Wow! This is great. But you have to edit many things. The avatar of the users are also hidden under the text. You can reduce the size of the text to fit in the mobile screen. So that the avatar and the signature can show well. If the current forum browser works well in the mobile phones then you can look from that way to develop your mobile browser.
I must join to commend our OPs genius in doing something that is totally different and quite beneficial to this forum at large, if considered and developed.
Even though there's still a lot more work to do to finesse the project to suit our experience here, am very happy that in the nearest future we may be using a different browser particularly tailored to this Bitcointalk forum needs.

The issue I see though will be that of scrutiny and acceptance by Theymos and other managerial positioned members.
Am still going to visit this feed to stay updated on your progress.

Hey thank you for the kind words and support buddy! I have spoken with theymos and he likes it, so that's good! Smiley

Hey buddy Smiley I appreciate your feedback, I used the original forum colors in the mobile theme, it may be a screen brightness issue for you.
Yes many options, I can integrate it, it would be easier to do if the theme selection option can be enabled, also I can easily add a light/dark theme switch which would solve your concerns. Thanks!
This is not a brightness issue, but my eyes are more sensitive to whiteness, and it's not so easy to darken all websites on mobile devices.
I would appreciate adding simple light/dark switch, or alternative grey-dark theme.
Another issue I often hear from members who are using forum on smartphones is more difficult way to post multiple quoted replies.

Hey thanks again for the feedback! A select system similar to the forum board selection for user quotes would be nice Smiley

Now, this is finally something that actually looks good on mobile, well done!

But I have few nitpicks from what's so far available and not been mentioned already:

1) Header image does not blend well with the background [1].

2) Username info area and topics/comments do not blend well as well. Look at comparison pic between default version and mobile one [2] — I suggest to keep white background as in default forum, so there is no problem of blending between two different colors.

[2] https://talkimg.com/image/0gIN2

Hey buddy thank you for the interest and kind words. I like people who nitpick, these are the kind of people who make sure things get done right! As this is merely a demo, there are plenty of things to do still, thanks again! Smiley

Hey buddy Smiley thank you for the feedback and kind words! Yes I am proposing creating a new mobile and standard theme for the forum, no ios or android APP will be made or required, just use your mobile browser or standard web browser. Thanks again! Cheesy

You're welcome, your work is very beautiful.
I didn't know web browsers existed, i don't really understand the point of using it since i can't log in to use it but i have to say that from a graphic point of view it's very nice and modern.
Do you do this for a living? I mean job
Thanks again, yes I am looking for a job Smiley

I am very glad that someone has finally taken up such an important issue as the mobile version of the site. I often have to go to the forum from my phone, and I just hate doing it because I am going blind. Your work already gives hope that my eyes will still see something in the future.

If we talk about my experience testing this version, I will immediately say that I see avatars, but not user signatures. I also did not understand whether it is possible to log into my account, since I do not see the profile tab at all (which other users have already written about here). I also did not immediately manage to change the section. For example, I wanted to go to "Meta", but the topics were displayed from the "Bitcoin" section.
Hey buddy Smiley thanks for the feedback and kind words! This demo is only a browser, so it is for reading only. No login required. When you select a forum board then tap the Go button you are sent to that section. Thanks again! Cheesy

Hey buddy Smiley I greatly appreciate the interest and feedback, thank you! If the theme IS hard coded "so to speak" it would still be easy for me to make an integrated mobile version.
Many options, I would replace the original forums login page with a mobile detect library, from that new login page you are directed to either the original login or mobile login with your flag marked as mobile=1 for example.
The easiest way would be to mirror the current site to a sub domain like m.bitcointalk.org and then just edit the user interface from there. They could share the same database once it's completed also.
I am confident in saying that if/when theymos asks the most trusted members of the community (those who know me of course heheh) they will vouch for me. Cheesy

I'm not questioning your reliability. Just saying that theymos does not share the forum's source code with anyone, due to the security modifications that were made. Not even PowerGlove has access to this, he works "blindly" on his edits.

In turn, what you propose is a "clone" website with a responsive template. The problem would be ensuring the same functionality if you don't have access to the current source code.

But you might be able to convince him.

