Bitcoin/Altcoin Portfolio strategies
by
Imaginary Entity
on 30/05/2017, 19:24:46 UTC
When pursuing a buy-and-hold strategy investing in crytocurrencies, what are the best practices for diversifying among them?

Ie.
Own by market cap' weight?
Own 10% of top ten (by market cap')?
Own varying percentages of your top 5 favourite projects?
90% Bitcoin, 10% new ICOs?

The idea is to mitigate some risk (Bitcoin is least volatile), whilst having exposure to alt-coins as 'emerging currencies' with high potential.

Any theories?

I'm leaning to one of weighted by market cap', but I'd like to hear other suggestions.

Re: How much of your wealth is in Cryto/Bitcoin?

Out of interest I'd like to do an informal poll to see how much of people's wealth they are willing to put into Cryptocurrencies or Bitcoin... percentage-wise of total investments/networth

I have nothing in Bitcoin at the minute, and that is the way it will stay for awhile.  We are at a stale mate and i agree with vinny lingham that the price is gonna tank, the market will punish us for no consensus.

Vinny does have the knack of calling these things ...

Yes sorry, I guess it's only polite that I state my own situation while asking others to divulge their own situations/opinions.

For the past year I've been putting about 20% of my income into Bitcoin - whilst purchasing Alts on occasion. However because of the huge growth this has become over 50% of my investments in value terms!

I like blockchain the invention and think Bitcoin the network has a true value case but the risk profile is impossible to calculate - I just wanted to see where others are at and how they view the risk by how much of their wealth they're willing to put into it.

Bitcoin Compared to Other Assets (New Website)
by
Imaginary Entity
on 09/03/2017, 19:48:03 UTC
Hi Bitcointalk

I've made a very basic website/widget, hoping to get some critique/feedback.

www.blueswan.io

At the moment is a single page, it compares the Market Capitalization of Bitcoin to other competitors or just comparisons of curiosity -

- Western Union (Market Cap)
- PayPal (Market Cap)
- VISA (Market Cap)
- US M1 money supply (ie. cash dollars out in the wild)
- Total Gold above ground

Basically I just made it for fun to compare where Bitcoin is compared to other more established value transfer mediums etc.

I'd love to hear any feedback and/or criticism (productive please Smiley )

It depends if you want to avoid the mainstream media just get your sources on the USA from other countries where objective reporting still exists.

Nhk Newsline from Japan, the BBC at times in the UK they are far more bias to Brexit , CTV or CBC from Canada, RT is pretty honest despite all the US fear mongering about it being the Kremlins shouting point from Russia, Al Jazeera from the Qatar,Dubai or CCTV from China to name a few.

The point is as long as it's not from the USA it probably is ok to watch news related to that country through it and not feel like being hit by endless propaganda waves.
Just be careful not to do the safe-space logic where everyone lives in filter bubbles that is a scarier thought than 1984 and the thought police, it would be the self-created thought police.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filter_bubble

Thanks for the link to that Wiki page - it gives me a name for what I am trying to describe, my 'filter bubble'. I'd like more control over my own filter bubble.
I'm cool with being in an isolated culture if the alternative is being overloaded with junk.

I'm in the UK, I do pick through a few of the news sources you mention but I can tell you that the BBC are always pushing their narrative.
My favourite news source is probably the Financial Times, because they attach less emotion and/or fear mongering to the stories.

Don't have much experience with US news outlets....

Re: Do America and England follow bitcoin?

If any other country does not follow bitcoin which I know its impossible, those two countries are definitely keen on finding out what will happen or happening in the crypto world with bitcoin taking the lead role and that is why some exchange sites and gambling sites specifically banned users from these two countries from patronising their services.

Which services are banned for UK citizens?

There are loads of services not available to US citizens, not just crypto services. It's because their rules make it a real ball ache with paper work etc. That's its not worth the agro. And online gambling is illegal for US citizens

I can attest (though not for so long a time as that) this does work. Technology use nowadays (which is mostly entertainment or convenience) is mostly habitual. Unconditioning those habits, or replacing them, is healthy. And a note on privacy from state actors. Even if you could hear all the voices in the room, it would be hard to separate a single voice and hear it clearly through the cacophony. That's the current state of affairs with government surveillance. You are psuedo anon, like bitcoin, because it's hard to single out one person with all the noise. When you listen to all the Facebook posts, from the LOL cats to the fight clips, eventually, you tune out everything that isn't "I am a crazy head and intend to do harm to myself, or others".

