Re: Accepting one's mediocrity is difficult

Not being the top dog can hurt.

We constantly hear things about successful people and their successful success, how persistence and hard work let them achieved their place, how they simply loved what they've been doing and this is how they made their fortunes, how they were excelling at everything they've been doing...

Of course, nobody would tell you anything about anyone who worked as hard as them yet failed for reasons not related to their hard work. What if they are just not smart enough? What if they are naturally too humble or anxious to take even minor risks? What if they are just not made for success - or, maybe it is success not made for them?

Some people never achieve more than being a dishwasher in McDonalds regardless of how hard they try - and they won't achieve anything more. Finding yourself in a similar position and realizing the limits of your potential may be frustrating.

A woman who once was a love interest of me has declined my romantic proposal because she thought that our Zodiac signs were incompatible (luckily for me), but what I've read in this thread is a completely another level of this kind of thing.

Re: Assisted Suicide

When I've been in a hospital, I actually saw some people whose condition was so bad that only death could save them from their pain. Some of these conditions are unfortunately genetic, so the fate of these people was basically decided even before they were born. The experience of communicating with them for quite some time has convinced me that assisted suicide should be completely legal, as a measure to free them from their pain.

I also believe that there should be some utilitarian measures to ensure the welfare of most people, such as subsidizing genetic screening of embryos and so on. Genetic research is a new big topic in medical sciences, and some of the next Nobel prizes will definitely be awarded for achievements in this field.

Re: Stealing to give to the poor. Is it right?
by
PonderingCuriosity

He knows that those funds he receives are illegal but he vowed not to use them for his personal needs. What is your opinion on this matter?
so in essence, when the law eventually catches up with them for the groose misappropriation of funds, he's going to give excuses that he uses his allotment for the establishment of local project in the community? And it's supposed to be understandable that he's trying to act like a good person in the midst while still benefiting from the faulty system? what he did is not different from what most politicians do. They take the allocation that's supposed to be used for the needs of the masses, embezzles the most of them and use just a slight fraction of it for some developmental projects so as to shut people out from complaining.

If everyone keeps quiet and refuse fighting against faulty systems, how will we experience positive change in our society?  If you're in a company of people who are involved in things that's contrary to what's right for you, don't try to paint yourself as the good egg in the place. Walk away and save your conscience and reputation from being associated with what's not right. Right is right and wrong is wrong. Doing something that's right to cover up for what's wrong doesn't make your wrong right.

What you said is not wrong, but if you were him, what would you do in that situation?

One thing is certain, if he stands up and exposes the hypocrisy of the rest, he will be removed from office or worse, he will be killed. Not only that, the safety of his family members is even threatened, or worse, ends tragically.

If you live in a country that values human rights like the United States, you will likely be defended by the opposition party for your actions. But if you come from a third world country with a corrupt political system: either you quietly resign or you die if you don't adapt to them.

Politics is not as simple as you think, just stand up, expose and fight, you will be supported by everyone and become an icon. Once you enter politics, you either die or join the crowd.

In my country, many honest politicians suddenly died and their families disappeared overnight, those stories are still circulating among the people and that is why no politician dares to stand up for the people these days.
Stealing is morally wrong but in politics it seems to be a normal thing for them, they will embezzle public funds without any remorse and any new politicians that is not willing to join their looting becomes a threat to them. I believe that it's easy to criticize from the outside but if you hear about how these corrupt politicians makes life unbearable for incorruptible politicians then you will understand that it is a dirty game. And quite unfortunately it seems like if you don't have what it takes in terms of being crafty then you don't have what it takes to become a politician.

For a politician to have the guts to fight corruption among corrupt politicians depends on how human rights and freedom of expression is being respected in that country, whether they are practicing true democracy or dictatorship regimes. I believe that in a country like America, a politician can speak out against corruption and get justice and protection from the government with support of the people. But in countries where human rights are not respected it's either that you join them in corruption or don't become a politician. Aspiring politician must know how politics is played in their countries before contesting and decide whether he or she can fit into the system. Fighting for true change is not easy in a corrupt government, it can cost the politicians to live in fear and even lose of life.

As a citizen of a country with a corrupt regime, your input is just spot on.

Re: How to get rich
by

Hi guys, I am 19 years old and know a lot about finance (ETFs, funds, crypto, stocks, commodities)
I have been Bitcoin swing trading for a year and I am still not profitable. I would like to be self-employed as an investor or trader after my IT education. Does trading really work in the long term to be profitable?
You know a lot about the world of cryptocurrency and the world of investment, but in a year you still haven't felt any profit. Maybe you misplaced your stock investments. It could be that you also use the wrong strategy and mechanism in managing your shares. maybe you have a lot to learn at your young age..
Or maybe cryptocurrency trading is just not for him, which is true for most people who think about crypto as of the way to "get rich fast".

My best motivation is the freedom trading offers from the regular 9-10 hours jobs . The money, the time and most especially my inner satisfaction and peace as I passionately love trading. Trading  have help to build my patience level and tolerance.

Do you really feel free? When I was a freelance white hat hacker, I hated it because I couldn't make it a source of stable income and the stress I experienced from the process eventually made me quit. Maybe if you love it then you feel truly free, but apparently it was not my case.