Yes Sir, thank you! Smiley I also advise against editing any of the source in the OP, the site perform excellent as is, if PowerGlove is responsible, they have been doing a great job! My proposed work would be mosty cosmetic, targeted on bringing modern functionality to the user interface for the betterment of the community (mobile compatibility and ease of use, maybe a btc ticker, qr codes for addresses, copy buttons for quotes and code, that type of stuff). It would only involve the source if the theme is hard coded in certain areas, that is why I mention an option of mirroring and just editing the theme copy if needed. Thanks again for the interest and feedback!

Believe it or not, Devs of old SMF software that this forum is based on had the forethought to create a version for small screen devices. Back then I don't even think they had smartphones in mind though. Probably they considered this version for the old phones that had a T9 keyboard, a 2 inch screen at best and just scrapped by with internet access over 2G maybe. Think Nokia, Sony Ericson, Motorola flip phones etc. No interaction options either, read only. Here it is at all its glory:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5535152.0;wap

Anyway, cool project. Hopefully something like this can get put in the main site someday.
For sure Theymos can confirm the site must have a big percentage of its traffic from mobile these days.
You can't beat the convenience of typing from bed sometimes. 😅

Hey buddy thank you for the kind words!  Cheesy That is a pretty cool little gem you dropped there, you learn something new everyday. If the images were included and the page count could match the standard forum, that would be a great source of post content in the mobile browser, thanks again! Smiley

........

I like what you did, I have to say it's clean, easy to read, also very nice and pleasant.
But sorry i didn't understand what you want to do, do you want to make a theme for the forum or a real app for android?
Sorry, but i didn't understand the purpose of the project

In any case, congratulations.

Hey buddy Smiley thank you for the feedback and kind words! Yes I am proposing creating a new mobile and standard theme for the forum, no ios or android APP will be made or required, just use your mobile browser or standard web browser. Thanks again! Cheesy

Hey buddy Smiley thank you for the kind words. Yes there is a lot to do still on the viewing page, I would reconfigure the layout so that the user info is on top and their post is below that in full screen width, this demo is just to show that I CAN do it without question Smiley

Thanks again everyone, have a good one!  Cheesy

I tried checking it out momentarily, here is what I observed in a couple of minutes

1. The signature space or codes are out of place. Perhaps if you could get away of resizing them
2. The theme makes my navigation buttons at the bottom of the screen display almost invisible. Maybe because the colours are similar
3. How about Sub-board. I can't seem to get away of accessing them.

Hey buddy Smiley thank you for the feedback! I focused on main boards for the demo, but you can also manually enter any board number and tap go to access that sub-board for now.

This is interesting project since more people are using mobile devices these days, but I already noticed something I don't like.
First is bright white theme that hurts my eyes, and second thing I saw was bad signatures, or they are distorted and not shown correctly.
Pages are opening slower than I would like, but that could be for different reasons connected with hosting.
Can this be applied directly with bitcointalk domain as separate optional theme?

Hey buddy Smiley I appreciate your feedback, I used the original forum colors in the mobile theme, it may be a screen brightness issue for you.
Yes many options, I can integrate it, it would be easier to do if the theme selection option can be enabled, also I can easily add a light/dark theme switch which would solve your concerns. Thanks!

This is a massive and an interesting project for the community. Thanks OP, you have done great for the community. I have used it and understand that alot of work is put into the project.
But I am sorry to say one thing; it seems that we are all accustomed to this present formation of the forum, any other thing might not make sense to us, which is the reason the long awaited epochtalk failed.

Hey buddy! Thank you for the kind words Smiley I feel your concerns, I am not familiar with the current state of things, that's why I wanted t be clear that I am not trying to step on any toes here. Thanks again!

If I can do this without direct access, imagine what I can do with the user interface directly! Cool
Can you come up with a fake reply window/page [without a direct access] to showcase how it can look and feel when someone tries to use this function [e.g. editing part of the quotes or using different standard posting options]?
- FWIW, I really like what you've done so far, but unfortunately, I'm out of sMerits.

By using an empty install of the same forum version, I can create a mobile and updated standard theme for the forum
that can be placed without editing any of the forum source code and without any downtime or compatibility issues.
(This is assuming the forum software has the option to offer user selection of different themes)
I don't know much about coding stuff, but considering that this forum has been heavily modified, I don't think an empty install of the same SMF version is going to be enough.
- The current forum software has the option to change themes, but it's disabled (you can find it in the "Look and Layout Preferences" section of your profile).

