I agree, there is not much to mess with in the configuration of an S5.

My miners are all on DHCP, running on a brand new Gigabit Broadband VPN Router with HP Procurve switches.  I recently upgraded my LAN in preparation for Comcast's new 2GB high speed internet service.  Yes, that's TWO GIGABIT INTERNET.  Its already out and I am just waiting for the installation that will bring fiber to my front door.

I know you guys are trying your best to help me (for which i am very grateful; THANK YOU AGAIN for your time), but I have already tested and re-tested all of the obvious failure points.  I have pinged, trace rt,  and looked up every DNS & IP address from here to china.

I have a BS in engineering and i have worked in IT for the past 25 years for a fortune 50 company.   Trust me when I say its not a power nor an internet issue.   Having said that, I must confess that I had an early 4th of july fireworks show in my bedroom awhile back when I connected the power to an S5 backwards. . . .   Embarrassed   That's the reason for one of the bad Beaglebones.

Hey guys,
I'm hoping someone will have some input to a problem I just started to have with my S5.

Yesterday I noticed that the red light was on. When I turned it off, I noticed that the unit was extremely overheated. I let it cool, then turned it back on. This is what is going on now.

1. Unit has some trouble connecting at first, but connects and hashes. No Xs.

2. THE BEEPER RINGS NON-STOP!! This is very loud and annoying.

3. The lights in the back blink red and green together, every few seconds.

Can anyone help. I would like to get this thing running safely again and I really don't want to set things on fire.

Could you also tell us which firmware you're running it on?

I was able to upgrade to the latest firmware, but it didn't help.

Oh and the BEEPING is a SOLID SINGLE NON-STOP RING! Super loud and annoying.

Anyone tried running one of these beasts off 2 PSU's ... aka 1 for each board?
Not sure whether I am seeing correct numbers so I'll cross-check with anyone who has (or has not for that matter).

Running 1 S5 with 2 Dell 550W server PSU's ..... I took this snapshot an hour ago, but the errors have crept up to 25 (0.0008%)

EDIT: And I am running this with just an S3 fan in pull .... seems like the stock fan arrived dead!

I am not running a 2 PSU setup. But I have lots of HW errors even if I underclock the S5. I am running now with 0.02% error rate default speed. I am using a 730W Xilence PSU with 56A on the 12V rail. Could HW errors occur more often if the S5 has problems with the PSU?

EDIT: I have not seen more than 41 degrees celsius on the blades due to winter time...

It might. I've never heard of that brand of PSU. Is it 80 plus? Bronze or gold rated? Can you measure the watts at the wall. You may be cutting it close with that one, if it's not very efficient.

Edit: I have had issues running miners in too cold of an environment in the past. It could be the cold, but I still suspect the PSU.

Lowering the noise level of the Antminer S5.

I've been running miners in a 1 bedroom condo, that I share with my girlfriend. I've placed them on top of our refrigerator, in the center of the condo. She works at home during the day, so it's important that they are not too loud.

When I hooked up the S5, I heard the loud whining sound that some people had posted about and knew I had to do something about it. I already had ordered 2 Delta fans off of Amazon, but they had yet to arrive. The were $22 each and are, Delta afb1212she-pwm 120mm x 38mm 4pin pwm+tac sensor extreme hi-speed 3700 rpm 151cfm case fan.

I had seen a post from ckolivas, where they found that the flow divider was the cause for much of the noise and found great improvement in using S3 fans instead of S5 fans. I removed the pull fans from 2 of my S3s and used them to replace the noisy fans on my 2 S5s. So now I have 2 S3s and 2 S5s all with only 1 S3 fan each in the push position. The S3 fan wire connector was not long enough, so I had to cut the end off of the S5 fan, strip the wire ends, and insert them into the S3 fan connector to make it work.

Results on the S3 are, the push fan runs a little faster, but overall quitter, and the machines are only 1 or 2 degrees warmer.

On the S5s, I down-clocked to 300mhz to keep the temps at or below 60C. The fans ran at about 3200RPM but were so much quitter that the stock fans. I was able to run the 2 S3s and the 2 S5s with a noise level that is bearable. Oh and as others have said, the pull fans don't seem to accomplish much as far as cooling, but definitely drive up the noise level.

When the delta fans got here, I tried them on the S5s instead of the S3 fans. The connector is 4 pin and the fans do self speed adjust, but I had to make a slight mod to the connector end to make it fit just right.

Results, 1 of the above delta fans on a S5 is slightly quitter than the S3 fan on the S5. It cools better and can run at a lower fan speed 2880RPM @ 300mhz, compared to 3200RPM @ 300mhz. You can use this delta fan to go back up to the 350mhz stock frequency and still stay at or below 60C in a room temperature room, with about the same noise as the S3 fan @ 300mhz.

So far I'm happy with the following setup.
1 - S5 with 1 of the above Delta fan in push position running at 300hmz mining at approx. 980-990gh/s
1 - S5 with 1 of the above Delta fan in push position running at 300hmz mining at approx. 980-990gh/s
1 - S3 with 1 S3 fan in push position running at 250mhz at approx. 500gh/s
1 - S3 with 1 S3 fan in push position running at 212.5mhz at approx. 425gh/s

1. see highlighted. You meant that you clip off one or both of the rails?
2. Did you try delta at 350 mhz on S5? If you did, I am not sure what the result was as far as dB is concerned (there are free android and iphone apps that measure this). I am already at 1000GH (337.5 mhz) with quiet (46 dB) Noctua/Scythe combo, so for me it wouldn't make sense to try Delta unless i can go to 350mhz or above.

