So as silly as the post looked, benjamindees made a good point.  "Request private key!"  A long range nfc reader (hah, far field?) could be a security issue.

I've heard recent stories from the UK, saying nfc payment systems are reading cards accidentally (at longer ranges than intended). Clearly if this can happen accidentally, there's the possibility for this kind of attack to made deliberately.

Thank you ineededausername, sorry to hijack the thread.  I was really just making sure you didn't require an escrow that I was expected to pay fees for.  But it all seems above board, so no worries.

And btw, could someone with experience tell me (or point to a thread) about what to expect for escrow fees with these auctions?

My bad, so apparently I just didn't read the op close enough.  If the min increment is .02 and I screwed that up, feel free to put me down for 35 @ 1.39 (not that it will be relevant for long)

Re: Islamic mining pools?
by
cocodapuf
on 16/07/2011, 23:58:16 UTC
What's wrong with a regular mining pool? Why the fuck do you need an "islamic" mining pool? Good ol' American Bitcoins too infidel for you?
Seriously dude... you're gonna go full-racist over banking rules? How is this matter even worth being such a douchebag about?

Look it's simple, from the first post:
principles of Islamic Banking: sharing of profit and loss.
Basically, Islam has specific beliefs about moral methods of banking, all he's asking is if bitcoin fits these ideals.  And honestly it's no stranger than any other religious laws or beliefs...  Jews have special diets and basically can't eat anything including more than 2 food groups. Catholics pretend to drink the blood and eat the flesh of the lord they worship. And Mormons, don't even get me started... magic underwear?

Look, religions are all dumb, but that doesn't mean you get to hate on people for believing something silly.

Quote
Well, lemme tell you something. There are no Islamic bitcoins. Just lots and lots of American ones.
Ugh... no, there aren't.  If they were all American they'd be called "dollars" and would be worth about 15 times less.  And finally, YOU are part of the reason bitcoin is hurting, and you probably know it.

These new cards should be announced at the AMD developer conference in three days
Let's see if these new cards have an increased stream count. Rumor says it's only a die shrink though.
Hey!! That's not all bad news! A die shrink means lower power consumption and possibly higher frequencies.

Re: Heard about Bitcoin on Aljazeera
by
cocodapuf
on 11/07/2011, 03:31:10 UTC
I have mixed feelings about this.  Any news about bitcoins spreading around is good but Al Jazeera has a very bad anti-American reputatation.  They went out of their way to tell the terrorist side of the story in Iraq and as an anonymous currency it isn't a good idea to associate with that kind of thing.  As a libertarian I know drugs should be legal so things like silk road are okay but there should be a way to root out other criminal groups who try and use bitcoin.
Hey, I don't want to make this a big thing, but...

1. Al Jazeera is a pretty highly trusted news source, plus it's like they say "no such thing as bad press".
2. Terrorists in Iraq?

Re: New Pool: Triplemining.com || 0.5 BTC jackpot every day special ||
by

I'm sorry for my last post, i had a bad day Wink

Let my try and explain this:

So, first of all, there is no middle, you only have one parent.

etc...
Thanks, no offense taken. I think I may just switch over to triplemining, people are certainly embracing the idea.  I just have a couple things I wanted to clarify, since I haven't seem to have found a definitive answer.

First, in that example... Nevermind, I saw you've already answered this question in another thread.

Also, where is your cut here MrSam? I mean the website is great, professionally designed, probably gets lots of traffic, and you've got no ads.  You're offering features that all the other pools charge for, but you only charge 1% (which can be earned back).  I don't know what the back-end for a mining pool requires, but I imagine you need to run some kind of central server to manage all the nodes, track stats, etc.  On top of all the setup costs there's the labor you're putting in and the risk you're taking by potentially attracting the kind of attention Deepbit and BTC Guild have been getting lately.  How do you plan to sustain it?  I get that your business model may be a kind of trade secret, so it's cool if you don't want to go into it, but that's the last part that seemed fishy to me.

Heh, I guess right now deepbit is kinda like the devil we know, they put their cut right on the front page, anyone can see where the catch is there ;-)

Re: UPnP for auto-forwarding Bitcoin ports
by

A malicious application would focus on deleting everything, so what more is destroyed if UPnP is enabled?
Where'd you get that idea? A malicious application would have no interest in deleting stuff, your PC is way more useful intact, but under remote control.

