Country rankings in "Bitcoin friendliness"
by

Hello. I would be interested to know if there is a list anywhere that ranks countries according to their "Bitcoin friendliness".

For example, I know from my own experience that Germany is friendlier than Britain. What do I mean by this? I mean it is just easier to transfer money from exchanges to banks and the other way around, the German tax people are generally "cool" with people owning Bitcoin, plus you do not pay capital gains tax on any crypto held longer than a year. Meanwhile, British banks are all angsty and I have heard of people getting their accounts shut down because they transfer fiat to/from an exchange.

Has anyone ever compiled such a list? It would be interesting to do our own rankings, I think, from personal experience!

I know lots of online magazines like Forbes sometimes do lists of "ten Bitcoin-friendly countries". But these sort of articles are usually just fluff (like "ten countries it is easy to retire to" and from experience I know their "lists" are rubbish).

So which are the best from the point of view of the individual like us? I know Germany is pretty good and I would tend to imagine the smaller and more "dynamic" countries like Estonia ought to be better, but what about Asia, Central America, etc? Which country is best of all???

"There's no way to access your hidden wallet without the passphrase."

I understand that. But I am asking about ME if I lose the passphrase.

I cannot access the hidden wallet.... but is there still a way to access the coins?

Trezor standard v hidden wallet?

Hello. I understand the reasoning why having a hidden wallet is good on a Trezor device.

I have made the password quite challenging, but at the same time it is possible to commit it to memory.

Can you tell me, if I lose or forget my password, how would I retrieve my coins?

Because as I understand, I have one seedphrase for the two wallets (hidden, standard).

Would I need to enter the seedphrase in another device (eg. Electrum) to get my coins back? And would they all appear "together"?

The problem is that I have already set up my Trezor wallet, though it has no coins in it as of yet. So am I too late to sweep my funds into my hardware wallet or can it still be done? I cannot see a way of doing this.

No, you cannot sweep. You need  to use  eelectrum to transfer your funds to the trezor wallet.

The fees are high now... but I would move my coins as fast as possible, as it is safer.

Create a new wallet with trezor and click receive to see the address and transfer

I guess I can just set the lowest fees, even if it takes something like 22 hours for a single transaction.

I now have the novelty that I can see them on both the old PC in the old default wallet and the new PC in my named wallet.
Note that with having the same wallet in two different devices, you increase the risk of getting hacked.

A solution is to create a new electrum wallet with a new seed and move your coins there, as the old wallet was already used in 2 computers

However the fees are so high right now that I wouldn't recommend it.

Thr real solution is to buy a trezor ASAP, as Z-tight  said just move your coins to that hardware wallet as it is much safer.

However,  I would suggest that you take a look at this article before buying a trezor https://cryptoslate.com/censorship-concerns-grow-as-trezor-integrates-coinjoin/

Thanks for the reply. I have already bought and set up a Trezor Model One. Given the above article, is there a better hardware wallet that experts on here would recommend?

I plan to eventually move my coins to a Trezor wallet. But is there any way I can disable the old default wallet in my old PC, before I get rid of the old PC entirely?
Since you are going to buy a Trezor hardware wallet, just move all your funds into the hardware wallet with the new seed phrase generated as you set up the wallet and back it up. once you have swept your funds into your hardware wallet, you no longer have to disable the wallet on your pc or worry about it, because your funds are now in a new wallet, with a new seed phrase and has no connection with the old wallet.

The problem is that I have already set up my Trezor wallet, though it has no coins in it as of yet. So am I too late to sweep my funds into my hardware wallet or can it still be done? I cannot see a way of doing this.

So I typed in my sixteen words and the coins appeared in this new wallet.
You probably had 12 words, not 16 words.

You can delete the wallet file, but note that even if you do that, it won't permanently leave your hard derive. There are recovery tools that can recover the delete files.
The best thing you can do is to create a new wallet in your new device, make a transaction and move all the fund to that.

Yes, you are correct, I checked and it was 12 words. I think I had 16 words in my first ever wallet.

I will do as you say, as I understand about double the risk of being hacked. It is just a shame I will have to pay transaction costs for moving between two wallets on the one computer...

Many thanks for your helpful reply.

I hope someone can kindly advise me and anyone else reading it what is the best thing to do in such a scenario.

After buying a new PC (Windows 11), I set up Electrum once again after going through all the correct procedures.

On my old PC, I had my coins stored in a default wallet. So what I did was set up a new wallet on my new PC (this time I gave it a name) and imported the seed (if that is the correct, phrase). So I typed in my sixteen words and the coins appeared in this new wallet.

I now have the novelty that I can see them on both the old PC in the old default wallet and the new PC in my named wallet.

I plan to eventually move my coins to a Trezor wallet. But is there any way I can disable the old default wallet in my old PC, before I get rid of the old PC entirely?

I hope next time learn how to use the search button before you create a topic like this because there many similar topics that already posted few days ago.

