Personally, with the temps raising I switched to DRK over a month ago and forgot about my 3 rigs.  Some people think it's a shitty coin, but what I had nearly tripled in value one night and has held since then.

Scrypt will fade away, Litecoin will stay but the difficulty will just keep being pushed higher due to the sheer amount of ASICs (KNC and Gridseed are the only 2 I believe will actually/have made product.  I believe KNC is using any prototype(s) now while still very profitable). 

People will scoop up DOGE by the boatload just because it still has some value, but not for long.

ASIC resistant coins are the way to go.  Bitcoin started with the techies, and ultimately will end with them.

If your using a 9800 GT, I would look into cudaminer.  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=167229.0  You'll get much better kh/s with this program and can do scrypt, scrypt-jane, vert, and keccak.  The dev seems to be adamant about keeping one mining program to handle all the algos.

I understand wanting to save some money and get hardware that is a little older, but the new GTX 750 Ti seems to be a great kh/$/w card now that cudaminer has been heavily updated.  Look at this article  http://cryptomining-blog.com/tag/gtx-750-ti-cudaminer/  6 cards do 1625 kh/s at only 432 W... and $139 a card.    These are the R9 270's of NVidia.

If the Titan is real, I believe they are using it now.  And why would ASICs raise the price?  As more multipools join in right now the prices have been going down for almost every other coin, some becoming worthless and not included within a week of being adopted.  Even with tens of thousands of MH pushing shitcoin blocks through, the prices are STILL dropping.  ASICs will just make those running only scrypt worth even less.  LTC might be the only exception, but that is a far shot in my book.

GPU mining has already almost ROI for me, maybe you just suck at putting together computers.  It took maybe 2 hours to build and configure, been running 24/7 since.  Only recently moved a couple over to Vert, which took 20 minutes to change from regular scrypt.

I had an ASIC SHA256 miner, but sold it just 2 days before it dropped almost 50% in price and 30% in efficiency in one difficulty jump.  

I also bought all of my rigs in late November-December full well planning on selling around May and re-evaluating mining as a whole.  Considering how fast SHA256 changed, how fast Scrypt is changing, I'm still sticking to it.  I've already gotten most of my investment back, and the rigs are still at 80-100% of what I bought them for, I'm still on track to double my money.

Yes, it has fluctuated from ~300 down to nearly 10, and back up to ~300 again.  That was on January 22nd, lowest on the 27th, then the highest EVER on February 11th.

Viewing it as a trading coin, yes it is capable of making great profits because of the range it covers.  That range just keeps getting smaller.

I seem to be thinking very childish and elementary on this, but couldn't you stop ASICs by making the algo REQUIRE a GPU or CPU?  Have some sort of hardware detection process, and if you don't run a certified AMD/NVIDIA GPU or Intel/AMD CPU then it won't give you work/shares. 

I'm not sure if that is really possible in the realm of mining, just something I thought of the other night.

Whatever, you guys may not like El Dude but he is right on.  LTC is the only coin to have dropped in value and consistently come back up, and even over where it fell from. 

The best sale I ever had from DOGE was 2 months ago, and has continued a downward trend week after week.  Sure, it has a "community" and people think it's funny.  It's not a serious coin though, or it would have come back to even 1/2 it's value in the past 2 months -.-

ASICs will impact some coins, but there are ASIC & Multipool resistant coins as well.  If they take hold then GPUs can still compete well through 2014.  I just switched one rig over to Vertcoin, it does take some time to get the settings right for 0 HW errors.

Most of my hash power is directed at Scryptguild currently, because I hold onto LTC also.  I didn't see the option on Clevermining or Wafflepool to hold any altcoins at all.

Here's what I've gotten so far on a test rig, it's just 3 random cards (Sapphire 270x, Vapor 270x, AMD 7950) which usually does ~1.3 MH/s.

I can probably get a little more, but no HW errors makes me happy!  I'm glad I found this thread, I had WAAAYY too high TC's at first.  This is with 8193 TC on 2 cards and 22400 on the 7950. Sounds like you had bad wiring in your house, and once you put a constant 80%+ amp load on the circuit the wiring heated up and eventually caught.

Just because it ran for a week doesn't mean your OK, you need to make sure you don't exceed 70-80% of the circuit amperage.

I've seen many houses in my area catch on fire from electric heaters.  Those big ones pull 8A - 15A alone from the socket and easily overloads it.

I've been back on forth with holding DOGE.  Like many others have pointed out, it is a very "popular coin" and has a good chance of being more mainstream than LTC.

Also pointed out already but I have to reinforce, whatever coin takes hold of everyday use will be the winner.  Go into any city and ask 100 people what bitcoin is and I would be shocked if even 5 people could give you an explanation.  So far only one of my friends knew, but only heard it is a crypto-coin.  Beyond that, I have to explain where/how to get coins, why, how it is used, etc.  They are not technology people though, I get blank stares and "Oh, interesting..." and that's it once the explanation is over.
