Re: What type of success do you have selling on localbitcoins ?
by
coqui33
on 01/01/2014, 18:11:24 UTC
Do you intend to become a regular professional trader, or is this a one-time thing for you as a customer?

If you want to become a professional trader, I would be happy offer advice. I am currently writing a walk-through for commercial trading on LBC. The two most important topics are: (1) How to accept fiat safely and (2) How to build a reputation.

On the other hand, if you just want to sell some coins, I suggest that you join localbitcoins.com and sell your bitcoins for my Paypal at: https://localbitcoins.com/ad/34960/?ch=4ja

Check my current price. It is based on Bitstamp and updates every hour.

**Immediate. Reliable. From the comfort of your desk.**

Accepting PayPal is normally risky, but I am a professional trader (buy and sell), have done many hundreds of trades for many hundreds of different customers, and enjoy a spotless reputation. I would not jeopardize my business for a few thousand dollars.

Re: Question about litecoinlocal.org and localbitcoins.com

When you initiate a transaction you have two options.  You can either use the localbitcoins "transaction service" or you can agree to have the bitcoins sent directly to a bitcoin address.
No. Your choices are transaction service (for FTF) or escrow (for  online). I bellieve that the original question was about online trades using the escrow service. There is no provision within the LBC system for direct BTC transmission. Of course, you can use LBC only to make contact, and then do whatever you mutually agree, but this is not sanctioned by the system for online trades because it would be exceedingly foolish. In short, if both parties ignore the LBC system services or violate its rules, then anything is possible. But that was not the context of the question.

May I ask how many different individuals you have traded with using LBC in, say, the past 6 months? Rounded off to the nearest 100.

Thanks, with regard to local bitcoin, can't i just meet with someone and give them cash after they've transferred bitcoin to my phone in person?
Yes, indeed you can. LBC was originally started to support that method and many sellers use it primarily today. I no longer do.

I used to sell BTC face-to-face but stopped doing so about 6 months ago. After an experience with counterfeit USD, I made my meeting-place the lobby of my credit union, where everyone knows me. I would accept the buyer'a cash and hand it to a bank teller. The bank teller verified that the cash was good, and then I immediately transfered the coins to the buyer. Then one day it dawned on me that I did not need actually to be there. If a buyer was willing to hand his cash to a bank teller and receive his BTC instantly, and I could see the deposit as soon as the teller hit her terminal button, why meet physically? The buyer can go to his nearest bank, I can sit at my office desk, and we can do the trade faster, easier, and with less driving.

From the buyer's viewpoint, it may seem safer to look someone in the eye rather than over the internet, but this is an illusion. First, with LBC the seller's coins go into escrow tagged with the buyer's userID the moment that the buyer requests a trade. The seller can only release the escrow to the buyer (presumably after the bank deposit appears online) but cannot get it back. Second, as with any other business, the tradesman's reputation is everything. If a seller has a spotless reputation after trading with several hundred different buyers, physical presence does not really change anything.

In short, if you are more comfortable meeting a seller face-to-face, I would encourage you to do so. Just keep in mind that many no longer consider physical presence necessary.

You answered yourself. Traders usually set prices by formula based on exchange rates. There can be various reasons why no one answers your ad, your lack of reputation, for example.

Judgment of Solomon. I say take the deal and run. And be carefull from who you buy in the future  Tongue
I agree. I believe that LBC's resolution was more than fair to the buyer.

This is toal BS by localbitcoins and make me never want to use them. Pay the man his coins!
wow, this really is bad.
I would probably never try localbitcoin.
Please do not write off dozens of honest businessmen because of a support person's ill-chosen words. Just be cautious in choosing a trader. Traders' policies and feedback reputations are open and visible to the public. Some of us even offer no-questions-asked money-back guarantee when requested within 24 hours, thus bypassing the LBC dispute system entirely.

Yes, it was in an e-mail, via the support ticket system of localbitcoins, here it is: http://postimg.org/image/83durg4zf/

wording: "Please also note that we  would have released the escrow
for you already, if that reddit post would not have happened. Now it can
take quite a time to get a peaceful resolution here."
I agree. Giving that excuse was a bad business decision by LBC support. They might have a legitimate reason to delay your refund. I cannot imagine any reason to blame a delay on your publicly complaining.

LBC merely enables each buyer to choose a seller. They are not an exchange. In future:

1. Choose a seller with over 400 customers and a spotless record who offers a no-questions-asked money-back guarantee. For example: https://localbitcoins.com/accounts/profile/coqui33/?ch=4ja

2. If you are dissatisfied with the seller you chose, write a negative feedback to warn off others.

PenAndPaper is correct. Braiwallets are also cracked when people use a passphrase from published literature. Better to use something that you can easily remember but no one else would know, like: "At the Gomez's 2010 Christmas party, when Uncle Jim put the lampshade on his head, he tripped and knocked the Christmas tree over."

Re: Important questions to buy and sell bitcoins online in recommended places
by

Of the "sites" you list, btc-e, bitstamp, and campbx are commercial exchanges. Localbitcoins matches up individual buyers and sellers. And coinbase is a middleman service between users and a commercial exchange. The other "sites" are merely ways of sending fiat from one person to another.

Your questions show some misunderstandings (that your coins are somehow stored in you computer, for instance). They will be easier to answer if you first read Getting Started With Bitcoins.

when bitcoin gets lost like that, or when it gets seized by a government, as recently happened in the news, like this... what happens to it in the long run? Is it forever out of circulation?
If no one can find the private key, the coins are lost forever. If the FBI knows the private key, it is up to the agency whether or when to spend them or exchange them for dollars.
