I PM'd you a few questions, but as long as shipping isn't crazy expensive I'll take one of the EVGA 1080Tis for $325. Smiley

I've been looking for a new graphics card for a while, and 1080Tis are currently >$500 on eBay. Mined cards are generally worth a bit less than normal used cards due to runtime, and a lot less if they were overclocked. If you're willing to sell it for $400, I'll be interested, but you won't find any buyers at your current price.

I'm interested in the EVGA 1080Ti SC if it's still under warranty and you're willing to sell it for around $400. No worries if that's too low for you, I'm mostly just waiting for Black Friday deals right now but figured I'd make an offer.

Sent you a message with an offer. I've been looking to upgrade from an R7 260X for VR gaming and machine learning (tensorflow doesn't support AMD cards...), one of these would be great for that. I was looking at 1080s for ~$300 but this would be faster and I won't have to wait for Black Friday deals to get one with decent cooling.

Re: Possible BitcoinTalk Forum Spoof?
by
Dare

It's running from a dynamic IP address (no-ip.org is a dynamic DNS resolver) and it's mimicking bitcointalk.org, so it's probably a phishing site intended to trick people into providing their bitcointalk passwords and downloading some sort of malware. Removing the "css" parameter from the link resulted in a different website, so there are probably multiple phishing sites with different targets running on the same server.

Re: Does this forum allow VPN usage

If you scroll down to the bottom of any page on the forum, you'll see a little note saying "Sponsored by Private Internet Access, a Bitcoin-accepting VPN." Since the forum is sponsored by a VPN, and so many of its users use Tor, VPNs, and other methods of anonymization to ensure their privacy, it would be rather surprising if the administrators decided to block VPN use. As hilariousandco mentioned, some VPNs and particularly Tor can result in a small fee when creating a new account (to prevent spam), but you can avoid this while preserving your anonymity by registering from a library or coffee shop if necessary.

To quote myself from the last time this came up (yes, it's been asked at least this many times; there are currently two Meta threads asking this same question, even):

Any progress?

Please turn off this forum! The avatars are the only advantage over a mailing list. This is bitter but true. Give something better a chance. Give up!

I'm pretty sure that avatars will be disabled until at least the new forum is out and being used - as theymos has stated it was removed due to an exploit made possible by avatars and though I believe the exploit has been patched he is not keen on restoring the functionality.

From what I've heard, pretty much. The exploit involved uploading a php script instead of an image into an executable directory, then using it to put some (slightly) malicious Javascript into the forum's MOTD so that it ran on every page. I followed the troubleshooting and analysis through IRC while it was being fixed immediately after the hack, but it seems that avatars may be disabled for a while anyway.

Though the exploit used has been patched, it's been long enough that I suspect new avatars may remain disabled until the new forum software is put into place, but those who had them before the hack like me were able to keep them (though we can't change our avatars either).

Official response on the ETA of the new forum:

Q: Why doesn't the forum let me add an avatar?
A: The forum was hacked some time ago. It is thought that the avatars were used as a means of injecting malicious code into the forum. Even though the vulnerability was patched, the avatars will be disabled until a new forum software is released.

Q: So when is the new forum software coming?
A: Well, according to theymos, some time after February 2015.

When will the software be finished?

About one year from now.

You're supposed to sign the message with a bitcoin address, not a GPG key, though if you claimed ownership of the GPG key in a public post on your main account it should still work (I'm not sure if signatures count). Also, you need a link to the post from your main account with the address or GPG key in it; otherwise there's no way to verify the key is really yours.

For more information, see this thread (though I suspect you already have): https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=497545.0

Actually you can find the following sentence in that thread.

"Typically, the only acceptable method of proving ownership is by signing a message (including current date and desired new email address) using a Bitcoin address or PGP key associated with the account."

Whoops, missed that; it does make sense, since GPG is well-known security software (which is why I mentioned that it would likely be fine), but I forgot that it was actually in the post.

Also, upon re-reading the post, I noticed that it does mention signatures (emphasis mine):
Quote from: theymos link=topic=497545.msg5473531#msg5473531
A Bitcoin address or PGP key is associated with the account only if the account posted the key/address, sent it in a PM, or if it is still listed in the account's profile.

Since his Bitcoin-OTC link is still in his main account's signature (profile here, and it's listed under the username of the account he used to post here), the request should be fine as long as the GPG signature verifies (which I'm still figuring out how to check, I haven't worked with GPG much before). Usually I only see these posts from users who haven't bothered to look for the format, so this one is rather refreshing.

To the OP: Have you tried contacting theymos again times? He's said that he tends to drop requests if he can't get to them within a few days, and with the amount of PMs he probably gets I wouldn't be surprised if that happened a few times.

