I'm happy to hear you were able to fix your problem without having to take the trouble of walking over to another computer, logging in there and posting your question. You saved a bundle; Bitcointalk customer support engineer house calls are real expensive.

You mean radio for transmitting information like they use to have in marines or they call Morse code? I think it is already phased out. will it not be more complicated if radio is to be used instead of internet in making transactions? What about the security? The world is getting more and more advance now so why go back to what was outgrown technology?
Wireless communication can hardly be characterised as ‘phased out’.

The Internet is a system of interconnected networks. The Internet as a whole doesn’t care whether a given part thereof runs on copper, fibre, wireless or avian. That’s why we have the lower layers of the OSI model.

And security is built into the blockchain, although I’ll admit that wireless links are in some aspects more (although, on the other hand, in some aspects less) vulnerable to e.g. denial-of-service attacks than fixed networks.

I don’t know where you got the idea of using Morse code. You can read about various modes here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_amateur_radio_modes

So which skills do you have (or which skills can you obtain in a reasonable amount of time)? There are various marketplaces for pretty much any service that can be delivered online.

If you deem it important to be paid in bitcoin rather than in fiat currency, that will probably narrow down your opportunities somewhat, as not all potential customers and brokers will be familiar with cryptocurrency.

If crazy-in-a-good-way ideas such as this encourages people to study for amateur radio licences, I'm all for it. One place to start is https://rsgb.org/main/faq-2/becoming-a-radio-amateur-faq/.

you can get any VPN server on the internet like express VPN, tunnelbear, hotspot shield or others a simple google search will do the trick or you can find cheap ones on underground forums.
So you wouldn’t trust a random wi-fi, but you would trust just any old malicious VPN you happened to find on ‘underground forums’. That’s bad advice.

Only connect to wi-fi networks you have reason to trust. I avoid open ones, but I often use password-protected networks operated by some bona fide entity.

Similarly, if you decide to use a VPN, make sure it’s trustworthy. After all, whoever controls the VPN will be able to read and change all your plain-text traffic. Even when you’re using encrypted applications, the VPN owner will know where you connect and how much information you send and receive.

F-Secure Freedome is a widely used VPN with good reputation, but of course past performance doesn’t predict future results. With huge userbases comes huge responsibility, and as we’ve seen with Facebook and others, sometimes the temptation can grow too big. Remember those are all companies that seek to make a profit. ‘If you’re not the paying customer, you’re the product.’

You didn't tell us which those countries are. That's very important as legislation and legal process varies between countries.

Does your country have some kind of consumer or finance complaints board where you could file a case without having to incur the overhead of full-blown civil proceedings?

I was an early PGP adopter back in the 1990s and used it on a daily basis for 20 or so years. But PGP has always largely been a tool (and toy) for infosec pros and other geeks. Safely using PGP requires a fair amount of knowledge in the first place, and verifying keys, assigning trust etc. is time-consuming. That’s why most apps use the CA-based code signing facilities built into commercial operating systems. Considering that Bitcoin and other crypto currencies are being marketed to the general public, I’m surprised that not all wallets do that. It’s not a perfect solution, but it’s better than nothing.

Re: The blockchain as a global DNS to all data?
by

Put the name on the blockchain to locate the originating IP address.  The server at that IP would be queried for supporting protocols (http, etc.)

How would that be more useful than the current, distributed DNS? We outgrew hosts files 30+ years ago.

I turned on my phone for it to tell me it was going to restart, and it restarted saying something about a local sim and it set the home page on chrome to be my network provider (I was connected to uni WiFi and its not a virus as it had an authenticated certificate signed as expected).

My question is, is it normal for the sim card to have some control over a phone (I thought it was the other way round). The phone was bought as a sim free thing and then I got the card later...
I don't know much about Android, but if I understand correctly, many carrier phones include an app called Mobile Services Manager which can be used to install stuff surreptitiously. Here's one thread on the subject: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s9-plus/how-to/psa-disable-mobile-services-manager-apps-t3764366.

I'd be interested in hearing more about this.

Re: Using Core keys on iOS as well
by

on 22/03/2019, 16:35:50 UTC
I already tested the greenaddress and I haven't experienced any issue yet with iPhone 6 I don't have experience on both edge and BRD. So only greenaddress that I could suggest to you.

All of them only have sweep option to redeem bitcoin from your old address they don't have the option to import the private key that you can use at the same time for both core and mobile wallet.

If you want to use your bitcoin wallet from bitcoin core to mobile I think you need to switch to android because there are more wallet option that you can use where you can import your wallet without sweeping.
Thanks for your response. I guess I’ll just have to wait for a sufficiently secure iOS wallet that also allows private keys to be imported.

(Android isn’t an option for me - I have it on a work phone and I hate it 🤢)

Using Core keys on iOS as well
by
bitperson
on 17/03/2019, 07:30:20 UTC
Hi,

It’s been a while. Hopefully everyone’s doing great.

I have a Bitcoin Core wallet I intend to continue using. But I would now like to use those same keys on an iOS device as well.

Which iOS wallet would you recommend? I understand that from a security viewpoint, BRD, Edge or Greenaddress would be preferable. Do any of those provide a workable way of importing my keys from Core? Not just sweep them - my objective is to use both wallets concurrently with the same set of keys. And are there any potential issues I should be wary of?

Re: Why are so many accounts being reported as hacked?

My guesses would be phishing (the lookalike .to site, with its high placement in Google results, seems like a perfect way to collect Bitcointalk passwords) and password stealing malware disguised e.g. as altcoin wallets.

Re: How to run a wallet
by
bitperson
on 16/05/2018, 15:42:46 UTC
I've been reading notsofast's article  about security. He said the safest way to run an altcoin wallet is to compile an open source code. Any guides how to do it? Is it called to run a client from a command line?
Not exactly. Compiling means turning the source code (the written commands) into machine readable code that a computer can run efficiently. It does involve typing a number of commands at your shell prompt, but you only compile a program once, after which you can run it any way you want. Compiling your own software is considered safer than running binaries compiled by others because the latter are more difficult to examine for back doors and other malicious features.

How do a attach a screenpic WORD doc here? I went thru all the icons and can't find a way.
Please use a descriptive subject line when asking a question.

Newbies can embed images only by purchasing a copper membership. But you can upload the image somewhere else and post the address here.