So, just be aware you are always on record, if you use an electronic medium of communication. It doesn't diminish you, which is the most important thing. But it does give you some considerations.

But when they tune in, you are quite fucked.

Quite separate from PRIVACY (which is another important issue). The concern is if the over-stimulation of a certain type of message is effecting me without my knowing (a bit like subliminal messaging etc.)

you'd spend your whole time answering incredibly dumb questions from people who don't understand anything, then you'd get stabbed and robbed by someone who does. it could be a fun experiment until then.

there was a physical store in london that sold bitcoin for a while. it seemed to be a short lived thing.

Is that the Azteco shop? Is it closed now then?

I had a friend who opened and ran a shop selling "Top Trumps" type card when we'd just left school, I think they might have been Pokemon cards or something like that. He made quite a bit of money (for a 16 year old) for a while.

I would view a 'Bitcoin market stall' as something akin to this - Something of a novelty, collectable, a gift. Obviously not for real investors but for the person who has seen Bitcoin in the news and feels like they can spare a Tenner or so 'just for fun'.

I thought the best way to implement is to create varying size of fancy looking paper wallets of small denominations (with fairly high mark-up so price fluctuations don't affect the value of the paper wallet too much).

Of course aftercare for the customer would be a major part of it if they are asking further questions but then of course then maybe they will become return customers?

People like physical, people like tangible and people are more likely to buy something that is right in front of their face on a Saturday morning rather than a bank-transfer and 3 days wait away.

I just wondered if anyone here had set up at a market and tried to sell Bitcoin to the public/tourists?

I think it's be a bit of advertising for Bitcoin for people that walk past and people may buy as novelty gift etc. (if done as fancy paper wallet).

I'm considering trying this in London, what do you guys think?

My tip for you.

Make three weeks of holidays with cycling, hiking, running but without a phone, tablet, notebooek, internet, tv ...

You'll see, it will work. And after that you have a different behavior
Unfortunately, modern people are already so used to modern technology that I very much doubt that they will survive long without them. Last time I forgot my cell phone at home, I passed only 3 hours then I had to go back and get him on the other side of town.

But it works. At least for me...  Cool
And I'm very modern I think.
I have to do this twice a year, in summer and in the winter.

Do you get a 'reset feeling' after doing that?    I'd be interested to hear your experience.

That is such a great idea and I've contemplated doing weekend or week away in the wilderness - 3 weeks is really quite a long time, maybe that's what's required for a 'reset'?.

Have you done this?

Going ahead and doing all this just so you won't be exposed to fake news narratives and so on is really just a waste of time. You have to know as a person what to weed out and what you know is true with real evidence backing it, this is why I am always one to ask for sources and such when people post in this sub section of the forum.

I go through a good amount of news sources which include CNN, Fox, NY Post, Reddit (Couple sub reddits that are both Liberal and Conservative in nature, one even outright supports Donald Trump) You have to be able to know what is real and what is fake, it's tough but it really teaches you what point of view and bias can do to a certain topic / article.

Use one of those Firefox plugging that you can block specific sites. Only problem is that if you really want to go on a specific site, you could open another browser. But if Firefox is your primary browser, it can at least initially stop you and make you decided if you really want to go through the process of opening up another browser to go to a site that you wish not to go, but can't help.

Don't do this, just watch all the sources and decide yourself what is exaggerated, outright fake, true and so on. Everyone has a bias so just going on a certain couple of sites will just confirm your own views and you never want that. You want to see what other people feel and see about a topic.

I understand what you're saying and I agree (when it comes down to political things it's all noise anyway). But a lot of sensationalist news broadcast is statistically irrelevant to a lot of other stuff that isn't reported upon or reported upon very little.
Some kind of censorship/filter could help balance out this statistical error.
The same effect present in the issue of 'which kills more people, coconuts or sharks?' And which would you take more precautions to avoid?

I'm not Spoc and I'm not 100% rational Grin I'm much more scared of sharks than coconuts! But does my "irrational" fear of sharks limit my opportunities?