I had to shave one of the guide rails on the plastic connector. It was in the middle instead of the end.

Just downloaded an app and with one of the delta fans on a S5 running at 350mhz, I'm getting 47dB at 1 meter away. The fan is running around 3000RPMs and temps are at 60C.

The sound level reading for all 4 machines is only 52 dB 1 meter away, with my current setup.

Reporting in with an odd problem.

One of my S5's went to hashing at half it's capable rate, despite all rows showing o's. A reboot resolved the issue.

Running stock firmware from B1.

People have reported that the newer firmware solves that issue.

About fan guards and noise levels.

I have found that on all of the miners I have owed, they all run quieter without the fan guards. I don't recommend this if you have kids, pets, or are clumsy, but it's a much nicer setup imo.

Basically the fan guards block airflow, create wind resistance, and this creates added noise.

I bought miners from DHgate + EMS and I get a lot of tracking info but they don't match situation with Customs office and mail service at my home country.
DHgate and EMS tracking have also different info.
[/quote]

I'm in the US, ordered from Bitmain directly, and used EMS because it was the cheapest option. I'm not aware of an EMS anywhere near me, but I figured they might just hand it off to another company, and I took my chances anyway. The results were amazing!

Bitmain shipped through UPS because it was cheaper for them. I had B4, scheduled to ship Jan. 12th. The night of the 12th I was able to see that my packages were at the Chinese customs via searching the reference number on UPS. The packages arrived in my town on the morning of the 14th. It took less then 2 days. I was amazed.

Blockchain has it confirmed, but the transaction never showed up to the wallet.

I don't understand how this is possible. Can anyone here provide any input?

Edit: After I loaded multibit from a USB it showed up. All better now.

Well in any case, I closed my Wells Fargo account and switched to a small local bank. This is the second time I've closed a Wells Fargo account.  The only reason I went back was because they offered me $100.

This is the usual style for coinbase, if they once found themselves may bear the risk of price fluctuations with bitcoin, they will prohibit customers to buy and sell.

Any recommendations on alternative vendors?

I actually just chatted with their support with this question. Their response was that their system is quite sophisticated in looking at all transactions. So, if you are sending/receiving to a known gambling site is a red flag, sending to known addresses on the dark web. I have a feeling that they can tell if hit hits TOR.

I have heard from others on the site that they have been told similar things, like they know that they are gambling so they can only use coinbase as a wallet.. Im not sure if you were to send the coins to another wallet would help. I think if you sent your coins to a blockchainwallet and then waited hours, if not days to transfer the coins to coinbase might help, if one was doing something that they didn't like. but their excuse is that they have to abide by all these laws, so I can understand where they are coming from..

Or go thru a mixing service, but I dont think blockchain.info provides that anymore.. I dont know which ones you can trust..

That should be a non-issue. I have not been able to buy any coins to send anywhere.

I got banned once due to a mixup, and it took a good 2 weeks to get re-instated. Other than that Coinbase has been good for me, and it better stay that way cause I depend on it.

Would be shocking if they banned you for life just cause a small amount of BTC you purchased increased in price, it must be another reason.

I wish Coinbase had phone support, no excuse not to considering how big they are.

Nothing was said about a ban.

I did send a couple of heated emails though, but nothing out of line.

i believe he was trying to buy them, correct? I have heard this happen to many people. I too would like to know what their criteria is to "ban" people from buying/selling. I have done both, sold and purchased without a hitch, but that could change as I've hear people that have made successful purchases and sell just one day get banned.

When I signed up, I gave them access to my bank account, it was an option to prove who I was. But, I would like to know what constitutes "high risk"...

Yes, I was trying to buy them.

Okay. I just received a reply about the second transaction, and replied the following.

Yes this is frustrating as I have spent BTC after thinking I was making a purchase from Coinbase and would receive the BTC in 4 days. Would you kindly explain to me why I am not eligible to purchase BTC? Would it help if I put BTC in my Coinbase wallet? I could put the amount that I want to purchase in there if it helps? Is it my bank that is blocking you? (Wells Fargo) I can provide another bank account. I have heard that Wells Fargo has not been kind to Bitcoin businesses. I will gladly switch banks if they won't process transaction. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to resolve this situation.

Hi there,

Per the user agreement, please note that Coinbase may sometimes cancel or reverse potentially high-risk purchases of bitcoin. You can review our user agreement here: https://coinbase.com/legal/user_agreement.

Thank you for your understanding.

Coinbase just told me that I'm not eligible to purchase BTC. Is it because the price is up? Or maybe my bank is blocking it. (Wells Fargo)

In any case, a few days ago I went through all the steps to get my bank account verified (gave them my username and password) then placed an order for .5 BTC. They say it takes 4 days, but after 2, and a BTC price increase, they  canceled the order saying it was high risk. I understand it's my first order, so it may take time to built trust, so I added a credit card, verified it, verified my identity, and placed an order for .4 BTC. About a day later and another price increase, I get the same high risk cancelation. When I asked in a email for them to honor the first transaction, they replied that I was not eligible to purchase BTC but didn't state why? I've asked, and also contested the second cancelation and asked that the honor that one too, but I have yet to receive a reply.

Has any one else had similar problems with coinbase? Their fees are low and if I wasn't having issues, the transactions would be simple and user friendly. I want to do business with them. What advice can the community provide? Should I be buying from another vendor? Is Coinbase trustworthy at all?
