Hi frens. I just opened this topic because imo YES, Free NFTs are a waste of time.
NFT is like a key to unlock a door, like a inmutable stamp of ownership, a piece of art, and more... it's a valuable thing and can't be given for free. However you can transfer it to anyone you know, freely.
Currently I'm playing with Private NFTs. Yes, FULLY PRIVATE  I can manage my NFTs inside a DApp which is protected and also become a publisher of new NFTs. Which is sick !!
I fully own my NFTs and nobody knows I am the owner, yet I can speculate and sell them or transfer them freely. I believe this is the next step, since most NFTs are public and that's quite dangerous tbh.

If you're looking for fully private L1 defi I'd recommend  https://twitter.com/beamprivacy, as it won't be subject to KYC/AML, yet it's auditable and you can share your own information. You control absolutely every piece of info you want to share.

Privacy coins like Monero and Zcash and their derivatives have great merits and technology and provide good confidentiality, but do not fully deliver on scalability and decentralization.
Another important quality is Auditability - with Monero or Zcash it is impossible to demonstrate a provable transaction graph to an external auditor, which is often needed for businesses.  

Recently the ideas behind Mimblewimble protocol, allow for creation of a coin that is confidential, scalable and optionally auditable.

I'd go check BEAMPRIVACY coin, even if it's small, which could serve as a truly usable confidential store of value, and with addition of second-layer solutions like Lightning, will also allow for day-to-day usage.

It's been out for a while, team is active, doing talks and releasing stuff every month. There'll be soon a stable coin, dex and bridges. If I were you I'd take a look.
