very good idea. Isn't the bitcoin foundation thought to do something like this? At least I thought they might be interesting in doing such things but somehow one of the biggest failures was a gold member of them...

some addition: the granted award must be valid only for a limited period, lets say 6 months.

you could run a ponzi with any kind of currency. but that doesn't mean the currency as a whole is a ponzi. the author is right about ponzi schemes except the conclusion regarding btc. It underlines though the need for more transparent exchanges with proof of 100% non-fractional reserve business model or even a decentralized exchange.

I don't like this article, I like only what they say about ponzi (all ponzi players should read)

Anyway Smiley thanks for a link.

Cheers!

every currency is and as such BTC is a Ponzi as well...

that's what I thought as well. eg the fact, that btc have solely an abstract mathematical/cryptographical value instead of any tangible value like any common raw material is actually one of the inventive advantages and not a downside. the author of the article clearly didn't understand the vision of creating a common standard value valid throughout the universe, entirely indepedent of place and materia. maybe the current exchange rates are a bit overpriced compared to the pile of difficulties the btc network is going through right now. but all the arguments in the article are plain old and apply to any other currency as well. If there'd be any flaw in the mathematical structure of btc I'd be scared but not of that kind of tunnel vision.

Thank you everyone for all the input, I think there's a lot of good input here.

I will make a few bulletpoints to clarify my position:

- I don't think MtGox is 'too big to fail'.
- I agree personal responsibility is #1, and I see it's very common in society today for many not to realize this.
...

thanks for your post.
that's one of the most advanced posts I've read about cryptocurrencies so far (and one of the longest as well). being guided by the opposite of the dark triad (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_triad) will ensure the future of bitcoin. that said, the value of bitcoin positively correlates to cohesion of its participants. according to that assumption, the highest self-interest would be to help sort things out at mtgox although not affected at first sight (like myself).

yes, should be possible. for now I'd wait till the dust has settled. the easiest way would be to access the database at mtgox. if the database is somehow "missing" there'll be the need of gathering as many saved costumer account data with btc addresses to reconstruct mtgox' wallets.

140000 btc is the honest estimate, if you sum all sell orders of 30-200btc following the same periodical pattern during the last week @mtgox. there was no real possibility to buy back lower. as soon as the whale stopped dumping for some minutes, the price rushed up again because the order book above was very thin. you could have bought only 300btc and the price would have been back to us$500+ levels. the whale dumped more then 1000btc per hour. many users where irritated, who the hell sells off all his bitcoins at such a low level.

Although I haven't got funds @mtgox anymore, I'll supply you with some information in order to support anybody who wants to sue mtgox because I'm very interested in seeing Mark Karpeles at court for his actions. lost quiet a bit during the last days when leaving mtgox.

throughout the last week immediately after the first press release of mtgox regarding halted btc withdrawals, you could observe huge rhythmic btc dumps @mtgox every 2-5 minutes following always the same pattern ("the whale of mtgox"). the sum of these dumps up to now is approx 140000 btc at an average price of around us$270. ie a us$38 mio sell-off. there were a few stuck levels eg at us$261.24 yesterday and us$148.15 the day before yesterday. these were manipulated levels by the whale serving all asks above these levels every 2-5 minutes. this is very difficult to do through the api of mtgox. but very easy if you're in charge of the order book itself.

Therefore, you'll have to deal with either a very risky investor who is going to sue mtgox as well for his us$38+ mio funds @mtgox pretty soon.

if you take into account that most of the trading fees at mtgox were paid in btc throughout the last years (default setting), it is more likely that the whale rushing all the btc on the market is mtgox resp Mark Karpeles himself. This would be an easy way to transfer the customers fiat collected throughout the last years to his own account reducing his liability in € and us$. if you further take into account, that maybe a good portion of btc stored at mtgox got stolen, mtgox might blame the bitcoin protocol ("transaction malleability") as a cause for the loss. the result: Mark Karpeles got the customers fiat, the customers got stolen btc. the customers could file a charge against an unknown person for stealing their btc.

what does this mean? --> all data on the servers of mtgox must be assured immediately in order to investigate the fraud.

I have decided to give up my gox account. Can't stand the pressure and stress waiting for good news anymore.

I've got 6 goxBTC for sale in return for fiat. or realBTC.

I'm loacted in Freiburg, Germany. Therefore SEPA transfer would be the quickest and easiest way, if that fits to you.

my offer:
3 goxBTC per 1000.-€ resp 333.-€ per 1 goxBTC.
   - - - or - - -
exchange rate 66,67% realBTC/goxBTC.

Any smaller amount instead of 6 goxBTC in a single transaction will be fine as well.

to establish some trust I'd suggest to switch to whatsapp/skype/facebook + eg copy of driver's licence vice versa.

they just uploaded a temporary replacement:

"Will be back on Thursday - about 10:00
There are some problems with bid and ask offers.
No EUR / BTC are lost!"

...and I already thought there are pirates all over the place...

actually not just selling under-priced bitcoins but buying over-priced bitcoins as well, i.e. trying to empty the market. pretty expensive. doesn't make to much sense to me. any ideas?

thanks for asking at their main thread. let's wait for the admins' response...

somebody flooded the market with under-priced bitcoins at around 6€/us$7.5 till the site was taken offline.

bitcoin-24.com is offline for >4h.
the trade history at bitcoincharts.com looks unusual: http://bitcoincharts.com/markets/btc24EUR_trades.html
there was a turnover of 5k+ bitcoins within seconds before the site closed down.
couldn't get any further information so far.
