I like to hide in the quilt and play with my phone every night. Although it is bad for my eyes and metabolism, it makes me feel happy.

Re: Is it normal to not want to work at all?

I feel exactly the same. I cannot understand people that say if they won the lottery they'd get bored. That's insane to me. I have so many books I want to read, films to watch, video games to play, countries to visit, raves and festivals to go to. Why would you rather work instead of doing those things?! I want to start a family but what's the point when you only see your child in the evenings and weekends when you're all tired?

I was home educated but my parents are hippies and me and my siblings had no formal education. We just hung out. Played games, saw friends, went swimming in the river, read books, played with our cats. We'd visit castles or towns we've never been to. Make beer, take photographs, paint. I miss being able to do whatever I want.
If I won the lotto, I'd road trip for years. Have one nice home near my family in NY and get a few condo units around the country for seasonal trips (like in Disney FL, Wilmington NC, Denver CO, Laguna Hills CA).

Visit every national park and practice my photography skills

Disney World - whenever I get the urge

Travel to every concert and music festival I'd be interested in

Dogs....soooo many dogs

Motorcycle tours of our nation's most scenic roads

Go fishing

Explore the best dining experiences in every region

Re: Anyone else grow up poor but are better off now and it feels weird to buy things

I grew up poor and often times I find myself caught between wanting to buy something expensive (especially if it’s something that I’ve really wanted for a long time) and hardly spending any money because I’m so used to being in a seemingly perpetual state of saving money. If anything, it feels weird making smaller and usually wasteful purchases for things (which do add up in the long run) that I may regret. Regardless of how much it costs I’m always seriously evaluating its value to me either while I’m saving for it or as I’m hesitating to click a purchase button. It’s mainly why I don’t have any active subscription services right now.

Re: Why am I so handsome in the mirror but so ugly in a photo?
by

It's none of those things.

What people see is subjective to each individual.

Our attraction to photographs is actually somewhat conditioned and artificial, as we have a totally unrelated experience of people in person, when we can see them in 3D and animated.

What people see of you has a lot less to do with how you actually look in a way that could be captured by a photograph, and a lot more about what animates you from within.

As far as you're concerned, though, unless your type (romantically/sexually) looks like you, it's none of your business how you look.

Re: Is it weird to wake up 2 hours before anybody else to have time alone?

Here is the thing. Even when you love someone dearly, you need time away from them.

My father went from a 5 day workweek to a 4 day, with the free day being on a day my mother works. She was annoyed at it first, because " Don't you love me and want to spend time with me." After thinking about it she understands. She likes having time just to herself as well.

They love each other dearly, go on walks at the end of each workday, having weekends away with just to two of them.

Just having some time to charge up and not having to deal with anybodies shit.
My husband and I try to give each other "a day off" from each other every once in a while. We usually plan outings with friends or family while the other stays home. It's a win-win for us because we can still strengthen our other relationships while giving our partner space. My husband and I love each other dearly. He really is my best friend, but sometimes it's nice just having the house to myself and I know he feels the same.

Re: What are subtle red flags at a job interview that say "working here would suck"?

Last job I worked.

"Yea, everyone here is new, but it's totally because of covid"

"The boss doesn't like people going out to get lunch because they're afraid you'll never come back, so being your own lunch"

"You'll get weird looks if you leave on time". It was a chinese owned company with heavy chinese work culture influence so you were expected to stay overtime all week.

Also "the people here are nice but it's pretty stressful".

Eta: also was told by my trainer "you want to know the best advice I can give you? Find another job". This was like...my 2nd week in.
6.0k
at indian and chinese companies you are expected to work longer hours for less and when it is time for a review they diminish your efforts so that they can keep the salaries lower and funnel the money to their management bonuses. if you work less but do more during those hours that will only mean that you will get a lower salary.

swedish companies are like that too. when it is time to get rid of people they do all kind of harrassment so that you will leave yourself and they do not have to pay out anything you are entitled to according to the law. the retarded commie way.

Re: What is your job and what does your day in the life look like?

I'm a homeowners insurance claim adjuster. I handle mid to large size claims (usually fires, burst pipes, or similar) so most everyone I talk to is displaced from their home, is scared and confused about what's next, and has heard a million horror stories about how insurance companies just do all they can to screw you over.

About 60% of my day is spent on the phone explaining the process and policy to people, answering whatever questions they have, answering them again when they forget or get confused, getting to know customers because I'll be talking to them for the next 6-18 months, and doing my best to make them feel at ease and getting them to trust that I have their best interests at heart. About 20% is coordinating various vendors, contractors, housing, etc, and about 20% is spent looking over photos, estimates, and reports. We also have to document everything we do and nearly every conversation so there's a great deal of time dedicated to that.

