Re: 7 Ways I Would Spend $10 Million Dollars: What About You?
by

It just occurred to me that nobody here on this bitcoin forum has said they would invest even a portion of their windfall in bitcoin!  And yet the value of bitcoin has been performing at about 70% APR so far this year.

Odd, that.

The rest will be kept in bank accounts to earn interest.

What's the best interest rate you can find?  Right now BankRate.com shows three banks that pay 2.3% on 5-year CDs.  But that rate is actually a little LESS than current inflation rate (here in the US--your country may vary).

Inflation is going up, but if you invest in a CD, you're locked in for years.

"Just saying", as they say.

Re: [VOTE] Was Jesus a real person or a fictional character?

Here's a question for ya.  If the Lord did not become man in about year 1 AD, then what separates BC from AD?  Why have so many governments and cultures around the world based their calendars on the Lord?

It's ironic that atheists try so hard to replace "BC" with "BCE" and replace "AD" with "CE" so they don't have to give any glory to God.  But what differentiates the "common era" from the years before it?  What's common about it?   Even from an atheist point of view, if they were honest, "CE" should be thought of as the "Christian era".

No evidence of Jesus?  Even the calendar gives Him glory.

Anytime this question comes up, I always think of the guy in the black cowboy hat from a decade or so ago that won the lottery big.  He was a generous outgoing guy who tried to spread it around, but a year later the news had a story about how unhappy he was.  One sentence sticks in my mind.  They said, "his daughter lost all her friends."

I can see that happening.  One friend asks for help with some urgent expense so the daughter of the rich guy gladly helps out. Then another sees that and asks for money for a slightly less urgent thing and pretty soon they're all demanding money because she gave some to someone else.

In fact, I've seen surveys of lottery winners that indicate most are much less happy after a while.

I never buy lottery tickets, partially because they're a mechanism of government corruption, partially because they are a tax on stupidity (the more stupid you are, the more you pay), and partially because I don't want to win it big and be unhappy.

Among the evidence they cite is the fact that, during the time he supposedly lived, there is no mention of him in any writings. For a person who was supposed to be a major rabble rouser you would think there would be at least one mention of him from the time he existed, but there is none.

Oh but there is!  The contemporary historian Josephus wrote about Jesus.

Have you read your bank's terms of service? Whoa!
by
KenJackson
on 10/04/2017, 18:28:24 UTC
Have you ever read your bank's or credit union's terms of service (TOS)?  I fear TOSes, so I always make a stab at reading through them and always appalled at how evil they are.

My credit union just switched providers for their online bill-pay service, so I have to agree to the new company's TOS before I can pay my bills.  It's over 9000 words long.   I'm only 15% of the way through it, but look what I've found.

Quote
The following types of payments are prohibited through the Service, and we have the right but not the obligation to monitor for, block, cancel and/or reverse such payments:
...
Payments related to: (1) tobacco products, (2) prescription drugs and devices;
...
(5) ammunition, firearms, or firearm parts or related accessories; (6) weapons or knives regulated under applicable law;
...
(9) goods or services that promote hate, violence, racial intolerance, or the financial exploitation of a crime; (10) goods or services that defame, abuse, harass or threaten others; (11) goods or services that include any language or images that are bigoted, hateful, racially offensive, vulgar, obscene, indecent or discourteous; (12) goods or services that advertise, sell to, or solicit others; or
...
Payments relating to transactions that ... (4) constitute money-laundering or terrorist financing, (5) are associated with the following "money service business" activities: the sale of traveler’s checks or money orders, currency dealers or exchanges, or check cashing, or
...

Wow!  They get to decide whether I pay for my prescription drugs with bill-pay or not.

Many of these things sound reasonable at first glance, but who decides what "discourteous" means?  If I buy a T-shirt with any political slogan on it, surely someone will find it at least "discourteous" if not "hateful".

And "money-laundering"?  Bitcoin is already accused of that.  So they have a say in how I buy bitcoin.

If the FED and the government have their way and get rid of cash, they'll be able to dictate what we buy just by threatening banks.

And check this out:
Quote
In addition to the above-referenced prohibited payments, we may also block and/or reverse payments that involve donations or payments to an unauthorized charity or non-profit organization, unless we have performed appropriate due diligence on and investigation of such charity or non-profit organization and have determined its legitimacy, in our sole discretion.

"Unauthorized charity"?  They get to decide which charities I donate to.

what tech has really blown you away recently?
This is a curious topic to be raised on this curious site for an OP with that name.  Though I wonder if you named yourself ECB just for the provocative value on this site.

I'm still grappling with the technology of the block chain and how it works. (I hope you don't disqualify math as technology.)  And I especially include the cryptographic hash.

But wouldn't someone who calls himself ECB really hate the block chain and see it as competition?

Oh we got BOTH KINDS.  We got country and western.

In days gone by, everyone would immediately recognize this as a humorous line from the Blues Brothers movie.  But time has passed, so I needed to clarify.  Here's a brief clip.

Re: Do You Think They’ll Use the US Dollar on Mars?

