Hey all... firstly i wanted to state that it was NOT me that posted that ETH Morpheus pill or whatever thread that got locked in this forum! Apparently there was a breach here that exposed some user passwords? Anyway, I just logged on and saw that crap and therefore just changed my PW.
Now, on to a few mining questions... I got my 5700XT rig up and running a few days ago, but seems there may be fan issues on 2 of the 4 GPUs i have hooked up so far.
Here is what I am generally seeing (running this on SMOS):
GPU1- MSI 5700XT Gaming: ~49 degrees / 30-40% fan / ~110W
GPU2- MSI 5700XT Gaming: ~46 degrees / 72-80% fan / ~110W
GPU3- Gigabyte 5700XT Gaming OC: ~48 degrees / 70-100% fan / ~110W
GPU4- MSI 5700XT Evoke: ~51 degrees / 30-40% fan / ~110W
My SMOS settings for this rig:
Core MHz: 1300
Memory Mhz: 900
Aggressive Undervolt: On
PowerStage: 5
Target Temp: 68
Min Fan Speed: 30
For reference, this rig is in my garage, next to my 2 1070ti rigs that usually run around 60-66 degrees with about 40% avg fan speed.
Question #1: any idea why GPU's 2 & 3 would be spinning their fans much faster than 1 & 4? Especially strange to me since #1 & #2 are the exact same brand/model, and the temps are not even remotely close to my target temp of 68.
Question #2: are these high fan speeds risky in any way? All things being equal, is there a spin rate that I should be targeting not to exceed?
Question #3: is there a way within SMOS to control the MAX fan speed? The MIN fan speed shows up in the OC window but cant see anything to set the MAX.
If it is not good to have these high fan speeds, my school of thought is to reduce those even if it results in higher temps since current temps seem to be quite low around 50. Or, is there something about 5700 series that they need to run much cooler than 1070ti's or rx 470's?

I think i did pretty decently on my 5700 rig... total GPU cost of $2,150 for 4 XT's ($373 avg price) & 2 non-XT's ($330 each)... and all of these purchased in the last 10-12 days.
Absolutely agree with Phil that waiting for 3070's is not a good plan. First and foremost, we could (i hope not) be back to low block rewards by the time you get those up and running. The name of the game here is mining as much as possible when profits are at their highest, so sitting out a spike is simply not a good idea. Furthermore, since when have Nvidia GPUs been even close to Radeon for mining profitability/days to ROI? Maybe the gap was a bit smaller when ETH was way down and dual mining other algos on Nvidia could make decent returns, but certainly the hap is large now with ETHash being the most profitable GPU-mining algo by far!
It will be very interesting to see what happens when all of those 4GB cards cant mine ETH any more. I will run my new 5700 rig in addition to my four 6x 470 rigs and 2 1070ti rigs and that will get me around 1.3Ghz on ETHash. Assuming profitability holds a bit longer, I could see building 1 more 5700 rig in time for the Dec deadline, which would still get me 1Ghz even after taking those 4 470 rigs offline. Then, who knows. From what I've heard, implementation of ETH 2.0 will likely kill off the nice bump in block rewards we've seen recently. But, who knows when that will actually go live? A lot of variables are in play that nobody can predict, but if things stay good into the beginning of 2021, I would take a hard look at the mining capabilities of the forthcoming Big Nave GPU's. Cool! That's a nice little bonus since i bit the bullet and ordered another Gaming X last night from NewEgg... just to complete my rig, even though no rebate or sale... but now that's an extra $20 back that I didn't expect!
Might want to save your money for September 17th when the 3080 releases. $700 10 GB GDDR6X and 2x faster than the 2080. The 3070 is faster than 2080ti but uses 8 GB GDDR6 and comes out in October and its $499

Radeon 5000 series currently have a large lead on NVidia 2000 series when it comes to ETH mining effeciency/profitability. Assuming you will be able to get a hold of 6 3080's in the next 3 weeks at $700 each, they would have to do close to 100Mhz on ETH to be equivalent to the 5700XT's. I seriously doubt they will even approach that number.
Now granted, i totally get that Nvidia GPUs are better at mining other algos, but let's be honest... right now, all the money is in ETH mining. Maybe that ends next week (i sure hope not) but you can only go with what you have. Plus, losing 3 weeks of mining at these rates would be insanely crazy, especially since I already have it 90% bought.
Personally, I am much more eager to see what the Radeon Big Navi cards are going to be capable of. That's why I will likely be holding off on building my next rig until after they are released.

