Investing in cryptocoins or tokens is highly speculative and the market is largely unregulated. Anyone considering it should be prepared to lose their entire investment.

How fucking stupid is that?  Anyone investing in crypto should prepare to gain 10X their entire investment.  This would be a much better way to prepare as it is far more likely to happen than a loss of entire investment.  WTF is wrong with journalists today?

Actually with most coins it is far more likely to lose your entire investment than gaining 10x. Most projects are in their infancy and without any working product. Startups have a very high failure rate.

I think that physical wallets are a waste of money. They have no future and provide security no better than knowing the basics of information security

Could be that you are blessed with the "basics of information security" but obviously a majority of people is simply not as knowledgable as you are. There are a lot of people losing their saving through scams and elaborate schemes. Calling something providing additional security for these people a "waste of money" is unjustified.

In general it is a good thing to hear that there are new companies emerging and I can fully understand why they are seeking funding via an ICO. Just look at how much money Trezor and Ledger can raise via traditional means. It's hard to compete as a start-up against already established names.

I wish Hodler the best of luck! I'm really interested in seeing where they will take their project and I hope they can deliver. Only question that remains is basically the viability of the mentioned distribution (some may call it dividend). I mean as soon as it distributes a profit it is basically a security and the SEC already is keeping a close look on projects treating their tokens as securities. So maybe they have to change that in the near future should regulation make it necessary. But we will see. As I said: Best of luck to Hodler!

Gosh, some posts are just so painful to read. It isn't always the "whales'" fault. It isn't alway some kind of conspiracy. It is simply the nature of cryptocurrencies. It's a tech in its infancy and although it is a promising one it still is a high risk speculation. People who cannot stomach volatility should sell their holdings and leave in peace.

Hi all,I am abit late to the crypto game but find it fascinating,my budget so far is £50-100 a month(over 3-4months so far)trying to build my portfolio. I started off with xvg and dgb just to get the hang of it all,I sold them, and bought some others in some dips.this is what I have so far
200prl
236mywish
1240serenity ico
236 patron ico
120nous ico
126lance chain ico
Am I investing in the right tokens/coins?or is there a different direction I need to take?I appreciate any advice as I do want to make some profit in the medium to long term

In Crypto the risk of losing your initial investment is sky high. And it is even higher as soon as you invest in ICOs. Now it is a legitimate way of speculating your money should you be wiling to accept it as a high risk - high reward bet. You have to understand that most ICOs will eventually fail. There will be further regulation and there will be a filtering of good projects along the line. No one knows when this is going to happen but when it happens most projects won't hold up.

Personally I allocate 80% of my money in "anchor" projects like ETH or Bitcoin. 20% are allocated to high risk bets like ICOs.

There are valid projects who are offering a well thought out bounty campaign. Very often if it is too good to be true - it is a scam. No one will pay you hundreds of dollars just to retweet an announcement. That's simply unrealistic.

Re: The Merit System - Why it is fundamentally flawed
by
Nerkata
on 01/03/2018, 12:58:40 UTC
But I disagree with the gatekeeping argument. Why should only a few decide which content is good and which is "not worthy enough". Why not giving out a portion of Merit to every account older than 3-6 months and let the masses decide?

I wanted to clarify some issue here. I believe when you said "few", what you meant by that is the smerit sources right?
As far as I understand, smerit sources should be limited to some qualified users that have the ability to judge whether a post has a quality or not. Without this, then the entire system won't work as spammers, account farmers, and etc can easily give merit to their "own" account.

You can apply to be the merit sources if you wanted to. No exclusivity here.
He is not only talking about the smerit sources, members who has a lot of sMerits are also included in that "few". I think what the OP is trying to point out is the inability of lower ranks to give merit to posts that are worthy of getting merit. They can't send merits unless they will receive some from others members, but that should not be a problem if they have the ability to post a helpful and informative one.

Thanks for explaining it so well. Was struggling to put it into words. Very often I want to "merit" posters for helping me or just asking a very thoughtful questions in general. But because I "own" no merit to grant to other people, these quality posts will just drown in an ocean full of spam. It is a shame.

