Re: Bitcoin Merch Mars Lander Hardware-Error Rate
by
Stavroski
on 20/11/2023, 13:54:56 UTC
I have a question regarding my Bitcoin Merch Mars Lander which shows a lot of hardware errors during mining.

The are some stats of my Mars Lander after mining for "1day 23h 24m 13s":

  • Accepted: 26,016
  • Rejected: 5
  • Hardware Errors: 10,928

That is a ~42% Hardware Error rate which I think is insanely high. It does mine at an average of 288 MH/s. So, just to be sure, I e-mailed Idan Abada from Bitcoin Merch and this is his reply:

"Hardware errors are normal. I see 289 GH/s, the advertised hash rate is 250. You are doing wonderful!"

When I said it's a 50% hardware error rate at that time, I got a reply back saying:

"Yes as long as your hash rate is normal, yours is very high so very good!"

So, my question is: is a 42% hardware rate accepted when mining at an average of 288MH/s? To me, it sounds like faulty hardware.

May I know how do you check the status for using Mars Lander

Thanks

Go to to the ip address of the Mars lander followed by :8080 in your web browser.

You can also SSH into it (username "pi", password "raspberry"). Once in, type "sudo screen -list" and you will be showna  few screen instances. Connect to the one that is histing CGMiner and you will get access to CGMiner. You do this by typing "screen -r ###" (### being the screen instance number).

You can do this, as long as the hub is capable of supplying at least 2.1a or so per port. Do not plug extra sticks into the USB ports on the Mars Lander itself as the USB card in the device cant provide enough power.

@Sledge0001 is a celebrity now. Even in local language newspaper, these miner images are there.

Hahaha. Lucky should be my name.

I really want to thank everyone on the forum for their support and guidance.
Particularly thank you to the following:

-CK <-- Your pool has changed my world and wallet balance forever.
Kano <-- Your software and guidance was invaluable.
SideHack <-- You evil genius your hardware although small was extremely effective.
Willi9974 <-- I used the funds won from one of your block parties to buy the hardware
419Mining.com <-- Seller of the Compac F's
AsicPuppy.com  <-- Seller of the Compac F's

I chose to share it was me for a few reasons:

1. Why shouldn't I share my success with others? I'd love to see you all hit.
2. Share the fact that you can still get lucky on the ever growing Bitcoin Blockchain even as a small or in my case micro solo miner. I am hopeful that this brings more small miners into scene.
3. Draw attention to smaller pools. It's a shame there are a few "big" pools out there that dominate most of the mining.
4. Yes I hit on a USB Miner Stick. I had 9 GekkoScience Compac F's (all overclocked) running cgminer on a HP Omen machine (That was also mining ETH at the time) hence the name "The Omen"
5. The 86TH that was seen on my account was mostly rented hashpower from Nicehash that had stopped prior to me finding the block. To be clear no rented hashpower was used to mine this block.
6. My entire USB Mining Farm consists of about 8.2TH - 9.3TH. The Omen had about 3.65TH of that at the time of finding the block.
7. I wanted to share the images of my setup and cgminer to show indisputable proof of what had transpired. (I too would be ultra skeptical if someone told me they hit like this on a USB stick miner).

Now because I hit big should I give up now? Nah... I am still mining with ALL my USB Stick miners as you can see here: https://solo.ckpool.org/users/3EoqjNmeaaVvVDCPbVXxQQRH6UFpDUqpPg

Again thank you all.

Check this out: http://solochance.com/ (not my site, I found it online), according to this - 1 in 20 million chance of solo mining that block. Really pleased for you!

Cgminer does have provisions for temp monitoring, fan control, shut down, etc. but -- there needs to be a temp monitor of some sort to feed that info into cgminer and none of the Compacs have that. You could always look for RasPi projects that deal with temp control, mount a temp sensor to the heatsink and use it to simply switch off power to the sticks.

Thanks - this is the info' I was after. Now I know the Compacs dont have any sort of temp sensing I will look into an external sensor from the Pi.

Thanks

Hi all,

Does anyone know if there is a way to monitor the temp of the CompacF to prevent issues if the stick gets too hot, etc? Is there anything within CGMiner or on the board itself that looks at temps? I dont want my fan to fail and then the thing overheat and die when I am not in its vicinity. I want to be able to monitor the temp of the stick and write a script to shut CGMiner down if something goes wrong.

