Re: Opinion on the US

...
If China become the most powerful country in the world. There will be no more war. Unlike the US, which love war. If you look at all the history, how many countries have they ruin? Just recent years; Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and they are targeting Iran next. How many war has China started in the recent years?

I do believe the world will be a much more peaceful place to live in.

Unless you are unlucky enough to be a neighbor of China:

Such a peaceful people, the Chinese.  They even play nicely over fishing rights:

If the Chinese would play nice with their neighbors, the US 7th Fleet could come home.

Re: alt accounts

I have not yet seen anyone present a good reason for having an alt account.  So far, every alt account I have become aware of has existed for nefarious purpose.

Ignorance is not evidence. The fact that you are unaware doesn't mean they don't exist.

This is quite true.  Leprechauns, vampires and mermaids may all exist also.

Perhaps you could consider this an opportunity to present a reason for why it would be good to allow alt accounts.  By "good" I generally mean for the society as a whole, as well as the individual.

Do you also think that people should be required to register their bitcoin addresses? After all, there is no good reason for anonymity. Bitcoin is only used for buying drugs and funding terrorists.
Not sure why you brought this up.  I don't recall taking a position on any of these topics.  I don't really care to now since they don't really apply to the topic of this thread.

OMG, I'm an exceptionally fast reader and I don't have anywhere near enough time to read all the "terms of service" contracts for all the software & services that I use. I hate it but I'm forced to "skim" many of them because there's just no friggin' way in hell that I could possibly read all that. The only way I could see this possibly working is if there was a standard rules agreement and people had to list where there rules deviated from that. Otherwise, it's just not happening baby - it's a pipe dream.
It's likely entire communities would adopt similar contracts, sort of like Blue Sky laws. Thus you'd only need to know what's common in that area and anywhere that points differ could be automatically pointed out for you.

Gee, maybe I should bring this idea up at the next home owners association meeting.  Having a slightly more restrictive set of laws, enforced by a small additional fee, that everyone agrees to when they buy in is such a novel concept.

Really, guys?

Tell me again how this scheme differs from what I am living in right now.  I have the US law, with the local state law (CA) layered on top of that.  Then the local county law and, in my case, the local homeowners association "rules".    If I don't like the HOA, I sell and buy elsewhere.  If I don't like the CA state laws, I move to a different state.  If I don't like the US law, I immigrate to a place with "better" laws like Cuba (free medical) or Pitcairn Island (age of consent is 16 or perhaps lower).  Personally, I like my current location better than my experiences in the Pacific Orient, Europe or the Middle East.

Being able to enforce  a "no alt accounts" rule is a separate issue from having the rule.  There will always be ways to fool the enforcement.

The absence of the "no alt accounts" rule rewards dishonesty.  If there is no penalty for creating an alt account, there is no disincentive to having sock puppets that bump your threads, shill your auctions and anonymously attack viewpoints you don't agree with.

I have not yet seen anyone present a good reason for having an alt account.  So far, every alt account I have become aware of has existed for nefarious purpose.

Re: Bitcoin Forums should eliminate 'Scammer' ratings and 'Trust' ratings

More important than "trust" or "scammer" tags and the like is proof of identity.

Essentially the presence of alt accounts reduces trust.

A long time forum member, on average, is more trustworthy simply due to the invested time on the forum.  An alt account in inherently untrustworthy.

Forum accounts can still be anonymous but they should be unique for each person.

Excellent question.

Unless the user reveals the info either intentionally or not, or if the forum admin chooses to look for duplicate IP addresses, there is no way to positively ID an alt account.

Personally, I consider that a failure of this forum.

Sure, admin can't catch them all.  However, prohibiting alt accounts with appropriate negative repercussions would go a long way toward reducing their presence. It would also remove the gray area of having a "used only for good" alt account.

In a previous life, I spent a few years volunteering as a moderator on a fairly active forum.  I never saw an alt account being used for "good".  At best they were used to incite activity and typically they were at the edge (or beyond) of acceptable behavior.

If I were king, I would ban alt accounts and brand the main account with "multiple personality disorder" tag for the next 12 months.