Abusers of the merit system could be fined with negative merit ( say -50) that would be a disincentive to sell merit ( should be a banning offence imho ), ot to abuse the system.

Some of us try to ( and have ) awarded our sMerit to post in the beginners forum.

Gatekeeping is the main purpose of the merit system. Without making good posts, the gate to higher ranks should be kept closed.

Spamming could be reduced if new members had to make their first posts on an introductory board, and tell us a bit about themselves.

Thank you for your response and I agree with you in some of your points. An introductory post would be great and would lead to a better picture "who" is talking there and what his/her goal is on this forum.

But I disagree with the gatekeeping argument. Why should only a few decide which content is good and which is "not worthy enough". Why not giving out a portion of Merit to every account older than 3-6 months and let the masses decide?

The Merit System - Why it is fundamentally flawed
by
Nerkata
on 01/03/2018, 08:40:30 UTC
Hey everyone,

before I get to the point and explain my case let me please introduce myself. I'm a mid 20s guy who has been a long time lurker in this forum. In the last year I tried to learn as much about the blockchain technology as possible and that lead me to this forum and to cryptocurrencies in general. I've been a very sceptical voice when it comes to investing (aka speculating) in cryptocurrencies and ICOs, because I truly believe that 90% of the projects out there are just pipedreams trying to utilize blockchain in a project that doesn't need the technology in the first place.

Why the Merit System is fundamentally flawed

The merit system itself is highly controversial. It is dividing this forum into different groups. The main premise of the Merit system may be good. Users get rewarded for high quality content. And by gaining merit they are "promoted" and can hand out merit themselves. Now in theory that's a great system and we have seen similar systems used in other forums as well.

The main problem with the whole premise is that in this forum we have a financial incentive to NOT give Merit to new users and rather sell Merit or exchange it with other accounts. Financial incentive you ask? Yes! Signature campaigns in bounties are up to date the majority allocation of a bounty campaign. So why should I increase the competition for stakes in a bounty campaign by upvoting new users?

Furthermore the whole system creates a massive gatekeeper problem. Why should only high-ranking users decide who gets points? There are so many alternative systems better equipped to deal with this problem. One alternative could be giving accounts older than 3 months (or 6 months) one Merit to give away each day. This forum is growing every day and very often people who answer "newbie" questions are doing as much good work as someone who explains a highly technical question. It's just helping on a different level.

So to close my argument there are several points which make the Merit System fundamentally flawed:

  • Financial incentives to not promote new members
  • Financial incentives to sell or swap Merit
  • Gatekeeping
  • A lack of rewards for users answering "newb" questions

Thank you very much!

I'm looking forward to hearing your opinion on this matter.

Re: Crypto for Teenagers
by
Nerkata
on 28/02/2018, 18:29:18 UTC
A student from another class came to me last week asking for help on doing a research paper about bitcoin.
She was pretty fascinated by it all and was intuitive enough to realize that blockchain technology can revolutionize small scale businesses, particularly in the developing world, and disrupt mega conglomerates.

So, fast forward a week, she comes back to tell me that she has bought some eth and is looking to invest in an ICO!

I had a student before who had gotten into crypto pretty seriously, but he was 18 and was doing it alongside his father.

It really made me wonder, what do you think of teenagers getting into crypto?
My first reaction was, "No no no no no no! It is way too risky and you have no idea what you are getting into!"
But then, an informed, educated 16 year old who does her due dilligence and research is a much better investor than a 30 something millenial who is just trying to make it rich and investing in whatever mcafee or supoman shills.
Am I mistaken?

You have to differentiate between teenagers being interested in the tech first and trying to learn to code and to understand the technology. Then you have "kids" chasing gains and hoping to become rich quick and focusing way too much time in chasing pipedreams. The latter is not something we want.

Does Anyone Day trade tether for those big gains? Huh Huh

What do you mean you are daytrading tether? Doesn't tethers "stability" make daytrading absolutely senseless? I mean you should daytrade a coin with higher volatility!
