Re: importing public keys, derivation paths and zero balance

i figured it would be easier (and safer for me) to get the full blockchain + bitcoin core (the same version i used previously) on a non connected laptop and just watch the addresses.

thanks anyway a lot for the help.

thank you.

Note: Those "combo()" desccriptors are probably your keystore before migrating to a descriptor wallet and most probably where your bitcoins are if you've just migrated.
The other descriptors are the ones created after migrating and probably empty. (those descriptors tell that it's a migrated wallet)

indeed, i migrated the wallet time ago (using bitcoin core).
i know that i have the funds, because 2 of my addresses have funds.

i just want a way to:
- check the balance of all my addresses
- have a list of all my addresses that i can give around to people (don't want to reuse the same wallet address)
- don't want to download the whole blockchain (eg. using bitcoin core)

any solution for this?
i thought that i could do this with the public keys but i think i was wrong.

ps: i am not afraid of the console, if there was a way to connect bitcoin core to an external node i'd use that

importing public keys, derivation paths and zero balance

hi,
i used bitcoin core long time ago and exported the public keys.
i have a file like this:

```
combo(xpub.../0'/0'/*')#6h...
combo(xpub.../0'/1'/*')#23...
pkh([fd.../44'/0'/0']xpub.../0/*)#59...
pkh([fd.../44'/0'/0']xpub.../1/*)#93...
sh(wpkh([fd.../49'/0'/0']xpub.../0/*))#6ls...
sh(wpkh([fd.../49'/0'/0']xpub.../1/*))#077...
tr([fd.../86'/0'/0']xpub.../0/*)#7253...
tr([fd.../86'/0'/0']xpub.../1/*)#073...
wpkh([fd.../84'/0'/0']xpub.../0/*)#w9xl4...
wpkh([fd.../84'/0'/0']xpub.../1/*)#l3r7...
```

i created 5 wallets and imported the public keys.
the import accepted only the 'xpub...' part.

why do i see zero balance? i had some funds in it.
why don't i see the addresses that i previously used?

i just want to have a watch only wallet, from which to check:
- the addresses
- the balance

thanks in advance

This is simply saying you don’t have knowledge about LN. here is a comprehensive list of threads for LN network by Pmalek

Definetely.

Also this is how to set up a LN using electrum wallet https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5259973.0

_Got on that link, images are missing._

Why would someone have to learn about channels, trampoline routing, etc.
Point is, if we want people to use LN, it should be dumb-easy and more 'transparent'.

Other networks' L2 are just much more user friendly - maybe it's the tooling, I don't know.

That's my point of view though. I don't feel safe using it - due to ignorance, I agree, but it needs to be much more easier for me to use it.

I believe that stating that Bitcoin will be used as a currency, and that the current high fee problem is temporary (if nothing changes), is merely wishful thinking. What I observe (though I may be mistaken) is that the fees have decreased because usage has temporarily decreased.

Bitcoin's value may persist and even increase because it is perceived as an artifact.

In the dev mailing list, I did read that some were suggesting the removal of the feature that enables ordinals or even banning them entirely (!!).

We have no control over these matters; things may change, but I don't see any changes that would enable Bitcoin to be used as it was originally intended.

It's just that talking about LN, I'm curious why currently there are still many people who don't try using LN? Am I wrong in retrieving the data? Or is there something that keeps people from popularizing the use of LN? Because honestly I just found out about LN some time ago and what I know is that the network is much cheaper than the main BTC network.

speaking for myself.
i don't know how to use securely.
does bitcoin core supports it?
what opening a channel means?
do i need to have another wallet?
what means paying an invoice? (seen it from kraken, which allows withdrawal via LN).

i m not risking using it.

Re: bitcoin core v25 - set hdseed

ok clear, will try things out.
i guess i need to save the xpriv from the `listdescriptors` command, right?

if i may take advantage of your generosity, can you explain this (i take my previous points):
- i sent some sats to some address that were in the dumpfile, *bc1..abcd*
- if i do 'getaddressinfo' of the *bc1..abcd* address i sent money to it tells me 'ismine: false'

i don't have a full node to test this at the moment:
- is the money gone?
- or will it have the ability to 'see' that address balance if i run a node?

thank you again

You should instead be backing up entire wallet files and restoring them when you need to restore backups, rather than trying to find an individual component of the wallet.

If you insist on using the seed, you need to create a legacy wallet and use the sethdseed command. Then you will get the addresses that you expect. Then you should migrate that to a descriptor wallet. However, after migration, the seed will not be used by the wallet anymore. New descriptors are generated which essentially replace that seed.

so would that mean that a paper wallet can't be done anymore?
what are other solutions that do not imply saving a file?

plus, i read the legacy wallet option is going to be removed from the bitcoin core, so that wouldn't be a long term solution.

i wanted to stamp the hd seed in some metal washers, and this is a bummer.
maybe now i find a solution, then in two year that won't work.

consider i want to do something that would last forever. what would you do?

hello, would like some help with the new bitcoin-cli.

- i did create a wallet some time ago with an older version of bitcoin core
- got the dumpfile
- i saved the private key 'L...' with 'hdseed=1' with address 'bc1...'
- i sent some sats to some address that were in the dumpfile
- changed pc
- got bitcoin core v25 installed
- `bitcoin-cli getdescriptorinfo "wpkh(<seedtakenbefore, the one with hdseed=1 mentioned on the 3rd point>)`
- `bitcoin-cli importdescriptors '[{"desc":"wpkh(<seedtakenbefore>)#<checksumfrompreviouscommand>","timestamp":"now"}]'`

now, problem is, that i want to see my addresses.
if i do 'getaddressinfo' with one of the address i sent money to it tells me 'ismine: false'.

question:
- how can i see my previous addresses?

thank you in advance
