Never thought the endorsement to crumbs' (and xstr8guy's) comment on the HashFail-thread would be applicable to KnC at that time!

...

3.  As xstr8guy suggested above (not sure if he was joking, but wait...), even flipping the whole magella around, so that the back of the case

faces the front (becomes the inlet side) would be a more elegant solution.  At least the case would only get the exhaust from the Rube

Goldbergian twin PSs
, not the full furnace blast of the 3 ASICs.
...

Nice analogy !

This is BAD news!

It seems EVERY (pre-order) mining company starts with promising 'all the world' to their early 'investomers', and as soon as production starts, they somehow forget those promises, and change their priorities to: 'maximising shareholder-value' (and no, 'we' are NOT those shareholders!)

And of all mining-companies, KnC seemed the most honorable, up until this last news statement.
Like some have mentioned here before, it appears KnC couldn't ship Jupiters (OR modules for that matter) not because they couldn't get some components, but just to fill their datacenter first.

which brings me to: Kncminer.cn
this company is is the exclusive reseller/distributor for KnCminers in China. (only mentioned a few times in this 1500-page-thread)

Owner(chairman) of KnCminer.cn is Brock Pierce http://www.linkedin.com/in/brockpierce (a well known bitcoin-entrepeneur)

I wouldn't be surprised if he (BP) didn't resell any of those machines, and just started his own mining-farm in China!

Fck it, i'm out!

update:
"Kobayashi* did not refer to an offer made last month by a group of investors, including former child actor-turned entrepreneur Brock Pierce, to take over Mt. Gox. But he said such offers would be taken into consideration."

Tricky sentence, but I guess "The code is open source" refers to Andreas code, and not KnCwallet.
(no reference found on github for kncwallet)

There's nothing tricky about it. If they use any of Andreas' GPL sources, then their code is also GPL. KnCWallet by definition is open source and the sources must be released. Furthermore, the EULA they require is illegal for a GPL project.

KnCWallet has been opensourced today: https://github.com/kncgroup/bitcoin-wallet/tree/master/wallet

Guess ur post on Andreas' thread, speeded up that moment and forced KnC to change their terms of service  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=484105

Thanks for that!

link to KNC wallet. http://beta.kncwallet.com/

I think they are trying to compete with their friend Josh at BFL and their wallet idea.

I don't see a link to the sources. It is based on GPL sources, and thus must be made available.

It's based on Andreas Schildbach's android wallet:

from the faq: http://www.kncwallet.com/faq.htm
Quote
What is the KnC Wallet?
The KnC Wallet is based on the open souce Android Wallet from Andreas Schildbach and brings a new user experience and integration with the KnC Directory to make finding your Bitcoin contacts simple and easy.

Quote
Is it secure?
The core elements of the KnC Wallet are based on the Android Wallet that has been downloaded over 100K times. The code is open source and we believe that the application is secure.

Tricky sentence, but I guess "The code is open source" refers to Andreas code, and not KnCwallet.

Thanks for this.  Free 0.0086 BTC obtained Smiley

Not even enough for a game of satoshidice, now that is a big F you from KnC....... how dare they give away dust.....
I think it's a great marketing idea and a $25,000 investment to get more users involved in BTC.
All good.

I was speaking in jest and trying to mimic the moans and groans that have filled this thread this year.......

lol..sorry (I just never know on this thread)
At the same time though, i only found out about the app by reading this thread a few weeks back, so joined the mailing list as a beta tester.
I got a newsletter update today about the official appstore release. I have not read anything about this app else where and i highly doubt it has been advertised to a market who do not already own bitcoin.
I think they are relying on it becoming a bit "viral"

It is quite interesting considering that you usually have to pay $5 for an app that they are effectively paying people $5 to use the app.
It's clever marketing (and in reality, the cost to KNC is neglible).
I like it.

They pay $5 for ur privacy:

Code:
This app has access to these permissions:

Network communication
full network access
control Near Field Communication
view network connections

Phone calls
read phone status and identity

Storage
modify or delete the contents of your USB storage

Bluetooth
pair with Bluetooth devices

Camera
take pictures and videos

Your social information
read your contacts
read call log

System tools
test access to protected storage
send sticky broadcast

Affects battery
control vibration
prevent device from sleeping

Your applications information
run at startup

rest of terms:  http://www.kncwallet.com/terms.htm

tl;dr; pretty good deal (from KnC Group AB's perspective)

Re: Hacking The KNC Firmware: Overclocking
by
Ghrindy
on 28/01/2014, 22:45:07 UTC

If the gh-speed doesnt start initially from high value, then miner settles down to lower value. This is strange but perhaps there is some "initial modification" done on cgminer that sets the rate for rest of the session.