Is this the kind of "brink" you are thinking of?

"Are subduction zones invading the Atlantic? Evidence from the southwest Iberia margin"

If correct, Europe and North America can look forward to a much closer relationship in about 220 million years.

How is this different from the 50 states (plus the rest of the world) borrowing dollars from the Federal Reserve, dollars, which too get printed out of thin air?

FTFY

I stand corrected. I always though of Hawaii as the 51st state. And the running joke about Norway being the Last State of America got at me from there, resulting in number 52 Cheesy

At least you are better informed than Obama.  He is on record as having visited the 57 states in the union, with one left to go.

thanks for the writeup. any recommendations on changing the trust level from the default 2? anecdotal stories whereby increasing or decreasing makes sense?

I keep my trust setting at "0" unless I am actively researching someone.

When I'm looking at someone, I add them to my trust list and then bump the depth up to 3.  This tells me who they trust and what the cascade of trust levels are.  It is interesting to see who is "in bed" with who.

We could turn New York and Los Angeles into giant prisons...

BTW, this is why the US citizen does not worry about the government attempting to put us all in prison.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_of_guns_per_capita_by_country

At 94.3 guns per 100 people, it would not be an easy thing to do.  Of course, the number of gun owners per 100 people is a bit lower but that just means it is harder to find the guy with the gun in the crowd with out pissing off the rest of the folks.

Is Bitcoin popular, or easily accessible in Portugal???

Your ignorant question means that either you're an American (who typically can't pinpoint any European country on a map), or elementary school was too hard for you.

Your obnoxious reply is why Americans can't be bothered with worrying about the NSA knowing everything there is to know about you.

You are just another effing foreigner with a bad attitude who hates your betters.

Decentralized Hashing article on Marketplace trust, for those new to the idea.

^ reddit

Good article.

What I find interesting is the way the system is being used.

Personally, I am using it to indicate who I trust and don't trust.  That is done by placing feedback on their page.  I make an effort to link to what is driving my opinion.  This helps me determine if I will be interested in doing trades with them in the future.

One result is individuals who I have indicated I do not trust have chosen to give me a negative mark in return.  Rather than address my concern about why I don't consider them trustworthy, instead they have chosen to "counter attack" me.  To me, this is a basic fault in the existing trust system.  Once distrust has been established, there is no process that rebuilds trust.  Those who I have marked as not being trustworthy have no recourse but to return that mark.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.  I will continue to use the system to indicate who I do and do not trust. My decisions will NOT be based on only trades.  They will be based on all behavioral clues, posts, public information and financial transactions.  Off color jokes, professed membership in racially intolerant organizations, and ridiculous Pollyannish views about anarchy and government will all be included in the assessment that I make, for my personal use.

If you wish to see my assessments, feel free to add me to your trust list with the "Depth" marker set at 1.  I offer no guarantees regarding my assessments but they are there for you to see.

Just wondering if it is possible to remotely hack a 2013 Mercedes C250 instrument system and set throttle to full? Or would a separate remote control device need planting on the vehicle to effect such an outcome?

Sorry.  Lost the quote codes...

http://autos.yahoo.com/mercedes-benz/c-class/2013/c250-coupe/features.html

It looks like there is electrical assistance for steering, throttle, and brake controls.  Whether these can override operator inputs to the point of causing a lethal accident is an open question.

A hack versus an external device is also an open question.  There certainly is a capability to remotely operate subsystems.

I'm thinking I will be sticking with older model, manual vehicles.

If all that everyone did were knowable to everyone...
Would anyone bother with lies, would there be shame?
Anger, violence, theft?
Would we be left
with only honest dealing based on our efforts?
Are we now closer or further from finding out?

Universal security cameras, at least in "public" places.

Being Hollywood adjacent, and having produced some film, I've contemplated doing my next one entirely by security camera.
My actors and actresses can act out their scenes under the view of security cameras around the city, when cut together, the greater whole emerges.

Sure to be a stealth blockbuster.  Oscar here I come.

You can do the close ups as seen by cell and laptop cameras.