There are many guides out there but you need to make sure always verify the Electrum before you install.

Check this guide https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5240594.0

Many thanks. But I searched and I could not find one which specifically showed how you solve the problem of already having an Electrum wallet in an old PC and wanting to make sure your coins are only on your new PC and not accessibly anymore on the old PC.

Got a new PC, how to set up a new Electrum wallet on it?

Hello, everyone. I have a new PC and I like having my Bitcoin in an Electrum wallet on the screen. I have Windows 11.

I have not been doing much with my Bitcoin in the past year, besides checking the Electrum wallet to see it is still there!

So I am a bit out of touch with things, as I am not really a technical person at all (I only bought some Bitcoin ten years ago as it interested me as an Economics student).

Is there a relatively simple step-by-step guide out there that I can follow? Obviously I know all about only downloading the software from the official site and verifying it via Kleopatra, but it is so long since I did it, that I am worried I will leave out something vital which might compromise me in the future...

Can anyone recommend a good online video or guide on here that I can follow to avoid mistakes? As I say, I want to have a new Electrum wallet on my new PC (and to do it so that no one accessing my old PC could get to my coins that way). Thanks in advance!

Re: Moving to a new laptop

First, you download and import ThomasV's key on GPG4Win.

Can you explain in very simple terms how this is done?

What I mean is a step by step guide through every single step of the process, i.e. where you go, what you click on?

I am just a starter and such general phrases are actually terribly confusing to me. Even the English. For example:

download and import ThomasV's key on GPG4Win

Does this mean on the platform which is GPG4Win? Or does it mean download to GPG4Win?

I would be very grateful if someone could point me to a guide which takes me through every single step of the process in as much detail as possible, preferably with pictures or in an online video. Also, one which includes everything, so I cannot be told: why did you not do that??? Answer: because I didn't know!

The above guide is good, but it is not very clear and unambiguous. It is not a step by step guide.

Can someone explain some things:

1. It says "Download ThomasV's PGP Key" and nothing else. Does this mean Download ThomasV's signature from the Electrum website? Or are they separate things?

2. The guide does not cover some important points. For example, after installing GNU Privacy Guide, I found some important points on this video suggesting that you ask "show more details" rather than just click on Yes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCG3c8a7HZI

But this is not included in the above guide. If you are doing such things for the first time, how are you supposed to know? But then, if you suffer a problem, everyone will say: Why did you not do this/that? But how are you supposed to know if such things are not included in the guide and you are doing this for the first time?

Is there maybe another guide that is really step by step and takes you through every single step and does not leave anything out? On a website or maybe online video?

Thanks.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have one further question.

When I first set up an Electrum wallet, I see that I went through Kleopatra, GPA, etc., as I still have these on my old laptop screen.

The thing is that I cannot remember the whole process, especially because I am not tech-savvy.

Is it enough for me just to download the latest Electrum software to my new PV and verify the signature?

This requires Kleopatra, if I recall, correct? Is there any link to a step by step process?

Hello. I have downloaded Electrum software to my laptop (Windows 10) and I keep my Bitcoin in my wallet on the laptop.

I have now bought a new laptop with Windows 11. I would like to have my Electrum wallet on this computer now, as I fear the old laptop is going to give up the ghost very soon. I am not very tech-savvy, but I do know all about verifying the signature, etc., which I always do when I download a new version.

Can anyone provide a link to a handy step by step guide to "migrating your Electrum wallet to a new PC"? What happens if I download Electrum onto my new laptop? Will my Bitcoin now be visible on both computers or do I make this one my "single wallet" as it were..?

Re: Trezor wallet set up confusion

Thanks for the explanations from the two posters above. To be honest, I did not know that the USB cable was considered one step away, as it is still connected to the computer and the wallet can surely be compromised that way...? Obviously not.

I am surprised that when you reconnect the wallet by the USB cable, it does not ask for your password...

Anyway, there are still two things I do not understand.

1. Besides the obvious design flaw when I was unable to have the whole “set up your PIN” table on my screen, my Suite has a permanent great big red banner “! You were disconnected” across it. I get the same whenever I click on the Trezor pages as well.

How can this be considered normal?

Now, say something were to happen to my coins. Everyone would say to me, rightly: “Were you mad? There was obviously something not right and yet you left your coins there!?” So why would I trust my coins to something that is “buggy”? But why is it buggy in the first place? How can something like this be allowed to be put into exploitation?

I have a normal PC with Windows 10 and do nothing complicated at all on it. But this programme has clearly not been tested by an engineer. Would a bridge be put into exploitation if there was something not right with the traffic light system on it? Am I supposed to just close my eyes to this red banner with an exclamation sign?

2. Secondly, related... I see on the Trezor forum that people who post tickets are told it will take TWENTY DAYS (!) to answer. If they are selling things linked to financial products, that is unacceptable. If they cannot afford the staff, they should be made to open the books to the financial regulators to prove that they do not have money to pay for a proper dedicated team.