Hey buddy! Smiley Thank you for the interest and feedback! I absolutely could make mock ups of forms, I'd start with the login page. Thank you for the kind words!
Yes, the easiest way would be to add another theme in there, however, if due to customization's it's not possible, there are still other options for direct integration. Cheesy

I tried checking it out momentarily, here is what I observed in a couple of minutes

2. The theme makes my navigation buttons at the bottom of the screen display almost invisible. Maybe because the colours are similar
3. How about Sub-board. I can't seem to get away of accessing them.

4. There is no page for profile, if you click on a profile, it will lead to the original Bitcointalk profile page.

Hey buddy Smiley I greatly appreciate your feedback, yes, all community member links in the mobile browser lead to the actual forum pages, thank you!

I think this is a great initiative, we do need a mobile responsive interface and this might just be the stepping stone for this. Using this forum on mobile is tough to type in, but I am sure developers like the OP will be able to come up with some solutions.

I am not sure about that "job" lining because if you want to do it it would have to be done by you, maybe some of the users can donate to help but probably not like a job.

Hey buddy Smiley thank you for the feedback and the kind words, I am sure we will work something out! Cheesy

Proposal:

I would like to propose that I create two new themes for the community.
I have the skills to get this job done right and will take great pride in doing so!
It would be an honor for me to have this iconic website listed in my portfolio of work.
By using an empty install of the same forum version, I can create a mobile and updated standard theme for the forum
that can be placed without editing any of the forum source code and without any downtime or compatibility issues.
(This is assuming the forum software has the option to offer user selection of different themes)

The community could then select between the classic, new standard, or new mobile themes.

The idea is good. But, as I remember how the SMF version used works, the forum template is directly integrated with many of its features. That's why the option to change themes was disabled, as using another theme would remove functions or break the changes made.

To do this, you would need to have access to the source code of the entire forum, something that the administration does not want to share for security reasons. The current theme, although visually similar to the original SMF, is very different in terms of code from the original.

I could be wrong, but this is what I remember from when I used SMF on the forums I had. In fact, it was because the forum design was interconnected with the source code that most forums at the time did not allow changing the theme. Unless they didn't make any code changes.

But, I could be wrong. @PowerGlove might be able to check this out, as he's been messing with SMF more recently.

Hey buddy Smiley I greatly appreciate the interest and feedback, thank you! If the theme IS hard coded "so to speak" it would still be easy for me to make an integrated mobile version.

I wish there was an Android or iOS app of this.

There is not much I can do about iOS, but if you want this published on the Play Store then contact me for pricing.

Hey buddy thanks for the feedback and offer, I think it should remain decentralized, requiring an app store is not an option IMO. Cool

This reminded me of an older app that fahbil created back in 2018 for Android. But I think yours looks better.

What I noticed is that if you click on one of the quote links, the app takes you to a blank page with nothing than the blue background on it. Perhaps that's something you can look into.
There is a thread in Meta that compares Bitcointalk and Altcoinstalk. The OP of that thread gave an example how Altcoinstalk has a button you can click on to copy a whole quote/code for easier pasting elsewhere. Maybe that's something you can do as well.

Great initiative with the app, thanks for creating one. The biggest issue with using the forum on a phone remains quoting to and editing parts of someone's post. That's never going to be as easy on a phone as it is from a computer because you have to make the selection with your fingers.

Hey buddy Smiley thank you for the feedback and interest! See known issues section in OP. I greatly appreciate the kind words, yes I will include a copy button in all quotes and code sections, thanks!

Your topic immediately gained my attention, thank you very much for this cool project. It's my dream to have a Bitcointalk Application for smartphones. When I was starting my UI/UX design journey, I created Bitcointalk's mobile app UI/UX concept, I'll be happy if you check my thread and rate my design - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5309058

I appreciate the effort that you put into it but it's sad that we can't log in and post from your modified design but it's a good way to check Bitcointalk and read posts when we are with our smartphone. If you are interested in and capable of implementing a good UI/UX design for your project, I think that we can work together. If there is a big demand, I can dedicate my time to create a very good UI/UX design for Bitcointalk.

Hey buddy Smiley thank you for the interest and kind words, greatly appreciated! I would like to make that a reality for the community. I am going to remain solo on this one, too many cooks as they say, but I do have another project I made for the community that could use a facelift if you'd like to show off some skills there? Let me know if you're interested, thanks! https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5410693

Hey guys Smiley thank you for the replies, normally I would quote everyone and respond individually, however, I am running short on time, my apologies.

I was unaware signatures were not shown in certain board andhad them displayed everywhere, I then removed signatures from all boards on the mobile browser for now.