5600XT 39.5mhs@74w gpu-z, 135w total rig at the wall power Gold PSU, 40w total rig power idle, so roughly total 100w for the GPU. 2.53 watts/hash. VS Polaris closer to 4w/mhs. 50-60% improvement in efficiency easy. I call that a win. Now price per mhs thats another story...Honestly can't wait to see what the 80cu Navi RDNA2 will look like, i.e. "big navi".
radeon VII can do 100mhs, big navi should do more than that.
lol at nvidia 3080 at 10gb and 3090 at 24gb and no 16gb middle ground hehe, if 3090 can't do 100mhs or more maybe big navi will be my next upgrade.
IMO, i doubt big navi will top 100mhz on ETH, unless they are going to be using the higher bandwidth GDDR6x, which i have not been able to find confirmation of. (I know that NVidia Ampere are using 6x) If it's just more GDDR6, I don't see these achieving 100 or more... maybe more in the 80-85 range, but even that could be good, depending on price.

Was wondering if anyone here is currently or has been involved in STORJ nodes. I have over 100TB in HDD just sitting idle since they were mining BURST a few years ago, so looking to put them to work even for a moderate return. Just curious what some first hand experiences with this has been.

Thanks nsummy, there a ton of info in that thread and i read a good chunk of it yesterday, as well as looking through some guides on their website.
My initial impressions are this:
1- seems like there could be some pretty good returns, but...
2- unfortunately, getting a node set up appears to be quite complicated, especially compared to BURST, which was time-consuming to get all of the plots written but was pretty easy and straight forward to set up
3- I also have concerns about whether or not this could be run on a mining PC, and i will not set something like this up on my main PC. There's a bunch of stuff about port-forwarding and other setup stuff that I am worried will conflict with ETH mining.
4- it also seems like you might have set up RAID to get a node to use more than 1 HDD. This seems crazy to me but again, something i need to dig into
5- bottom line, i plan on trying to get my top questions answers before proceeding any further

Am i right in assuming this means the following:
- If i buy 3 5700XT Mech GPUs, I will only be able to claim 1 $20 rebate
but
- If i buy 1 5700XT Mech, 1 5700 (non XT) MEch, and 1 5700XT Gaming, I will be able to claim 3x $20 rebates?
Do i have that right?

Aha that makes sense. Yeah I'll be cutting any RX570's/Vegas as I increase my 5700XT stack. Up to.. 20 I think. They're amazing cards. I would have gone whole hog and bought 50-100, but I'm under contract for another rental building atm and can't be running a card up without getting an earful from my bank!
I'm in a similar boat, although with 470's not 570's lol. So far i just received 2 5700's and 1 5700XT and constantly hunting more if i can find decent deals. You specifically mention the XT's... do you see a noticeable difference between them and the non-XT 5700s? I have read many places there is not much difference mining wise but looking to confirm that. My current mindset is buying 5700's if i can find them under $350 and the XT's around $375. Obviously, the XT's will probably fetch a bit more for eventual re-selling, but other than that, are there any notable upsides for mining that would warrant that price premium?

I always have tried to keep it simple and never did a lot of dual mining.
Yeah i hear ya Phil... back when i first started mining in 2016, i was dual mining ETH + DCR and actually made a pretty good profit on the DCR portion. Although, I unfortunately didn't realize i could dual mine until about 6 months is, so probably lost several thousand in profit from that oversight, but i digress...
To me, it' all about the "extra work to potential incremental profit" ratio. So, if it's just a few more cents per day but you have to change miners and manage another pool, it's just not worth the effort. But, if the extra profit is significant, then maybe it's worth that extra work.
I did just find a site "MinerStat" that shows a lot more algos than whattomine, but looks like the best dual mine is ETH + ZIL, which only nets like 50 cents more per day (for 12 1070ti's), so clearly not worth it for that small amount.