Re: Can tagged spammers change and become valuable contributors?
by

I think that the best strategy to deal with spammers is to ignore them. There's a block button for a reason. We don't even need mods for this, just block any user you don't like and move on. Heck, you don't even need to block anyone when you can just ignore their existence.

Fun fact, there is a certain group of people on this forum who must be spammers in disguise. These people discuss nothing but gambling. They keep engaging in counter-productive discussions that serve no purpose other than apparently advertising the crypto gambling platforms they're affiliated with. I've stamped across a disproportionately high amount of old Legendary and Hero members of this forum who advertised these websites on their profile pictures and in their signatures. I even wonder if these accounts were sold at some point, and if these are real people or some AI bots. Yet for some reason their posts are not considered low quality...

Those who take loans are hoping that the price is going to rise and when they get profit they repay the loan. It's such a bad idea to me. Do they ever consider that they can take a loan and buy Bitcoin at $65k and the price reduced to $50k? If it is 10% interest in a year the price might take over 6 months going to one year returning to the buying talk more of making profits.

Yes!
I remember some thread on 4chan from late 2017 the OP of which claimed that his brother sold his house to buy bitcoin and when the price plummeted, he committed suicide. Never invest the money you owe.

Re: Questions for Crypto Investors
by
PonderingCuriosity
on 17/09/2024, 01:04:46 UTC
Hello there!

1. I first heard of cryptocurrencies in 2013, the year dogecoin was created. In 2014 or 2015, a friend of my friends had around 0.1 BTC in crypto - yet he sold it even before the 2017 hype IIRC.
2. I did not know anything about crypto back in the day, except that they were virtual money that had actual value, and that they could've been generated on a computer.
3. The same way this term is used on regular stock markets.
4. Well, crypto is money, and in this field, there are just the same kinds of people as in any financial field. There are honest entrepreneurs and scammers, angel investors and loan sharks, short-term investors and actual Whales of Silicon Valley (a reference to the Wolf of Wall Street if you haven't seen this movie for some reason). And just like in any financial field, a ton of people who don't understand what crypto is, and what it isn't.
5. Generally positive. The positive sides of this community and cryptocurrencies in general outweigh the negatives. I'm too lazy to elaborate about this point.
6. Long confirmation time and high transaction fees for some currencies. That's all.
7. 1 bitcoin = 1.000.000$
8. I haven't noticed any hierarchy in the crypto community. I think that in the end, it all boils down to who produces the most value. Curiously, most value in the crypto community came from people who never originally pursued large profits, like the owners of the first mining pools and Satoshi Nakamoto himself. Their contributions have changed the world and now they reap huge rewards for being the pioneers of this new technology.
9. I'm here for monetary reasons, but I will definitely make some friends along my way.
10. I've made 3x on crypto during the 2021 hype and ate them all away. Cheesy

Hey, guys, a brilliant idea has just crossed my mind!

You remember how Apple decided with iPhone 7 that they no longer need headphone jacks, right? With iPhone 12 IIRC, they decided that shipping chargers is no longer required, too.

I guess I can see where it is going. First they removed the jack, then the chargers. The next thing they'll remove will probably be the frontal camera, then the fingerprint sensor and so on...

...and then, to own an iPhone, you will have to build it from scratch. And install Gentoo onboard.

That's great! Though I doubt that an average iPhone owner could install Gentoo, at least they would be able to construct their phone from scratch. Such a strategy may also let Apple cut costs on the manual factory labor they buy in China, which will be good for the US from the geopolitical standpoint since less money will go to China, and for the planet since less manual factory labor means less global warming. Everyone wins! Can't wait until they remove the GSM module from the iPhone 30!

For example: russia take ukraine let him take.
For example: china take Taiwan LET Him take.
For people it doesn't matter who rule for example taiwan and China have similar culture.
For example russia and ukraine all also eastern europe so everybody have similar culture.

So according to the OP, China and Taiwan have the same understanding of freedom and civil rights, and potential capture of Taiwan by China would not lead Taiwan into a real world Psycho-Pass surveillance state. Brilliant!

Now I want to take all your crypto away from you OP. Don't worry, I will only use it to fund fine arts. I will even be happy to share some profits with you. You can think about it as about a high-risk, high-reward investment, but unlike regular voluntary investment, I will force you to give some of your money away. According to you, if someone wants to steal your property, you should simply refuse to fight back to avoid conflict, so either run away from this board faster than me (which may not be easy, especially if you're a smoker or an obese person), or eat your words and come up with some less obvious bait.

Re: Getting out of Poverty
by

Quote
I got to thinking how come a lot of poor people stay in poverty while some manage to get out of it and make a good life. I boiled it down to two specific things: resources and character

You forgot the third thing: intelligence. Some people are just not smart enough. Just like there are people who are too naturally lazy, irresponsible and neurotic, there are people who are just too naturally dumb to hold high-paying jobs. It is uncomfortable to read, but it is a sad truth of our life, and a pain in the ass for both progressives and conservatives: for progressives because it refutes their environmentalist dogma, and for conservatives because it refutes their belief in hard work and dedication as a source of success.

Quote
What do you think is more important to have: resources or character?

Character (and intelligence) makes it more easy to obtain resources but not the other way around. People who suddenly won an astonishing amount of money in lotteries go broke way more often than people who earn the same amount of money in their business. How so? The people who own successful businesses do have character and intelligence to manage their money, and the people who win lotteries generally don't.