Even if it's unfounded, bitcoin already gets too much flak for seeming like a pyramid scheme.  Isn't actually turning it into a pyramid scheme the last thing we need?

Keep in mind, the tech is solid, the only way to kill bitcoin at this point is through bad press.  We don't need more bad press.

I'm actually getting tired of having to defend triplemining from being called a pyramid scheme. We are one of the only pools that returns everything to the members, where you see some other pool owners running off with 3,4,5 % of the pool income (With deepbit leading this), and yet there nobody complains.

But the moment that you redistribute some of the pool income based on work, you are called a Ponzi schemer.

I really have nothing to gain by you joining or leaving, my income stays the same: 0 BTC.
Alright, so probably what's happening here is I just don't understand how this works.  How exactly are your % of the total hashes translated into payouts? What if you're the pool owner, what if you're hashing under someone, or if you're in the middle.  Also, don't get me wrong, I don't think anyone's calling this a Ponzi scheme, that's just something else.  But the description on the front page makes it sound... "pyramidy", maybe you just need to look at the wording.

Another question though, you mentioned you give everything back to the workers and that your income stays at 0.  How do you plan to keep the site going?

I c.

Well the reason I am concerned is I travel with my laptop and I am worried about the TSA goons groping more than just my private parts!
Hah, well I trust Mt Gox way more than the TSA.  Actually truth be told, after Mt Gox's reaction the their security breach and their response to the public, I really do think they're pretty trustworthy these days.  Hell, Sony was never that forthcoming, really very few companies seem to be willing to both take security seriously and tell the truth to the customers.

Hey guys, I've got a question for you.  How big is the block chain going to get?  I ask because I want to make sure the usb drive I use is actually large enough to encrypt an entire client indefinitely.  So I know that as blocks get very old they're no longer saved, but aren't the new blocks larger than the old blocks?  Meaning, won't the size of a full install always increase?

Or then there's the other option, of just using a 8 or 16 GB drive and using it as a full OS+bitcoin client.

So I take it you could have two or more of these usb drives (even full OS+bitcoin client as you say) and if one of them craps you dont lose your BTCs?
Not all all, actually that's why security is such a big deal.  "Wallet" is a bit of a misnomer, it's really more like a key to your online wallet.  Anyone who has access to your bitcoin wallet has full access to your account, even if it's just a copy (just like if someone had a copy of your vault key).  That's why it's so important to make multiple copies, just make sure they're always encrypted, so only you can access those multiple copies.

So, how secure are the "wallets" that TradeHill, Mt.Gox and other trading sites use?

If their servers crash - like if my laptop HD crashes where my wallet is - does that mean bye2 to all them BTCs?
My understanding is yes, you'd lose everything if your account is compromised, and yes if the site when down you'd lose access to the wallet for that time.

As far as I can tell, I don't think they give you a "wallet" exactly, instead they give you access to your funds in their system.  Effectively they act as your bank, but without interest (unless you count market fluctuation).  But if you trust them you could certainly keep your funds there, then transfer bitcoins to your everyday account for spending cash.  Kind of like visiting an ATM.

That's really not a bad system.  Simply keeping your device offline is a good way to protect it from remote intrusion.  Although don't you need to put that machine online to transfer coin from the account?

I just heard about the bitcoin android app though, makes me think a old android phone with no service plan (so offline) might mike a good mobile wallet.  Of course assuming you have a wifi connection wherever you need to spend anything, you'd also need to use whatever wifi connection they have, and you really can't trust public wifi.

how is bitcoin different from silver? when you give your silver to someone, it's gone. no proof, no chargeback. just like bitcoin. your argument was?
Not really.  Silver can't be hacked or lost due to tech problems or power outages.  It has real world uses that guarantee it will always hold some value.  It doesn't depend on a computer for it to exist.
Whoa, silver can't be hacked? If you were to keep your hard earned silver in your underwear drawer and then keep your back door unlocked, what's stopping someone from walking in and grabbing it.   Likewise, if you leave your wallet in your windows user folder, unencrypted, with your firewall down, what's stopping someone?

People, this is digital cash... only people with way too much money actually carry 5 grand in their wallet, put that stuff in the bank man.   For your own sake try to carry under $100 in your everyday wallet (digital or otherwise).  Unless you can get a 3rd party to secure your coin for you, managing a BTC savings account on your own is a lot like keeping a briefcase full of money; yes it certainly does carry with it serious security concerns.