Just wanted to give a big shout out to Phil & the others who recommended moving to SMOS for a couple of problem W10/470-4GB rigs! I finally got SMOS installed, up and running last night on the one where windows was corrupted and it ran perfectly for 18 hours before I had to shut it down to control heat in my house. I thought it would be great from the comments here and reviewing some of its capabilities, but I am even more pleased now that I got over the hump.
My main issue in delaying was SMOS not having Wi-fi, but that Wi-fi to LAN converter that Phil recommended a few pages back is working perfectly! So, I ordered 1 more of those today, which should get my other problem rig running on SMOS as soon as it cools down a bit here. I will likely convert my other 2 Radeon rigs over to SMOS as well, since not having to worry about drivers or other W10 issues is worth way more than their $2 fee to me! My 2 w10 1070ti rigs continue to work without any issues, so will just l leave those as is for now.

You can clearly see that almost everybody is powering up their rigs again. Pretty much as long as your power is $0.30/kwh or less, you are making a profit and this is based on the old RX series, some of the newer GPUs are even more efficient.

You can clearly see that almost everybody is powering up their rigs again. Pretty much as long as your power is $0.30/kwh or less, you are making a profit and this is based on the old RX series, some of the newer GPUs are even more efficient.

More delays of ETH 2.0 would be great, but as I understand it, even when implemented, it will now be a hybrid method that still allows mining during a transition period. Many have speculated this could add 1-2 more years of mining for ETH. What i have not seen directly addressed is the whether or not the block reward for mining will still be a minimum of 2. If that is reduced to say 1 or 1.5, it may make it difficult to profitably mine ETH since the premium fee portion (addition) to current block rewards is expected to be significantly reduced with 2.0.

Hey Citronik... what are you waiting for lol? 470's are netting 80-90 cents a day profit (with 11 cent electricity) and that's after the block rewards have dropped back down closer to 3 now.

Hey! This thing might actually enable me to get my pesky rig onto SMOS! I got that PowerLine adapter but after reading the docs, i realized that it only works on the same electrical circuit. Since none my my rigs are, it won'e help me as I had hoped so it's going back to Amazon. However, I think this wi-fi to ETHernet will be exactly what i need, so thanks for posting the link!
And yeah, even now ETH still holding pretty solidly around $440, which i will gladly take. Although it does unfortunately look like reward per block is dropping back down now but even so, this environment is by far the best we miners have had since the glory days of 2017!
Question 1: do i need to unplug all GPUs while installing drivers, then only plug them back in after driver install is complete?
Its best to start with 1, and then plug them in 1 by one if you're unsure of the cards being good. If they're all new its fine to just plug them all in.Quote

Yes, you still need to. Also dont use the ver 20 drivers, stick to 19 or older.Btw since you are using windows, you wont be able to mine eth with 4 gb cards, you would need to switch to something like simpleminingOS.
Thanks for the inputs, I really appreciate it! I tried again 2 days ago but with v20.2 and it screwed things up again after running pixel patcher. Seeing your comments about staying with v19 drivers, i will definitely stick with that on future attempts. At this point, it's gonna be too hot here to try to run that rig anyway but i actually end up trying SMOS on this rig since it didnt seem this attempt at a windows reset took. I will just have to swap rooms with another rig that is close to a Cat5 outlet and that's not going to be an easy task lol.

Yeah, this is the one i got from NewEgg a couple of days ago. It's still in the box since it's too hot here for me to turn on another rig. I was actually thinking about getting 1-2 more but seeing your comment, i will likely hold off until I can get this one up and running and see how bad it is. I guess if it is bad, it makes sense why really only this and an iffy ASRock 5700 are currently available through retailers. I'm really starting to track 5600 XT & 5700 XT closely now. Will be interesting to see what happens.
