Re: Profitability Thoughts for Mining?

Gpu's are for sure cheaper than they have been.  Profits from mining are for sure less than then have been also......Nobody knows what will happen going forward.  There are just lots and lots of factors to consider.  If you have the money for equipment, electricity, and can hold out not making much mining coins for a while or ever maybe then go for it?

I am still gpu mining as a hobby and I just hold the coins.   The rigs are paid for when profits were better.  I can afford the cost of electricity.  But yeah investing a bunch of money in gpu's expecting a fast return or even running stuff you already have for much of any return with cost of power is trouble.

I have a 20 gpu 1070/1070ti setup going in my garage/workshop.  I just built a box with a 2x4 frame and Hardiebacker ceramic sheet for walls just in case of a meltdown.  I doubt the thing will light up but you never know.  Its a little piece of mind.   I put two AC Infinity Cloudline T6 fans pushing the air out the top and out of the house.  The main reason for the mining enclosure was the shop would just get too hot even in the winter.  And I do pull cold air from the outside and I am in a fairly humid area on the west coast of the United States.  With how much heat those gpu's put out I am not super worried about the wet air.  From the posts above it does not seem like it should be an issue.

I have not used Nicehash in a long time but I know you could add the cpu along with your gpu's when I was using it.  I remember comparing hash rates with cpu on and off and I do not think the difference was much though.  But if getting the max out is your goal turn it on.

I don't have time or patience to read through all this but I call bs.  Op said "Using an electric motor is no different then the wind driving it."  Well with wind its driving the motor.  What drives it with your system?   Electricity!!  Power just does not come from nowhere.

The way the baby boomers have and still are running this country is a disaster.  We need to get them out and start getting things in order.  It will not be easy.  Until that happens expect more of the same.

When gpu's go through the roof again we will know a run is happening.

By the time GPU prices go through the roof the bull market will already be in full force. You need better indicators  Grin.

They seem to go hand in hand to me.   I know if you wait for the Bull market it is too late.  You will not get reasonably priced gpu's till the market cools.

Right now I would suggest 1070 or 1070ti's.  They can be found used from $250-$300 and are great versatile cards.  Good with power consumption.

Yeah I am holding all my altcoins and getting more.   Just look at ETH over the last little recent while.  It bottomed out around $80 and jumped back to around $160.  Altcoins are not dead.  Just wait.  There will be winners and losers for sure.

I have a 20 gpu's being mostly 1070ti's and some 1070's in a longer single car garage.  I also use it as a work space and man it gets hot in there.  Even in the winter.  I am planning on making some kind of a mining rig box but I am in the early planning stages.  I was thinking a 2x4 frame with drywall walls?

I am pretty pleased with the price of ETH.  I am buying it when I can.  Stacking up eth when it was over $1000 was harder.......I am giving my kids a Nano Ledger with an eth each on it for Christmas even.  Maybe in college they can cash it out and buy a sandwich when the are out of food.  Come on everyone lets push cryptocurrency for Christmas.  That will end the bear market on this stuff.

Re: Auto Power up mining rig after power loss ?

Yeah you will want to do that in the bios.  On my Asus B250 its pretty easy to find but you might have to search around some depending on what motherboard you have.  But you are on the right track.  It is nice because you do not need a power switch.  I have my gpu's powered by server power supplies and the motherboard on a regular atx and to power off I just turn off the atx power supply.  When you turn it back on the rig should instantly boot back up just like with a power outage.

I suggest going with 1070ti's for a bit more than 1070's.  The 1070ti's hash a bit better and are good with electricity.  But 1070's if found for cheap would be solid also.  I just picked up 5 great condition EVGA 1070ti's for $290 each shipped.

My rigs are still running.  But if its costing more to mine in electricity than you are getting in coins I understand shutting them off for a while.

Yeah I am no expert on this stuff.  So its either a whole house surge protector or just the PSU?  Then whats the use of a whole house surge protector?  So I wasted $50 on useless surge protection crap.

These have a good reputation and are reasonably priced.
They have a good reputation only when naive consumers are educated by hearsay, wild speculation, subjective reasoning, and advertising.  When it comes to protection, that Tripplite is known to even make surge damage easier. To compromise what is already better and robust protection inside appliances.  That means learning from science and over 100 years of experience.

Where is this 'good reputation'?  Only from emotions.

Where is this good price?   It costs $25 to protect only one appliance? And does not even claim to protect from potentially destructive surges.  Effective protection from direct lightning strikes costs about $1 per protected appliance.  That Tripplite is tens of time more expensive.

Where does that citation list how many joules it will absorb?  Number not posted because it is near zero (ie thousand joules).  Effective protection always answers this question.  Where are hundreds of thousands of joules harmlessly absorbed?  What happened to that good reputation?

Recently we removed many plug-in protectors.  All (including one that was that Tripplite) had catastrophic damage.  A potential fire fortunately did not get out of the box.  Meanwhile other companies known by any guy for integrity do not have all those threats and problem.  And are actually rated to protect from surges including and not limited to lightning.

Strongly recommended.  Properly earth a 'whole house' protector from other companies known for integrity.  Since that is necessary even to protect an expensive and near zero joule Tripplite.

Ummm.... Are you ok man?  Yeah how many of us have "whole house" protectors in the works?......  If I thought the guy was looking for a whole house surge protector of the highest quality and installed by the most professional professionals I would not suggest a goddam $25 surge protector.  But I use them and I know other smaller time miners do also.  No massive fires or blown up gpu's yet.  But you will be the first to know when it happens.