I thought Bitcoin was all about putting power back into the hands of the simple person. But how can twenty days to reply to a ticket fit in with this? People get angry if they have to wait just one hour to talk to a bank! Bitcoin is not something illegal, it is part of the economy. I cannot understand why people do not immediately contact their elected representative, the relative financial oversight body in their parliament (like select committee) and the regulators themselves, if this is so. You are not holding something illegal with Bitcoin and financial regulators should not allow a company to take twenty days to reply to a very serious concern... especially if they have done nothing wrong and the fault, in all likelihood, lies with the software.

Here are some further oddities I found:

1. When setting up the PIN on my PC, the whole box came up on the screen in such a way that the bottom was hidden and I could not scroll down! I could just about reach with my mouse the bottom row, which allowed me to click on those numbers when required. But I could not go any further for the "OK" sign, so had to rely on just pressing enter. Thankfully, this worked!

2. As a newbie, I was surprised that there is no advice warning you if you should stay offline at any point when setting up all the password, seed and PIN information. I admit that I am not well up on such things, but I have heard of devices that can track you. Obviously, I checked for any malware first, but there is no clear information anywhere in the Trezor website about whether you should run the whole set-up organisation offline.

3. I know this seems weird, but there is no information on how to log out of Suite! Do you just click the x at the top right-hand of the screen? What is recommended? In the absence of ANY information, how is a newbie supposed to know what to do so as to not set themselves up for a possible fall?

4. My whole Suite also runs a red banner at the top: "You were disconnected".

"Download Trezor Suite from https://suite.trezor.io" I go to this page and it asks me to download the desktop app.
I've had trouble connecting my Trezor to Electrum in the past, and was able to solve the issue by installing the Trezor Bridge.

Thanks for the info. Can you explain what you mean by "connecting your Trezor to Electrum"?

Do you mean when sending to and from Electrum? Do you mean viewing your coins in some way?

I have my coins on Electrum at the moment and am happy, but wanted to get a cold wallet for added security*

[* To be honest, I have been astonished at the number of technical issues I see on their forum. I thought a cold wallet was all about just dumping your coins and forgetting about them for years? It looks like you need to check all is well every day, like a cat on hot bricks!]

Thanks. I have been looking at tutorials on YouTube, but they often jump stages and do not, for example, explain very specificially exacty what internet page to be on... I find the best is Crypto Dad:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvvzJ8EHh5U

However, I notice that there is no mention of "Trezor Bridge" here (maybe later? have not got that far). He just downloads "Trezor Suite"...

Another point: Trezor obviously works on Windows 8. But nowhere does it say expressly that you CANNOT. So what if you go ahead and then there are issues? Should there not be a clear and specific warning?

What I do not understand is: why not just provide one single step-by-step guide that covers absolutely everything?

Trezor wallet set up confusion
by
Sumarokov
on 27/08/2021, 11:42:32 UTC
So I am setting up my first Trezor wallet. I have a Model One. Trezor sent me this link:

https://wiki.trezor.io/User_manual:Setting_up_the_Trezor_device__T1

I have two PCs, one runs on Windows 8 and one runs on Windows 10.

I am using the one which runs on Windows 10, as the link from Trezor says "device is compatible with Windows 10" (meaning not with Windows 8?).

OK. So I see the first instructions: "To allow your Trezor device to communicate smoothly with Trezor Wallet, we strongly recommend installing Trezor Bridge. It is the most optimized solution that is compatible with Chrome and Firefox browsers. When you go to the Trezor Wallet website, you will see a page with a download link."

So I click on the link.. and every time, it says in red: "You were disconnected. Please check your internet connection and reload the page".

When I reload, this happens every time. I check my connection. All is well (incidentally, no problems when I open this page, as a check, on my other PC running Windows 8!).

But to even add to the confusion, I see this other link:

https://wiki.trezor.io/Setting_up_Trezor_One

This talks about all different things! It says the first thing you do is: "Download Trezor Suite from https://suite.trezor.io" I go to this page and it asks me to download the desktop app.

So which is it? Which route do I take? Can anyone provide a link to a definitive step-by-step guide to setting up a Trezor Model One wallet?

Trezor shipping oddities
by
Sumarokov
on 26/08/2021, 09:47:25 UTC
Hi, I ordered a Trezor wallet from SatoshiLabs in the Czech Republic to neighbouring Germany.

The shipping detail said: "The consignment was sent for transportation".

Then, for a full 48 hours, it just sat at Depo Nový Jičín 70, which I thought was strange.

Then "the consignment was sent to the destination country".

But 24 hours later, the shipping has not appeared on the German system and there are no/will be no further updates on the German system.

It is true that the email confirming the order said: "Please note that it may take up to 3 days until the order appears in your local provider's system."

But that is now 72 hours when an order of a very important item (!) has been "off the radar".

Any need for concern?