Re: bitcoin-qt won't shutdown?
by
Dare
on 28/10/2014, 01:30:37 UTC
Lol, after reinstalling and all of that, it still won't shutdown correctly but now I can't send.. I get an error about creating new addresses when I attempt to..      Grin

trying to reindex to see if that will correct it..    err...   just after that started it spat out an error about opening the wallet.dat..      I'll figure it out eventually and send it off to another wallet..   is there any chance bitcoin will go back up to previous levels?..  might not be worth it if not..    Thanks again..

It sounds like your issue may be with your wallet.dat, and not with the client itself. Try starting bitcoind with the "-salvgewallet" paramete (back up your wallet again first, especially if you haven't done so already!) and see if it helps. If not, try renaming wallet.dat to "wallet.dat.old" (with Bitcoin-Qt closed) and see if it responds properly with a clean wallet (if the client can't find a wallet, it will automatically generate one, hence the rename).

You should report posts that you think are spam or break the rules and threads that are in the wrong category. Reporting insubstantial necroposts is also advisable, but that's more of a personal opinion than forum policy. For more specifics on the forum's rules, take a look at this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=703657.0

Re: Adding banner to signature ?
by
Dare
on 27/10/2014, 22:41:38 UTC
BBcode is used for formatting, which allows for colors, size, and layout, and some signatures contain unicode characters to display symbols. You can't display a picture in your signature, but BBcode is plenty for simple banner advertisements. If you want an example, take a look at the BBcode used for the advertisement in my signature: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=530420.0

Re: bitcoin-qt won't shutdown?
by
Dare
on 27/10/2014, 02:32:44 UTC
Does the main window of the application not close when the popup dialog appears? On my system, the main window closes before the popup (though the entire process takes about a second in total).

From your log, it looks like it's partially shutting down, but not closing completely (some threads are exiting, but not all). The last few lines of my debug.log after shutting down Bitcoin-Qt look like this:
Code:
2014-10-27 02:24:59 Requesting shutdown
2014-10-27 02:24:59 Running Shutdown in thread
2014-10-27 02:24:59 opencon thread interrupt
2014-10-27 02:24:59 addcon thread interrupt
2014-10-27 02:24:59 dumpaddr thread stop
2014-10-27 02:24:59 msghand thread interrupt
2014-10-27 02:24:59 net thread interrupt
2014-10-27 02:24:59 Shutdown : In progress...
2014-10-27 02:24:59 RPCAcceptHandler: Error: The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request
2014-10-27 02:25:00 StopNode()
2014-10-27 02:25:03 Shutdown : done
2014-10-27 02:25:03 Shutdown finished
2014-10-27 02:25:03 Shutdown result: 1
2014-10-27 02:25:03 Stopping thread
2014-10-27 02:25:03 Stopped thread

My best guess is that something got corrupted and is preventing it from shutting down cleanly. If you haven't tried it yet, reinstalling the client will probably fix it, otherwise deleting everything it the datadir except your wallet.dat and the "blocks" directory might help (if you have a custom config file, check to make sure it's correct rather than deleting it). You may need to start Bitcoin-Qt with the "-reindex" parameter to rebuild the chainstate afterward, though it will likely do so automatically (it won't need to redownload anything if you leave the "blocks" folder there, but it may take several hours to finish processing the blockchain).

Re: dedicated server

on 26/10/2014, 22:32:09 UTC
Hello i m buying 3 dedicated server cpu and 1 gpu server dedicated tell me is this profitable i m new to this kindly tell me the minimum server requirement to bitcoin or litcoin

As this is the technical support forum and not mining support, I'm assuming you're asking the minimum requirements to run a full node; if you're trying to mine with them, you'll be lucky to get a few cents a month. ASICs are the only profitable method of mining at the moment, and even then it can be difficult to reach ROI.

For Bitcoin, you'll need a minimum of ~50GB disk space, as the blockchain itself is nearly 30GB, and at least 1GB of RAM if you want to be able to run anything else besides bitcoind (for reference, my instance of Bitcoin-Qt is currently using ~320MB of RAM). A fast CPU isn't too critical, but a >2GHz dual-core or above is advisable since they're relatively cheap.

I can't speak for Litecoin as I don't use it, but its system requirements are probably similar to those of Bitcoin (though it will likely use less disk space). You could run both on a Linux box with the specs I mentioned above without much difficulty.

Can membership level drop due to inactivity?

No. You just lose activity due to inactivity, so you could miss out on being upgraded faster.

You don't lose activity if you are inactive, but if you don't post in any given 14-day period then it isn't added to the "time" value of the activity equation.

The activity number is determined in this way:
time = number of two-week periods in which you've posted since your registration
activity = min(time * 14, posts)

Activity is updated every hour.

This thread has more information on the specifics of activity calculation and forum rank requirements: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=178608.0