Pre covid I typically drove 2-6 hrs each day to inspect homes so a lot of this work was done behind the wheel and in person.
Wanted to say I appreciate your work, someone of your profession saved my parents about 10 grand when their basement flooded a couple years back.

I read. It started as me making myself stay off my phone more because I didn’t like how much I was on my phone. Then I was bored and didn’t want to watch tv all the time, so I borrowed a book from my bookworm daughter and now I read always. I feel smart. Lol

Re: What is cheaply made but sold at a ridiculous price?

French fries/chips/whatever you want to call them. McDonalds buys its potatoes at around 20 cents to the pound. You can get about four medium fries ($1.79) out of a pound of potatoes. Even if transport, labor, and other overhead triples the cost that's still a profit margin well over 1000%.

Margins on soda are even higher while burgers and other items have more ingredients and complexity and are thus more expensive to produce.
Well, that is $1.50 profit. (Per medium fries) Sure it is alot compared to 20 cents. But let's not forget that, even though that is a big profit. You would need to sell a shit ton of fries to even make it worth it.

Sure McDonalds has enough money to buy potatoes at $1 by the pound, but that would mean they had to sell 80% (correct my math if im wrong) more.

With that said, it is still cheap for us consumers to buy it from them, than it would be for us to make it at home.

Just throwing my 2 cents in.
Also, potatoes don't just turn into fries. Someone needs to process them somehow, whether that's cutting by hand or just tipping them into a fancy fry-cutting machine. Someone needs to fry them. Someone needs to bag them and give them to customers. This whole post is people forgetting that raw goods require people to turn them into products. And in a roundabout way this kind of thinking, that fries shouldn't cost $2 because a potato costs 20 cents, helps support paying the workers shit wages.

Re: What's the stupidest excuse you heard that turned out to be true?

We had a kid in our class who was pure chaos. Came late all the time, forgot stuff, didn't do his homework, disruptive in class... you get the picture. One day he came to school over two hours late and said the bus he was on fell into a sinkhole. Everybody was like "yeah, right", until the news came in that there had indeed been a sinkhole from a tunnel construction and that indeed a bus had slipped into it. We never found out whether our classmate had actually been in it, but he swore he was.
This reminds me - I have a friend with cerebral palsy that missed the bus one day and decided to walk to school alone rather than getting a ride from someone else. Since our small town doesn't have a secondary school, we were bussed over to a neighboring town, so the school is about 14 km away. It took him over four hours to get there, and apparently no one ever stopped to help him. If memory serves, he missed his first five classes and arrived just in time for lunch.

Despite everyone's reaction to his decision, he attempted to walk alone again multiple times, including once in around 10 cm of snow. Luckily, my mom started driving me to school later after the first incident, so when he did try again, we'd see and convince him to ride with us.

Healthy eating habits are very important for our health. We should build healthy eating habits. We should eat fresh vegetables and fruits everyday. They supply rich and the necessary vitamins for us. We also should eat less meat everday. And we had better drink a glass of milk in the morning or at night. Besides, we should focus on abalanced diet, which assures us the necessary nutritions. Junk food is a fatal killer for our health so that we should stay far from them.

Re: How do you make friends when you're 30+?

Join clubs of activities you enjoy. Talk to the people at your job. Write a message to your old classmates or friends. Meet your neighbours.
After many, many years of avoiding most of my neighbors I have spent the last year forcing myself to befriend and actually get to know the people around me (we moved here a year ago so new scenery new outlook I guess). One neighbor sucks butt, three neighbors are awesome, another neighbor is weird (like, weird for me), the new family is great but with something Mormon-y about them.

It's really nice. I like these people and I'm glad they're around my family.

Re: what is the coolest useless skill you have?
by

I can wiggle my ears... not totally useless, kids find it hilarious
Ah, but can you wiggle them independently of one another?
That's my useless skill.
Apparently it's borderline unbelievable to some people, too: Back when I was in third grade, I made the claim that I could wiggle my ears one at a time, and a substitute teacher accused me of lying. Needless to say, I demonstrated right then and there... but even though she was looking directly at me, literally watching my ears move, the woman insisted that I wasn't actually wiggling them.
"I don't know what you're doing," she said to me, "but you aren't moving your ears. My daughter can move her ears, and it's impossible to move one without moving the other."
The punchline came when that same teacher – intent on proving me wrong – asked me to demonstrate for the class. She had apparently thought that they'd side with her.
Suffice it to say that they didn't... and for the next week or so, people kept coming up to me with demands like "Wiggle your right ear! Okay, now the left one! Now both!"
