Re: Decided on Trezor Safe 5. It needs to be connected to computer to create seed?

Honestly, it kind of makes me want to look elsewhere for another device.  Why would you feel comfortable with your device connected during the most important part of setup(releasing seed phrase)?
I can see where you're coming from.
Even with open-source code, the difficulty of auditing all those lines; the client Trezor Suite and the firmware, isn't going to be simple.
Without time, expertise and/or effort, you'll just be trusting the verdict of other users/developers on the code.

If still in doubt, you may consider a full "air-gap" hardware device which can be used for transaction signing (PSBT) and initial setup without connecting to a computer.
E.g. Coldcard.

Thanks, everyone.

I currently use the Ledger Nano X and am very familiar with its features. One aspect I really appreciated was the ability to generate the seed phrase offline, before connecting the device to any internet-connected platform. That feature gave me a real sense of security.

However, with Ledger Recover becoming a concern and the closed source coding, I decided to purchase the Trezor Safe 5 as a more privacy-focused alternative.

To be clear, I’m not opposed to connecting a hardware wallet to the internet when performing transactions. But I’m genuinely puzzled by Trezor’s decision to require a connection to a computer just to generate the seed phrase. Why not allow for a basic power source — like a wall charger — for initial setup, so users can create the seed phrase without any data interface involved?

As someone else mentioned, yes, Trezor is open source, which is commendable. But unless you personally review the code — which I don’t — you're still relying on the assurance of others. They say the seed phrase is never shared with the computer, but how can we truly verify that? Just because it’s displayed on the device doesn’t guarantee it’s not being leaked or cached through some vector we’re unaware of.

Even if Trezor’s intentions are completely honest and the code is clean, is it really worth waking up two years from now to find your seed phrase was compromised — simply because you weren’t given the option to generate it offline using something as simple as a power outlet?

Now I’ve got the Safe 5 sitting here, and I’m reconsidering whether transferring all my assets from the Ledger Nano X is actually a safer move. I’m trying to figure out if I’m trading one set of risks for another.

So here’s my question:
Are there any hardware wallets that match the user-friendliness of the Nano X, but allow for true offline seed phrase generation — ideally without requiring a computer connection at the start?  Again, I'm m fine with connecting for transactions and setup after that.

Thanks in advance.

Yes you must have to connect your Trezor safe 5 to the computer to create seed.

Just comment your Trezor safe 5 wallet to the USB and open Trezor Suite and Install firmware and then simply create a wallet.

But always remember this, not your key not your crypto so always keep safe your seed phrase on secret zone and do not share it to anyone. if someone get your seed then he can directly access your wallet and move your fund without any authorizations.

Honestly, it kind of makes me want to look elsewhere for another device.  Why would you want your device connected during the most important part of setup(releasing seed phrase)?

After being late to the party of becoming aware that ledger pooped in everyone's cornflakes, I've decided to go with Trezor Safe 5.  I was watching setup videos on youtube and I am concerned about having to connect to a computer BEFORE it releases the seed phrase.

Is this the case?  Can it not give out seed phrase with just a power source?

One of the videos appeared to be someone from the Trezor company, so I would think if it were possible to retrieve seed phrase without computer, that would have been mentioned, but wanted to be sure.

If it is possible, you would think it woukd have been stated because to me it defeats the whole purpose of an air gap.

Where do you see bitcoin heading since Trump signed an execetive order?

So Trump signs execective order to establish strategic bitcoin reserve.

1) Why would bitcoin price drop a little since the crypto summit last night.  Shouldn't it have gone up?

2) Where do you see it heading in price from here?

3) Has Trump removed taxes yet from crypto when selling and/or tranferring from one crypto to another?

No, the device is not new.
Yes I got it directly from Ledger.

Not sure what the most previous person means by checking the device settings.  What would I be looking for?  Can you elaborate?

Thank you.

-> 1)
I don't see a reason why your device could be compromised just because you recovered your wallet from your mnemonic recovery words. As long as those recovery words haven't touched an online device, your wallet should be safe (as far as this can be assumed for the Ledger crap because of their stupid Recovery subscription code in their closed-source firmware).

Why do you carry your hardware wallet for days in your pocket, kinda unprotected from unwanted button presses as it sounds?

-> 2)
The code to exfiltrate your wallet seed is in their closed-source firmware and nobody can check how well it is implemented. You can ask yourself what control do you have to prevent Ledger from doing some nefarious things. Well...

-> 3)
Why would you need to have your device reset somehow and to re-enter your mnemonic recovery words to have them later exposed to Ledger Live the next time? I think, that doesn't make much sense. I would be more worried about the closed-source firmware and the implanted code therein which is able to exfiltrate your wallet's main secret base.

-> 4)
It's likely still safe, but nobody can prove that to you, not even Ledger themselves, because the firmware is closed-source and not reproducible. Therefore you or anybody else except Ledger interns can check what the firmware does and how it does it.

The closed-source problem of Ledger crap existed before Ledger came up with their stupid Recovery subscription service. You have chosen a hardware wallet where you solely have to believe the marketing junk of Ledger. Like "Trust us bro, it's safe because we say it is!"  Roll Eyes

P.S.
The only good thing I see is that you verified for yourself that you can successfully restore your wallet from your hopefully analog only backup. That's a plus.

Too many users refuse or don't even think about it to verify that they can successfully restore their wallet from the mnemonic recovery words. This should be done before a user loads his wallet with funds.

I appreciate the time you took to respond, thank you.

