Because Ripple does something that no other cryptocurrency does.
It is taking a share of SWIFT's load. Even an extremely conservative 3% SWIFT load (that is 300 Billion USD by the way) moving on RCL/xrp/rccloud would mean XRP will have to be between 2 to 4 USD to be liquid and act as counter party free collateral. additional value helps re-conciliation.

My understanding of Ripple is that XRP is not being touted as a currency (with no plans currently), but that it is used in transactions such that all other items of value can be denominated in XRPs, to facilitate exchange. In addition since there is a ledger protocol, it can process the types of transactions already being used by the banking industry while using XRPs to facilitate (if this understanding is wrong, please elucidate).

It doesn't matter what people want to do with it. It is not and cannot be a currency. Ever. This is in the code and the regulations that they must adhere to. When you have a personal ripple wallet you are monitored by FinCEN and are subject to their laws.

So when looking through the app store, I can't find any reputable wallets to store Ripple, only shady looking ones with tons of negative ratings from people saying the wallets are stealing their ripple.

There was some hype price went up now with the altcoin market going crazy people may have sold to try and make a buck somewhere else. They will be back.
