Re: Is this a bubble? If not, what are the fundamentals?

Good analysis of the fundamentals.

If what you say is true, that the fundamentals of bitcoin are as a store of value, then it faces the same risks as gold backed currency and banking in general. I'm not sure what might set it off, but a run on bitcoin is a very real threat.

The emergence of a competing and superior currency or currencies could be the catalyst for something that. I would keep my eyes peeled.

What's next? Are we ready to start the selection process?

Re: Introducing the Bitcoin100: A Kickstarter for Charities
by

Along these lines, it seems that much of the recent discussion in this thread is about whether or not to donate to archive.org. My suggestion is that instead of talking about the merits of this individual contribution we should be figuring out a process for choosing the charities.

I propose something like this:

Bitcoin100 members nominate charities
From the nomination list, members vote on and choose, let's say, 50 charities
Those 50 charities are sent email queries
The first charities to accept Bitcoin, from the selected list receive the first round of funding

The tricky part of this is that we have to approach a lot of charities in order to find at least 10 to donate to, but we don't want to alienate charities if we have more than ten that end up agreeing to accept Bitcoin.

Okay, I'll pledge 1 BTC at current market value, up to 10 charities, with the contingency that the charity selection process gets figured out in a way that I feel comfortable with.

I'd like to make a pledge, but I'd like the charity selection process to be more worked out before I do. Maybe there should be a separate thread just for discussing the best way to select a charity.

I'd prefer a charity that focused on extreme poverty issues, such as vaccination, infant mortality and education. I like the idea of forwarding the cause of Bitcoin, but I want to make sure I'm doing something worthwhile with my money at the same time.

FWIW. I like these:

Don't know if this has been suggested before, but it'd be a great feature to see bitcoin value in dollars right in the client. Not super critical, but I think it'll help the regular joe once it gets around to that. BTW, really diggin' multibit. Very slick.

Fantastic design work.

IMHO, drop the "from govt. and banks bit". Most people really don't give a shit about the currency manipulation by the fed. "Privacy" is pretty powerful by itself, and it's more complete representation of Bitcoin. I would dig a poster with the tagline: Free, Private, Secure

Thanks to the help of Bitcoin Evolution I've just made Green Monk available for purchase with Bitcoin. Just click on the Bitcoin "buy" button.

It was selected for the YALSA Top Ten Great Graphic Novels for Teens Booklist, and I think it's pretty awesome.

From Ain't it Cool News:

Quote
This book is about as thrilling a read as I've read this year. Writer/artist Brandon Dayton takes the concept of a "walking the Earth" style warrior monk and injected it with adventure and wonder. Fans of SHAOLIN COWBOY are going to want to check this one out. Like that book, the story's protagonist is calm when faced with danger and is able to gracefully and poetically deal with those challenging him. Unlike SHAOLIN COWBOY, though, this story reads in a calmer, more serene fashion compared to Darrow's kinetic opera. Imaginative ideas abound in this book, like a blade of grass that can cut mountains and a witche’s head held at bay by gripping its braided lock. Every single paneled page of this book is a simply lined work of art. This is the type of indie book I long for: filled with creativity and surprise, and most importantly, fun to read! It's the type of indie book I will tell folks about when they ask what indie books excite me today. Seek out and support this book. It's a top notch adventure story by a creator I guarantee you'll be hearing more of.
