Re: Is trading gambling in another form?

Gambling is pure chance.

There are several different types of trading:

1. Buy and Hold. Long term traders who are actually more investors. They buy and hold it for a few months to a few years.
2. Day trading. Short term. They buy and sell within a few days. Not very often in the same day.
3. Scalping. Usually forex, but now we them in crypto. They buy or sell within minutes or even seconds.

The traders do all sorts of technical analysis and where you see all those charts with drawings.

I really don't know what yo make of that tweet. So, I decided to ask here. How true is that because I believe next halving will be in 2024.

Source

What a moron. This guy is only good for TA in a bull market, with UpOnly analysis.

Reward-Drop ETA date: 03 May 2024

Source: https://www.bitcoinblockhalf.com/

(His broken source has already re-calculated back to 27 March 2024)
Oh dear! What inconsistency from that site. It has gone to April now. From March 27th, 2024 and then April 5th, 2024. Shouldn't that be a joke or is there something I ain't getting here?

The difficulty is recalculated about every 2 weeks, the hash rate is estimated every block or so, then they use those values to estimate the halving date. When blocks get solved faster more often, the estimated date moves closer or earlier.

As of this post, the ETA is back to May 2024. I wouldn't get too excited about the exact date as we won't really know for sure until about a few months before it is supposed to happen. It may happen earlier or later, usually earlier, but more than 4 months earlier is kind of stretching it. The bitcoin network will recalculate difficulty to adjust for increased hashrate, so estimates might move in 2 weeks, then it will try to normalize. The target will always be as close to May 2024, but nevermind the date or time, it's the block height.

All these count down websites still calculate based on the block height.

It's like saying, wait for 1 block or 1 confirmation, but that does not necessarily mean wait for 10 minutes; most of the time it will be close to 10 minutes, but we all know it can be 1 minute or 1 hour before the next block. The same with halving block. It's still going to be May 2024. April or March 2024? Possibly. But 2023? Very unlikely. Not impossible, but not likely.

Like, in the winter months, or when it is very cold, I have a hoodie and neck warmer or scarf that partially or completely cover my face except for my eyes. But everyone in the area has something very similar.

For those who carry concealed, colder climates allow you to dress more like everyone else too while being able to carry more "stuff" without standing out too much, or at all.

Yeah, about the mask thing, what I meant is that, as long as I can see a few other people still wearing it (and this is just the medical mask type thing, usually colored light blue or white or black, can be N95 or just other types), then I'll just be like everyone else and wear a mask in public. Because a lot of other people still wear it, and you don't stand out.

But when you're the only one wearing a mask, then it might be a good idea to switch tactics, or do something else to "protect your privacy" while not sticking out like a sore thumb.

The whole point is not to completely cover your face, I mean, no one goes out wearing a Mandalorian (Boba Fett?) helmet you bought from toys-r-us, unless you have the whole costume.

They have those little hats or glasses with IR light bulbs on them, but that also sticks out when seen by security footage. As in, they will literally ask who is the light bulb walking around.

When you are walking around in the "outside" world, you can expect there to be no privacy at all. Everything you see, and everyone who can see you, just think there are cameras everywhere, everyone has a cell phone, and every building has CCTV. Once you are aware of that, you just do your best to blend in like everyone else, like the millions of other people who don't seem to care. If you wear a cap or hat, shades maybe, and a mask to cover your mouth, then automated systems will have a very difficult time to consistently identify you.

Earlier this month, I and others wrote a letter to Congress, basically saying that cryptocurrencies are an complete and total disaster, and urging them to regulate the space.
..

I am a big fan of Bruce, have read all his books (well, actually not true for "Applied Cryptography" which in parts is much above my comprehension, but I tried it too) and so far all his writings have been a great inspiration and education to me, but I do not agree with most of the points he makes here. For example, he doesn't seem to get the difference (or that there is a difference at all) between POS and POW and quite a few other misconceptions AFAICS.

Anyway an interesting read to know what the crypto guys (<- cryptographers, batslap not applicable!) think about BTC, the discussion below the article is the most interesting part IMHO.

I actually found a nice clean copy of Applied Cryptography 2nd edition in a thrift shop, selling for about $5. I opened it, read some parts, leafed through it, but ultimately did not buy it since I don't have any space at home to keep it, LOL. It will probably be still there next time I go.

@Dabs: I don't know if it was you, can't remember. If it was you, I hope you weren't affected by the recent events.

My golden rule: there is no free lunch is this universe. Don't fall for what looks too good to be true, because it almost always is. Even Bitcoin could be called "too good to be true" by those who do not understand it. It is one of the few exceptions to this rule.

I mentioned it in passing, but someone else may have already mentioned it. At that time, it was one of those "big" things that had funding from outside investors and it has been going on for at least a couple of years already, so it wasn't exactly new. And then you have something like Gemini Earn, which is from the same company that also runs the Gemini exchange, which is probably fairly regulated and secure as far as holding coins for you goes. I still would not keep any coins on exchanges long term.

I did not have anything in Celsius, but the crash that happened affected us all anyway. I was forced to cash out at the wrong time to pay for bills and expenses.

I may have mentioned Celsius, but I also mentioned it together with Nexo and Gemini Earn and even BlockFi, and at the same time all the centralized exchanges, which implies the supposedly common knowledge of "no your keys, not your coins".

I myself don't have anything in Celsius, but I was asking about it since they had, at the time, the interest rates for keeping the coins there.

Before this, I had never heard of Voyager and vaguely remember 3 arrows.