Thanks

Hi All

I am trying to get my head around the bestshare report on CGMiner. I understand the figure given is the best share accepted in that particular instance CGMiner has been running. What I want to know is, what is the target share? If you get over X do you solve the block? Is the Bestshare related to the Difficulty shown?

CGMiner shows:
Diff" 18.7t, my Best Share is 2.66m. I am solo mining with minimal power as a learning process, not expecting to gain anything!

You can change your BTC address, so you have new fresh one of statistics...

I'd agree with that, but that would get very boring very quickly!
I know it's not imperative but it's just out of interest. LIke a game of bingo, you play the game, see how close you get, game ends, start afresh and so on. I dont see the point/benefit of seeing your highest share for a previous block and that being displayed. It's like hanging on to that bingo card from 3 months ago where you almost won!

With regards to the data output on the user's page:
https://solo.ckpool.org/users/1Cihg3mahU5QaQjhz8nsHHJZDQGYtTobZp

Is it possible to see the bestshare for the particular block I am working on? I like data and I would love to see how close I get, or didn't!

Thanks
Stav'
The bestshare stat shows exactly that. It resets everytime a block is found on the pool. The bestever stat is the bestshare you ever found and isn't reset.

It doesn't exactly; It shows the bestshare overall in this latest stint of trying to find a block since the last solved block. I would like to see the best share I have submitted on this round of work. When the block is solved, be it by the solo pool or another pool, this data resets.

Bestshare resets only when the pool finds a block.

The last block was in April 2020. It should be that value, or higher until the next block when it resets to zero.

Thanks both, this makes sense.

Solo.Ckpool.org - "bestshare" & "bestever" Always the same
by

Hi all,

As per the title of this post, on solo.ckpool.org, no matter what block I am on playing the mining lottery with, the data in bestshare & bestever are always the same. As I understand it, the bestshare is the "bestshare" for the particular block the miner is working on and the "bestever" is the highest accepted share ever submitted by the miner. Can anyone advise?

https://solo.ckpool.org/users/1Cihg3mahU5QaQjhz8nsHHJZDQGYtTobZp

(I know sharing sensitive data as such is a bad idea - this is for diagnostic purposes).

Thanks

Need some help.
Running 2 of the NewPac miners on a Raspberry Pi 4 2gb ram model with a 32GB micro sd boot card. The Pi did a reboot and now I can't run the command to start mining, which would be
Code:
./cgminer -o stratum+tcp://stratum.slushpool.com:3333 -u XXXXXXXXX -p x --gekko-newpac-freq 200
(replaced my username with X's for privacy), it spits out
Code:
-bash: ./cgminer: No such file or directory
! What do I do and how do I fix it?
Before the Pi rebooted, the miner said that there was no USB devices attached.
I am more than willing to reinstall rasbian and the cgminer if needed. Please let me know!

Hi,

Are you in the cgminer directory when you run "./cgminer....... "

The "./" assumed you are physically in the cgminer directory.

HTH!

I'm gonna agree with gt_addict, looks like you've got a flag set to report every gosh darn thing. Usually it just reports accepted shares, which when everything's working right you might see a few every minute. The A number up near the top is the number of accepted shares, and it's a big number so you're definitely mining and cooperating with the pool.

What's your command line? You can strip the credentials for safety, we just want to see what else is in there to help find the root of this.

Have you got the “-verbose” output set? (I think thats the option).

Yep, I have indeed. I have since turned it off and alas, only accepted shares. I was concerned that even though some shares were accepted, I was still having a lot of "Share of Target" notifications. Turning verbose off does switch all that noise off and strips it down to Accepted shares.

Calculate the chance of hitting a bitcoin block when solo mining!

Hi,

This is a great site. Simple yet effective! I appreciate the effort you've put into it!

Where do you pull your network hashrate data from to calculate the probability with solo mining?

2020deception: You did not buy it from GekkoScience. You bought it from a reseller. If you check the order details there should be further info on the actual seller, including some kind of contact info.

Stavroski: Connect to the pool and let it mine for a while - an hour at least. Typically the starting share threshold is high because pools expect a higher hashrate so it may take a while before any shares register, but after a few the pool should adjust the threshold. You may also look into the --suggest-diff command.

Thanks @sidehack. You were absolutely right. It's almost like you know the product inside and out, as if you make them! Smiley

Hi Again,

With the fear of this turning into a flaming thread for being stupid, and getting grilled for it, does this look right to you? Every now and then something gets accepted (been running for 12 hours or so) but as you can see, loads of "Share Above Target". I am struggling to get a clear understanding of the share above target (and Best Share) thing.

Thanks