The numbers are in for the first day of the mobile browser demo and they served over 21k page requests between the two demo sites!

What I have done here, is instead of posting some text stating my qualifications, I have presented a working demo, and this demo is my job application guys. Thanks, have a good one! Cheesy

Greetings Everyone! I hope you're all doing well!

I was unaware until recently that there was no mobile browsing option available to the community.

Today I am excited to unveil a working demo of a mobile browser for Bitcointalk that I have created Cheesy

Man that is a pretty sweet logo if I may say so myself! Smiley I made that back in 2019 for the 10th anniversary art contest.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5193860.msg52795174#msg52795174

My other contribution for the contest was the Bitcointalk 10th Anniversary Dash HTML5 game!!!
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5193860.msg53144771#msg53144771

Now that you're a little more familiar with some of my work, let's check out my latest and greatest! Cheesy

The Bitcointalk Mobile Browser!

As you see above it's a simple interface, a drop down menu of forum sections, an input box where
you can view the current forum section / or enter a new one manually and tap the GO button.

Page back and foward controls are represented as double arrows <<   >> and the current page number is shown (p.1)

In the second image you see I have selected Goods from the drop down menu and pressed the Go button to access the Goods section of the forum.

Above, starting at the top left, each topic begins with it's designated icons, followed by the subject of the topic in bold.
The next line we see the user who started the topic, followed by the ( number of replies, and ( number of views).
The next line shows the last reply, timestamp, and poster.

Here we see how a quote in presented in the mobile browser

And how a block of code is presented in the mobile browser

I have invested a lot of time to ensure there are no issues, but this should still be considered a BETA demo.
I have also created two demo sites, just in case! Smiley Try them both and see which is faster for you.

Links:

Main: https://bt.coolstorage.org

Mirror: https://bt.irlbtc.com

How it works:

No APP required, use your standard mobile web browser.

The CoolStorage server requests the Bitcointalk servers page as a guest user.

The page content is then strategically parsed, reformatted to fit the mobile theme, and is then displayed.

In most cases, the OP of each topic can be read in reader format as well as standard format, you
should see a "reader view available" notice in the url bar when it is available!

When reading a topic, user quotes and code snippets are presented in a different background
color to easily differentiate between users comments, blocks of code, and replies.

Each page that is viewed is cached for a duration of 60 seconds for performance purposes.
This ensures the Bitcointalk server is not being queried with identical requests.
The caching system can help lower server load over time as well.

Known issues: Certain links will lead to an empty page because the web app will only accepts numeric data to locate the boards or topics in query.
When viewing a topic, the # links to access specific posts within that topic do not work. The All posts option also does not work.

This demo is my "Proof of Work" so to speak, to show that even though I do not have access to the
Bitcointalk source, with my skills, I am still able to create an effective mobile browsing experience.

If I can do this without direct access, imagine what I can do with the user interface directly! Cool

Observations:

This is an iconic forum and providing a theme that is pleasant to use on mobile devices is important.

I am sure there is already work being done in some capacity to accomplish this goal, either through
new forum updates or other options. I am definitely not trying to step on anyone's toes here.

I simply discovered a problem and have developed a solution.

The forum in it's current state performs excellent, I would go as far as to say that it would be foolish
to change any source code at this point other than purely cosmetic updates to the user interface.

Alternatively the mobile browser could be further enhanced and CoolStorage can continue to host it or it could be set up on it's
own subdomain like m.bitcointalk.org to be a stand alone mobile browsing solution for the community,
It could also be integrated directly, and with some more work, would function just like the original forum.

I could make the app only browse board sections and when a topic is selected to be viewed the browser
will be directed to the forum page instead of the mobile app view. Doing this would allow users to be
signed in on the forum while still using the mobile app to navigate the forum sections.

Lots of possibilities! Please let me know if you have any questions or issues! Thank you!

Am I hired?  Cheesy

Hey guys  Cheesy while I do not own any loaded 1HC pieces, I would say that I do not believe MCH initial intent was to screw people, but that is unfortunately what has happened.

A while back I began working on a lookup utility for 1HC pieces for the website on a verbal agreement. I did not charge anything up front because we had a solid trading history. When I presented a working model to him he ignored my post. I later asked him in one of his posts here to check his messages, he acknowledged but then didn't get back to me on the date he indicated he would. I haven't heard for him for almost a year now. Back in Sept my Mom had a medical emergency and I've just recently been able to spend some time here again.

