From user : Maxxx on page 6 of this thread

Yeah I recommend the test bench, plus the shelving was only like $20. Sturdy, strong and light. Can hold 1 to 2 systems per shelf (with the cases turned sideways). I got it at a local hardware store.

The stackable case is in my sig. It's the same case but with longer feet that can lock into the top of another one.

Now that summer is coming, I have blackout curtains and a portable AC coming. I've already setup an air purifier and a humidifier as well to keep the air semi-decent. The only light in this place will be the flashing miners.

Yesterday I finished my second mining rig. While my first was built in neat black case, this time I wanted to improve airflow and chose foldable plastic crate as the case. Setting it up was very easy, many wiring options, looks nice, its portable! and the airflow is almost perfect.

I think I'm in love with this design.

what are you guys using for "open" cases with 4 cards?

Spreading the cards out as much as possible and strapping a fan to the top of them. That does the job.

If I put a fan on top/under the gfx cards, should it be blowing air at or away from the gfx card?

You should do some testing yourself but I get better cooling blowing air down onto the cards, as most card fans suck in air and push it out the front of back.

I currently have three dedicated rigs, two of them using this test bench:

I hadn't seen many builds like this yet so I thought I would share. It fits a full ATX mobo and large power supply and if you have a dremel tool you can easily carve out new holes to tie down cables to. The HDD/Optical mounts underneath but if you're like me you are just booting from USB.

I am going to be putting together another 2 x 6990 rig and have a third one of these test benches on the way. When I get home later today though I will post up my two 5850 builds. Cooling is as easy as setting them on a shelf by a window and putting a small fan in front of them on low to blow the air outside. That literally is all I need to do at this point. The bench is actually sturdy enough to just tote around by the handle you can see in the corner.

Works good man, and I'll get my actual builds pics up when I'm home from the 9 to 5.

Ez nerdrage =p just commenting, here took some pics of my little setup, i think its close to the most economical you can get about 800$/Ghash

Sweet setup, is that in your basement? I wish I had a basement to mount some rigs to a wall.

Thanks, Ya thats my basement, you can always just do a freestanding rack, you can get a cheap one from home depot

Yeah I ended up getting black lightweight plastic shelving, about 6 ft high and stack the miners on there. I just need a basement, and the house to go with a basement.

I set this up yesterday. I have 3 Raedon 5850s, but one one is set up so far. I was lucky, got all of the cards for $170 each. The most expensive part was the power supply, at $250. I'm going to set this up so I can control it from my mac, so I won't need the display, keyboard, or mouse. It also has no disk, I'm running it from an 8GB thumb drive. I should get about 1 ghash when it's ready, which is pretty darn good.

Is that Ubuntu with persistence or did you install straight to the thumb drive? I can confirm that once you have tweaked the cards you should get up to and a bit over 1 Ghash/s as well.

wow,cool test bench
i'd like it,but they cant ship it to my address ((((((((((((

If you are comfortable revealing, what country are you in? If you really would like some, it might be possible to work out a deal with someone who could order and then re-ship, for btc or something. It is a very nice test bench but might not be worth the hassle if you can construct something yourself like a lot of these awesome homebrew benches and racks people are posting.

corsair obsidian 800d case w/ 10 fans !

Wow, that build looks amazing inside that case. I actually almost regret getting the full ATX Cooler Master tower with the red LED front fan that a lot of other people are using as well. I did not actually see this case when I made my build, I would have shelled out more for it.

Nice! How's that Corsair power supply? I read somewhere that it makes an annoying buzzing noise - especially when a CPU goes into one of the C states (Intel only).

You probably can't hear the buzzing anyway Grin

Awesome. I installed Ubuntu straight from the thumb drive. I don't know what Ubuntu with persistence is.

Essentially allows changes to persist across reboots on a LiveCD type installation on a thumb drive.

Maxxx, if you need Ubuntu USB with persistence, follow this tutorial
http://www.infosecramblings.com/backtrack/backtrack-4-usbpersistent-changesnessus/

Ah perfect! Straightforward tut. Thanks

glad you like the rig ;> Its my baby.... Smiley
only thing I wish I could figure out is a way to keep it cool while mining with the case closed ...

That is good to know that even with all the fans it does not stay cool enough when closed. That's the main problem I have with the Cooler Master case, even with the larger fans (which are a bit slow) I cannot keep it cool enough during the warmer days and have to prop up a small desk fan to help blow air into the case.

Temporary home for my two 5850s while I await the last piece of my "dedicated" mining rig, the bloody Sempron.

Yes, the wiring is a disaster. That's what I get for mistakenly buying a non-modular PSU (years ago, before I knew the difference).

I like it, do you run with the side on or off?

Here are the 5850 rigs using $100 combined mobo and CPU, boot from USB, and are headless once setup:

Here is a 6990 gaming/mining rig:

The 5850's are using the test bench from my previous post. Thing is sweet. I will post pics of a dual 6990 rig built on one when I get the parts.

I just can't wait for fall/winter. My furnace never generated money for me before. I'll keep mining until my furnace is more profitable.

I'll likely have to keep a window open 24/7 just to keep the place liveable in the Winter. There'll be a 6 foot spot in the grass outside extending from the window which will be like an oasis in 6 foot of snow. Where the grass grows healthy and green and the wildlife comes to live in harmony, outside my window.

What sort of configuration do you have to run the machines from a 220v outlet (like what type of three pronged connector)? Are you outside of the US since you say it is 13 amps? The 220v you commonly see in the US is usually 30 amp and for a large appliance like an air conditioner, washer, or dryer.

For my rigs, I run them with air cooling and three of them with the open case in my sig. This prevents any overheating with the cards OC'd. For power consumption, I mapped out the circuits in my place (by flipping the switches in the breaker box) and keep each circuit I'm using for mining under 80% load. So if it is a 15 amp circuit, I keep rigs drawing 12 amps combined and below on it.

This is to prevent a fire that could occur by maxxxing out a circuit which can't handle the 24/7 stress causing wires to melt or catch fire from the heat.

I use a Kill-a-Watt meter to test how many amps the systems are drawing to get a good idea.

You might have to do something a bit different if you're in the UK or find a kill-a-watt that works there.

Also, if you can afford it, renters or homeowners insurance in case you really do burn the place down. Also you usually get covered for theft as well. Just make sure you have pictures of any machines serial numbers and what not.

One last thing I want to add. Your GPUs will throttle down once they hit a certain temperature to prevent damage, most of the time. If your cards are too close together inside your case, use a PCI extender to split them up a bit more.