I always thought ledger was open source?  Was it always like this?  And which cold storage wallet is best and what do you use?  I'm freaking out right now because I haven't needed to break out the ledger nano x for a while until now, and now that Im hearing about this ledger recovery firmware, it's really pushing me to reconsider.

Ledger nano x reset by itself or did it? And security concerns.

So I turned on my nano x, only to find out the device displayed the welcome screen. I dont know if it was a coincidence or if I hit the buttons by accident that this happened.  For the last couple of days, ive been carrying it around in my pocket to be clear.  First off, the button on the outside while in the closed position does not turn it on by itself. Could it be possible that the nano x slid open and I hit the other button to turn it on, then magically entered a pin wrong 3x by my leg hitting the buttons and in addition, my leg confirming the wrong password 3x by the required simultaneous 2 button push ?  I seriously doubt it!  So this concerns the heck out of me and scared the crap out of me.

So now, I had to enter recovery phrase.  This is the first time I had to use it which scared me further because what I should have done before accumulating crypto was to actually test the recovery phrase first upon purchase to make sure it worked.  Well anyway, it worked and all went well.

But then I started to think:
1)  Is my device compromised now that I had to actually enter the recovery phrase into the device?
2) Then I started to read about ledger's new update that implements a recovery feature that allows you the option to have them extract your recovery phrase to be stored with them.  I think this totally asinine and contradicts getting a cold storage wallet in the first place.  But I dont remember agreeing to it or not and this worries me.  I also read that even if you do not agree to it, the update still gives them the "ability" to extract your recovery phrase.  So how do I know if I agreed to it or not?
3) Back to question 1, could this be a hack from ledger where they randomly reset your device so that when you enter your recovery phrase to regain access, then the next time you connect to ledger live, you expose your recovery phrase?
4) Is my device safe or not?  I need to know whether to dump my crypto somewhere else and find a new device.

Thank you for your help guys.

Re: Scientists Warn That Civilization as We Know It Will End in "Next Few Decades"

On New Year's Day, several Stanford scientists joined CBS' Scott Pelley on the program "60 Minutes" to discuss the global mass extinction crisis. Spoiler: no one had any good news.

Tony Barnosky, a Stanford biologist whose work involves using fossil records to map changes in ecosystems over time, told CBS that his work suggests that extinction rates today are moving at roughly 100 times the rate typically seen in Earth's four-billion-year known history of supporting life.

According to Barnosky, such rapid population loss means that Earth is currently experiencing the worst mass extinction episode since the dinosaurs. And while Earth itself has repeatedly recovered from mass extinction events, the vast majority of the life existing on our planet at the time has not.

Unfortunately, that may well include us humans — or, at least, the trappings of our technological civilization.

"I and the vast majority of my colleagues think we've had it," Barnosky's Stanford colleague Paul Ehrlich, who also appeared on the show, told Pelley, "that the next few decades will be the end of the kind of civilization we're used to."

That grim reality, according to the researchers, means that even if humans manage to survive in some capacity, the wide-reaching impacts of mass extinction — which include habitat destruction, breakdowns in the natural food chain, soil infertility, and more — would cause modern human society to crumble.

"I would say it is too much to say that we're killing the planet, because the planet's gonna be fine," said Barnosky. "What we're doing is we're killing our way of life."

In other words? If humans don't drastically course-correct, the havoc we're wreaking on the planet will very unpleasantly do so for us. It's a grim warning, but one that other experts are echoing.

Ehrlich, it's worth noting, is somewhat of an overpopulation and mass extinction icon. He published "The Population Bomb," one of the first modern books on the dangers of excess human development and population growth, back in 1968, and was considered an alarmist for the controversial predictions he made at the time. Although not all of his contentious forecasts came true, two big ones — that greenhouse gases would melt polar ice, and that humanity would overwhelm the wild — have undoubtedly since materialized. And sadly, his reasoning for their realization feels depressingly familiar.

According to Ehrlich, the problem is "too many people, too much consumption and growth mania" — a reality that few would likely argue is showing any meaningful sign of slowing down.

"Humanity is not sustainable. To maintain our lifestyle (yours and mine, basically) for the entire planet, you'd need five more Earths," Ehrlich told his interviewer. "Not clear where they're gonna come from."

"Resources that would be required, the systems that support our lives, which of course are the biodiversity that we're wiping out," the 90-year-old researcher added. "Humanity is very busily sitting on a limb that we're sawing off."

There is a question I have about projected future soil infertility. I think everyone knows there could be a deep connection between soil fertility and animal manure. As species across the world decline in population. There is a decreased volume of animal manure reaching soils. Which could cause soil to become infertile.

One example of this is the widespread devastation of bison herds in north america. Prior to european settlers decimating their populations, it was said that bison herds in north america flocked together like locusts in their annual migration across the continent. Reduced bison herds lead to reduced bison manure which contributes towards reduced soil fertility.

But even as far back as 100 years ago, it was still very common for many to reside in independent farming communities with many animals to maintain relative fertility of soil. More recently the social exodus from farms to cities and modern living may correlate with lower populations of animals per square acre (hectare). Which could correlate with reduced square footage of arable land across the globe.

But to be honest, I can't say I've looked very far into this topic.

It is known that independent farmers in remote desert locations have succeeded in growing many acres of forestland in areas where it was considered impossible to do so.

Which scientists?  It's astonishing to me that anyone is still believing the bull crap that is being put out.  You would think by now that everyone would understand how  politicians continually fund these supposed scientists with our tax dollars to continually put out lies just to create another slush fund to dump more tax money into.