Sometimes i have to restart like 10 times to get this "high catch" effect. Its pain to wait in between, because without delay you just get fault 96/97 on vrms. Which means restarting the miner from the page (I dont like to switch off power but had to do that some times)I always wait like at least 45 seconds if vrms have been running for a while to let them cool down.

I've noticed that too, but my unit almost does it every time...if you mess with the spi freq. that can do it i think...cause i just increased mine and it didn't do it anymore...went back to stock and it did it again...

well on 251 with oct. jup...thxs to the graph i was able to finally get the hw error down to .4% and 718-723gh/s on cgminer, bertmod says 700w same as 241, but that was before better cooling fans added...have one board at 240a :O hope it doesn't fry..and also 1 board at 200a but its at 42c Smiley Hopefully pool will report higher hash now that i got the hw % down Smiley i'll know morrow morning

ok 251 is very high for october ? Could you please tell me you spi settings with frequency ? ( screenshot please ?)

yes 251 very high...have 10 fans cooling it and still have have amps...my spi volts are 3.3 and the freq is 201442

after running it all nite...pool reported as high 723gh and cgminer avg settled at 714...thinking about trying the next step up or 261 but idk...amps are pretty high on one board

You are my hero Cheesy

1) have you changed the settings of the individual die (more volts ?) ?

2) or just general spi ? (in addition to frequency)?

3) How many amps and watts marks every single day? With a cooler master V850 can set the miner to 251 according to you?

Now I have 666 average with 231 setting  (3.3 spi and 256 k freq) with october jupiter and 4 45 degrees fans and 1 megaflow

yes i've been tuning individual dies since going on 251...been a struggle but Nil's graph has helped me tremendously...just now got it down to .38% and i hope it says that low..might be lower if i could disable the core that get 160hw errors an hr but oh well

told you my spi settings...tryed your 256k freq and i don't think it helped, but i might start trying diff. volt n freq next as i think i got the die volts locked in almost

3rd...i don't understand this question...but i'm on a 1000w seasonic plat. psu, but you might be able to swing it if you keep the vrms cool enough

Have you tried lowering the spi freq and volt settings with the same OC settings ?

I found that lowering those values, AFTER adjusting the individual die-voltage settings for optimal performance,
resulted in slightly better GH/s performance, better WU, lower HW% and much lower watts!

before spi freq/v change:
OC: 231
spi freq: 201 kHz  (default)
spi volt: 1.95 V (default)
Avg. Hash Rate:663 Gh/s  WU:9216  HW:2.3% R:1.4%
Watts: +- 755W

after spi freq/v change:
OC: 231
SPI freq: 170666 Hz
SPI volt: 1.80 V
Avg. Hash Rate:677 Gh/s  WU:9459  HW:1.6% R:0.8%
Watts: +- 715W

BTW,having the same Gh/s results with 241, 251,..(and counting) with the only difference: more watts per Gh/s

I hope they don't go for to much perfection with the Neptunes...  This still is an arms race and difficulty

rising exponentially is still a big part of mining.  no..?

bottleneck with controller boards Huh that's the simplest component of the whole miner.  Could you

please explain Orama..?  I'm not sure I'm believing this unless you/KNC can explain with more detail.  KNC have

pulled miracles in the past with bigger volumes and now there's a bottleneck.  I'm sure another PCB

manufacturers that can make it happen if existing manufacturer is busy.

Also. didn't KNC tell us to keep BTC handy for these Jupiters.  What's changed..?  Fear of Neptune refunds..?

by the way they sold out this shouldn't be the case.

Come on, we're all men here.. spill the beans even if some will get upset I'm sure we'll get over it.

I'm guessing the BBB (BeagleBoneBlack) could be a bottleneck.

Cointerra is using them too, and probably many others, because of the 'powerfulness' of a BBB compared to a raspberryPi.

