my Powercoins when I did!

May I know where to sell Powercoins ?

No exchange lists powercoins.  It apparently suffered a 51% attack.

Re: Did the lack of powered risers cause this?
by

I believe pci-e devices are powered by the 4 pin (or 8 pin) power connector, so this doesn't make sense.

Edit:  Also, it seems you've had a short between the 3.3v rail and ground.  PCI devices would utilize the 5v rail.  This doesn't appear to be caused by too many graphics cards onboard.  I've run 4x 5870's severely overclocked in each rig without any powered risers for months straight without any issues.

Is PWC killed? I just sync'd my PWC wallet, and it is in sync with 29945 blocks downloaded, there's no issues at all. All my previous transactions are there, and balance is intact.

So it does not look to be that it is killed.

If you don't mind the fact that now one guy has more then half of all PWC coins and thus can crash any exchange market at any time for as far in the future as you could imagine- then by all means. Enjoy.

Anyway, it is not killed, no records/transactions are altered, all balances are fine, and you see the blocks are increasing at about the block time, meaning people are still mining it. No sign at all it is killed.

If you're mining PWC, you're pretty much the attacker's bitch.  If you work hard and somehow bring up the value of PWC now, he'll be the one reaping all the benefits.
