The version I have is 3.3.8. I followed the link in the app when I opened it and it said update available. My wallet has all my previous transactions listed so I don't understand how it would be a fake
Which link? And which version you had before updating it through that link?

If you didn't download from ELECTRUM.ORG, then you downloaded a fake Electrum. Can you check your browser history (along with the download history) to see which link you used? And how did the update message look like?

That's the bad thing you did if you update the wallet from the link popup on Electrum older than 3.3.4.

Like the above said if you get the update on the right URL which is electrum org you don't need to be worry but there are still some fake websites look the same as electrum.org URL with little difference.

You have to confirm if what is the old version you use before you update it to the latest version?

I've deleted my browsing history since then and I'm not sure what version I had previous as I don't use it much. Looking at the info in the dmg file that I downloaded though it shows that it was downloaded from "https://download.electrum.org/3.3.8/electrum-3.3.8.dmg, https://electrum.org/"

The only thing I can think of is that my e-mail was hacked and the wallet address changed to someone else. Damn  Undecided
That's impossible if you receive the email from your friend you can not edit the email that you receive from him unless he knows your email password.

Can you tell us what the latest version of the Electrum you currently using? And where did you downloaded it?

There are many fake Electrum wallets so you might be using a fake wallet.
You must verify the Electrum first before you install Electrum to your PC.

So I suggest you to verify the Electrum that you currently using follow the guides below

- How to verify Electrum (for Windows, Linux and Mac)
- How verify Electrum signature

I've been using Electrum for some time as well and never had any issues. Haven't downloaded anything suspicious. I copied and pasted the wallet address so no chance that I messed it up. It's completely different anyway. I tried setting up another payment to see if it was clipboard malware but it showed correctly in the preview as I had pasted it.

Hi,
I typed in a friends wallet id in Electrum to send some bitcoin and confirmed it was correct. However when I checked the next morning to verify that it had sent, it's showing that it went to completely different wallet that I've never seen. I've never had this happen. What could have gone wrong?
Using a Mac with VPN and running the latest version of Electrum from an external HD.