BeagleBone is a US (non-profit)company/foundation, and rPi is from the UK:
Hopefully Cointerra (US company) didn't sign an exclusive deal with BBB, for a certain amount of time/products.

What do you think the safest die voltage level is while keeping the SPI voltage on automatic? I have an October 4VRM rig with 4 modules. I know my way around a linux system and can program pretty easily but when it comes to electrical stuff I'm kind of in left field. I just don't want to blow up my Dad's rig.

http://www.photopiks.com/lowvoltage.jpg

Best settings so far for my oct jupiter (4 VRM):
...

Advanced tuning:
* SPI volt: default (1.95)
* SPI freq: default (201442)
...

After OC (231) / FW 0.99.2:
Avg.HR: 660 Gh/s, poolside: 650 Gh/s
WU: 9246
HW err%: 2,6%
Watts: +- 700 W (via advanced-page in 0.99.2)
ASIC1: 56.0 ℃ , avg 55 Amps
ASIC2: 43.0 ℃ , avg 54 Amps
ASIC3: 62.5 ℃ , avg 56 Amps (highest die: 62 Amps)
ASIC4: 52.5 ℃ , avg 55 Amps

...

Pool rejects%: 0.9%
Watts: 680-690 W (bertmod)

ASIC2: 42.0 ℃ , avg 52 Amps
ASIC3: 61.5 ℃ , avg 56 Amps (highest die: 61 Amps)

ASIC2: 43.0 ℃ , avg 54 Amps
ASIC3: 62.5 ℃ , avg 56 Amps (highest die: 62 Amps)
ASIC4: 52.5 ℃ , avg 55 Amps

tips for OC:
keep an eye on Amps per die (in Advanced-page) and aim for 50-55 Amps range per die.
Then change die-voltage accordingly (2-5 steps on max 2 die's at a time) -> save and restart cgminer
-> wait 2 min. for first impressions -> wait at least 10-15 min to see if performance stabilises!
(if you OC too much, the first couple min u'll have great results, but after 10 min performance decreases fast)

hi i have a October jupiter knc with 0.99.1Tune firmware with 4 vrms, I would like to give OC, but i don't know how to start, could someone help me?

I'm Spanish, I forgive my English.

Have you read through the thread? It tells you exactly what you need to do..

Where exactly???

Here start with this:

DISCLAIMER: Not my fault if you blow it up! Smiley

give me some address to send for some beers thank you

Besides learning a lot of the KnC machine, linux, voltage-settings(..etc) and OC´ing in general, when you would have read this whole thread, u would've probably noticed fpgaminer, bondus and tolip_wen had a breakthrough post w.r.t OC'ing:  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=313978.msg3819202#msg3819202 (msg #19)
and tolip_wen 'flooded' the thread with more usefull posts.

Therefore, imho, i would nominate tolip_wen, OP (fpgaminer) and bondus as most entitled for a donation.

tolip_wen: 13362fxFAdrhagmCvSmFy4WoHrNRPG2V57
OP: 1NT4RyJMqtRuDRr6zHdXdKSpmX3SR5he6z
bondus: (where's ur donation address?)

(with all respect to all other contributors in this thread and joeventura for his quick response to your specific question, btw)

ASIC3: 61.5 ℃ , avg 56 Amps (highest die: 61 Amps)
ASIC4: 51.5 ℃ , avg 54 Amps

Other findings:

I've played a lot with the Advanced tuning part with different SPI volt, freq and individual die-voltage settings.
The 'trick' is to get the Amps between 50-55 for ultimate power/Gh ratio (correct me if i'm wrong).
After days of experimenting it came down to what hno (from irc) once said: it's like chasing ghosts!

At the end the default-settings for Advanced tuning works best (for now), BUT after playing with those
settings, and at the end setting all the Advanced tuner settings back to original values(manually) resulted in the worst performance of 250 Gh/s and the only remedy was to reflash the FW.
I'll play again with the settings after next diff change.

Btw, a lot of thanks to all contributers in this thread and to iterate Cablez's remark:
"Wonderful thread gentlemen, really shows the pioneering spirit of the mining core. Thank you."

and last but certainly not least: OP (1NT4RyJMqtRuDRr6zHdXdKSpmX3SR5he6z) and tolip_wen (13362fxFAdrhagmCvSmFy4WoHrNRPG2V57) !