So I would advise to use your best instincts based on that information. I am preparing to post a negative trust based on not being paid for my work.

I only skimmed your thread, but why did you create Base57 format when Base58 already exist? What are the benefits (for collectible, physical coin and similar goods) you haven't mentioned yet?
Hey buddy thanks for the interest:) The base57 eliminates the "1" from base58. It's just another layer of protection to ensure you can easily identify the characters in the private key when it's time to do so. Cheesy

I thought Base58 supposed to solve the problem of similar character identification[1]. But i guess that's not the case.

[1] https://learnmeabitcoin.com/technical/keys/base58/

Hey it's hard to tell sarcasm in text so I will just say that yes, most here will probably know based on base58 it's a 1 in their key, however, if you're considering the scenario of keys for your kids or others who don't know anything about bitcoin, you don't want them to have any issues when the time comes, so eliminating that (is it a 1 an I an l ??) just seems logical to me. Also the font used is important, but not so much when you reduce the base. Thanks again buddy Smiley

Hey thank you for the kind words guys, they are greatly appreciated! Cheesy

The recurring theme is how old the game / thread is.

Truth be told, my submissions did not make the cut to receive an artist icon. I worked for a month straight right up to the contest deadline and after all the work I put in, to not get recognized with an icon was devastating for me. I stepped away from the forum for a bit after that, it was a tough pill to swallow. Cry

I don't think theymos saw all of the art I made, along with this game, or he would have decided differently.

There were just so many entries that it literally would have been impossible for one person to view and judge everything without some things slipping through the cracks.

Hey that's all water under the bridge as they say, you pick yourself up, dust yourself off and bump that thread 5 years later Grin

That was a joke BTW, I obviously haven't been away the entire time since the contest heheh! I was also joking about resetting the leaderboard, I just figured if anyone on there was here, especially TMAN, he'd have something to say about that!

Thanks again guys!

PS - I may have actually bumped this thread to prepare you all for my next contribution to the forum (cue intriguing plot twist music DUN DUN DUUNNNNNN)  Shocked

Wouldn't this method reduce entropy?
If I'm not mistaken a character of a minikey contains 5 bits.
Which is 110bits lesser than the standard 256 bit of security.
There's a reason minikeys normal standard of 30 character wasn't widely adopted.

If I want shorter keys , i can just settle with BIP39 seedphrase.

I thought bitaddress.org was outdated? and many use python ecdsa library.

On using AI for Feedback, the first time I used an AI
It told me Batman would defeat Superman so I lost interest.

Hey thanks for the interest Smiley It does reduce entropy, I had exact quotes from gpt and grok but don't recall off the top of my head. They still said no way to easily crack a 22 character key, but hey lets test it out if anyone wants to!

Agreed! It's a HOW-TO not a YOU SHOULD for sure heheh  Cheesy The main reason I wrote this how-to is to provide a working AND secure way if anyone wants to create their own minikeys, as previously mentioned the original was using a non crypto-safe function. We also had a creator use a compromised version of walletexplorer recently and some funding was swiped as a result.

I would disagree that bitaddress.org is outdated, it works exactly as designed and is an invaluable tool to have in your arsenal just in case.

Hey if batman can't get any kryptonite, who can? Thanks again buddy Smiley

Cheesy

dont tell TMAN!

How funny would it be if TMAN came back because he had this thread on notify, his response to resetting the leaderboard would be gold Cheesy

Reset the leaderboard, and I'll definitely be on the top for the time being.  Grin

Nice game, by the way. I saw it just now, played it for a while, and I'm already enjoying it.

Single blocks are pretty hard to pass because it's difficult to make a perfect jump for them every time. That's where I fall every single time.  Grin

Edit: Hey, @ZipReg, is it possible to allow increasing the power of the jump in mid-air? I mean, if I have reached pretty far, but I mistakenly press and leave space bar when I need a longer jump, is it possible to make it that I can press and hold the space bar again and make it jump higher from that point?

Thanks man, good to hear! Cheesy The longer you hold down the bigger the jump, you have to gauge when to let go, and sometimes you can skip over the singles with a big jump.

What do you mean by he ran the blockchain for 24 years ? What activity did it involve from him ?

Yes this is what's called a play on words, buddy Smiley You are running in the game on the blockchain, and the score is how many years you manage to run, that is all.

Thanks again guys, good to see it still entertaining!  Cheesy