Re: Bitcoin can only be a gold 2.0, nothing more

Wire transfers will soon become obsolete

If you need instant payments you may want to use card-to-card transfers which are as instant as it gets. You may have to pay a fee but with wire transfers you have to pay almost the same fee anyway, so it doesn't make any significant difference. On the other hand, Bitcoin transaction fees are growing in dollar terms quite in line with Bitcoin price itself, therefore the fees may be quite comparable in size to fiat transfers unless you are transferring dizens of bitcoins, of course. But in the latter case the fiat fees will be likely limited as well

I question whether instant payments are mission critical issues and whether they deserve high priority status.

If it is true that people deliberately spam bitcoin transactions with low transfer fees to sabotage legitimate bitcoin transactions.

It could naturally follow that these forums are spammed by people who exaggerate the importance of instant payments to give us the false notion that instant payments are a critical issue in need of attention.

To some degree bitcoin's transaction speed could be a factor of its security features the same way encrypted wifi connections are generally slower the more secure they are.

If that is true, there could be some social engineering at work in terms of people investing a good deal of time and effort into exaggerating the need for instant bitcoin transactions, possibly to push for bitcoin's security features being relaxed in order to suit some agenda.

It makes zero difference to me if bitcoin transactions are instant or take time to confirm.

I wouldn't be surprised if the vast majority of bitcoin users were indifferent to the time it takes for btc to confirm transactions.

Thanks for your comment.
I'd just like to say that I'm not sponsored and don't believe I've been swayed into one side of the BigBlock/SmallBlock debate.

My reasons for wanting 'as frictionless/cheap as possible' transactions is totally selfish and personal. I envisaged Bitcoin to be a way in which we/I could vote with our money. Being able to  quickly and with minimal effort change our 'vote', therefore having maximum control over the vote that we have.
To me, investing is like giving something my seal-of-approval. I invest in a project/asset because I believe in its values or its importance but the only way to invest currently is on a big-scale, paying through a 3rd party service.

I'd like to see micro-investing in diverse/decentralized things a possibility (<$10) - without the fees cutting into it to much.

Maybe Bitcoin adds more value to the world as a 'store of value and marker of property' for troubled people and regions and not as a cheap, micro-payment system system for the more wealthy?

First of all you need to remove yourself from Facebook, Facebook has set itself up as a very powerful propaganda  & social engineering tool, I recommend everyone stays away from it. Most of the political fear mongering and propaganda is showered upon the masses via social media.
Stay away from Google, together Facebook and Google know more about you than your wife does, Google will feed you information that confirms with your bias, making it incredibly difficult for you to receive unbiased data.
Thrid, experience the world for yourself, it sounds silly but people have been plugged into these propaganda channels for a decade and it has completely destroyed their intelligence, personality and humanity, they can no longer think logically for themselves.
Do these things before you are completely and totally enslaved by the technocrats, you haven't seen nothing yet.
If you think the Rothschilds are bad wait until Zuckerberg, Musk & Brin have total control over you.

Absolutely agree with that. I haven't been a member of Facebook for about 6 years, I don't miss it at all. I'm pretty reliant on Google though - I have started using Bing a bit more - to mix it up but ultimately Google still has a superior search.

Large-Scale agenda promoting is in the hands of a handful of people and yes it must have an effect on the masses - (Maybe it's good so far? I don't know) But on a personal level, some of it is certainly unhelpful.

I guess the only true solution is to have a personal Google-esque algorithm that scans the web for me - quality control

I want to censor my internet
by

on 18/02/2017, 21:15:51 UTC
We are bombarded and over-exposed to certain sensationalist themes and media narratives.

It's almost impossible for anyone to come up with their own ideas/views/opinions with the kind of narrative feeding we get on a daily basis. I know 'giving up the internet' and/or not visiting certain websites could alleviate this issue some what but it led me to thinking.....

Is there a way to self-censor the data you receive?

eg. If someone finds it counter-productive/unhelpful to hear about 'terrorism' on a daily basis, is it possible to block anything associated with this from your internet viewing without having to restrict the websites you visit?

A lot of people are becoming aware of their over-exposure to other's sensationalist ideas and may be looking for a solution/more control of their data absorption habits....

Does anyone else want a filter/ more control over your internet viewing?

Any ideas on how this can be done?

Hi Guys, I'm trying to call CoinBase's API for up-to-date Bitcoin price for a website I'm trying to create. I'm trying to make it using javaScript. Below is the code I have come up with but I am a bit stuck with it.....  I was hoping someone here might point me in the right direction?