The first decade or so of human habitation of Mars, if it ever happens, will be a controlled environment not unlike being in the Navy on a ship at sea.

When I was in the Navy, I locked up my wallet when we put out to sea and didn't touch it again until we neared port.  There was no need for money at sea.  And so it shall be on Mars (for a while).

Did the astronauts bring any dollars with them to the moon?

I'm trying to find a good streaming site besides putlockers.ch ( currently unaccessible btw).

Interesting.  putlockers.ch got redirected to 127.0.0.1, which is the local computer.

But putlockers.today might be what you're looking for.

Goldmoney has a bitcoin clause in its terms of service
by
KenJackson
on 07/03/2017, 04:33:38 UTC
You know about Goldmoney, right?  The savings account where your deposits are retained in gold?  Well, I don't understand the connection, but the terms of service (section 5. Security) has this clause:

Quote
c. Data: Private or sensitive data, such as your bitcoin private key, is stored encrypted on the server-side with encryption techniques. ...

To see it, go to the sign up page, click on the "terms of service" link (apparently a javascript thingy) and search (CTRL-F) for "bitcoin".

 Huh

You neglected to mention the Biblical case--judgement:
Quote

Hebrews 9:27

None of us can pass judgement on our own, but fortunately, we can ask Jesus Christ to pay the price for us.

Re: Video: The European Debt Crisis Visualized
by
KenJackson
on 01/03/2015, 13:32:34 UTC
Wow.  Excellent video.  And it doesn't pull punches.  Germany says, if you want our money you must except our morals!

Similarly, in the US, many of us have been writing to Congress for decades demanding that the government be responsible and spend less money than receipts.  And for decades Congress has with one voice said, NO, we don't care about tomorrow and we like spending your grandchildren's money.

Frustrating.  So it's good to see a video that spells out the problem with irresponsible, immoral government spending and how it really does threaten at least all of Europe if not the world.

But the proposed solution of more centralized fiscal policy is clearly NOT the solution.  Decentralization is a valuable thing that offers freedom. Once you loose it, it's gone.  Also, the US has centralized fiscal policy and we're in the same boat with Greece.

Something for nothing.  Just borrow or print money.  Don't worry about tomorrow.

first all the information anyone needs on crypto can be acquired from internet and for free

That can be said about many topics.  Take the internet itself for example.  Surely anything you can learn from a book about the internet can be learned online for free.  So why would anyone pay for a book about it?  And yet books about the internet, both history and technology, abound and proliferate.

That reminds me of the guy who put his DNA sequence on some kind of blockchain...  In the future, I'd guess assassins could send you DNA proof in the form of something much smaller than a severed head which you could compare against their public DNA sequence. ..... .... You know, with that DNA sequencer you had made up at the local bitcoin-accepting 3D printer rental outlet at the strip mall.

Please tell me you write SciFi and have several novels available already!

If you don't, then please start writing today.  Bitcoin's concepts offer up some areas of thought that even Arthur C. Clarke couldn't have thought of.

You can't even pay for it with cryptocurrency. lol

Very good point!  A book about cryptocurrencies should most definitely be available for sale in bitcoin.

BTW, here's the amzon.com link for the States.

Being able to do something illegal and get away with it shows that the currency would even be useful under a tyrannical government.

OK, score one.  Good point.

But it's still a very bad idea for bitcoin to be known as the medium of exchange for illegal drugs.  It's like painting a bullseye on it and daring Congress to outlaw, regulate or tax it in some very egregious way.

Bitcoin enables freedom.  But a lot of lawmakers and policy makers hate freedom and don't need much excuse to curtail it anyway they can.

cause if it is.  i think we should stop fighting.  and use the US dollar instead..

I applauded loudly when the silkroad bitcoin-enabled illegal-drug website was shutdown because I knew a lot of people would draw this exact conclusion.

Bitcoin could enable a thousand good and noble efforts, but if it makes it easier to do any form of evil, that's what will get all the news and influence opinion.  That's what people will immediately think of when they hear the name "bitcoin".

We should all fight against illicit use of bitcoin to protect the good name of bitcoin.

It is the path of least resistance.  Gems is the gateway that can demonstrate the power of decentralization to the masses.

Gems?  Gems?  Never heard of it.

Let me google.  Oh, you mean Gems as discussed in this coindesk article.

I've still barely heard of it.  But I wish it luck anyway.

Re: Winklevoss ETF update, what does this mean?
by
KenJackson
on 07/01/2015, 18:18:20 UTC
All of this is a moot point anyway. I don't see this ever getting past the SEC.

If the SEC allows Direxion's 3x leveraged ETFs (and they do), why on earth wouldn't they allow an ETF that follows bitcoin?

One of their prospectuses says they invest in futures contracts; opens on securities, indices and futures contracts; equity caps, floors and collars; swap agreements; forward contracts; short positions; reverse repurchases agreements; ETFs and other financial instruments.

Recognize those names?  Some of them are the derivatives that caused the financial meltdown in 2008.  Now you can meltdown too.

Or you can invest in bitcoin.
