Re: 13 Dead at mass shooting in California Bar

I don't think any reasonable person could argue that stricter gun laws 'can' make a difference, whether they would or not is another matter. I would like to think that a mentally ill person would, at the very least, find it difficult to obtain firearms and/or ammunition. It is a difficult situation to be in, as there will always be a black market where anyone (with money) can purchase whatever they want, but surely it makes sense to make it as hard as possible for them to do so. At least it would ensure that anyone who wanted a gun has to jump through a few hoops to get one. Anyway, it's a tough argument and I don't see it finishing any time soon - plus I agree with points on both sides, getting scratches on my balls from sitting on the fence  Huh

Re: The concept of marriage is morally obsolete?
by

on 13/11/2018, 23:16:22 UTC
The concept of marriage and what it entails can differ greatly depending on where you live. Certain countries give all the rights to the husband, with the wife potentially trapped in a marriage she doesn't want to be in, others relatively 'equal' rights. It is generally not about the marriage itself, but the laws of the country where the married couple reside which make the difference. I have not personally got married yet, but have absolutely nothing against the concept.

Re: Paper Money - The Greatest Scam
by

on 13/11/2018, 23:10:00 UTC
The 'paper money' that you say is a scam is still probably the most widely accepted form of currency worldwide. Scam or not, I can buy real world products with it. I have no doubt that crypto will have a huge influence, especially with international payments, but 'paper money' will be around for a while yet.

Re: Need advise for transferring money overseas to buy BTC from the US

I've tried coinbase but it takes too long for the fund to available, 2 weeks and even more if you keep depositing the money.

Is there a reason why a two week delay is a concern? I wouldn't have thought it to be that relevant. Just transfer the money in and wait until you're comfortable with the price before buying. No point rushing to buy, just transfer the funds in as and when you have them. That would be my plan of action anyway.

Re: Cultural Appropriation and Acceptable Racism
by

on 23/10/2018, 02:53:23 UTC
It's a tough conversation, and a multi-faceted one. There are situations where it is being taken 'too far', but there was always going to be a push back, before (many years down the line) it settles down. There are huge advantages to being born white, but that's not to say that everyone will benefit. As coins4commies said, many other factors will dictate how much of an advantage you could potentially end up with.

Gender
Race
Sexual orientation
Religion
Family origin/class/makeup
Body image
Learning style
Geographic background
Language

Try any one of the following and see how it turns out for you...

* Leave everything else the same, just change your name to Mohammed/DeShawn on a job application.

* Be 'of pregnancy age' when attending an interview.

* Walk down the street holding hands with another guy/girl

* Spend a month in a small village in North India - eating, drinking, working, sleeping etc.

Plenty more ways you can find out how you are privileged or not, especially if you look further afield. It has improved to some extent, but there's still a long way to go, and it will be an even longer process unless those at the top stop to pull up those who could not get there otherwise. Equal amounts of hard work does not create equal opportunities.

Re: SKY NEWS BBC NEWS CNN NEWS C4 NEWS ITV NEWS ARE LIARS STATION NEWS ..
by
cryptothief
on 23/10/2018, 02:32:56 UTC
Switch it over to what? Are you saying that everything reported on all these stations is false? Seems a bit over-dramatic. Are you referring to a particular collection of news items and the manner in which they have been reported?

There will always be an inherent bias in media, whether as a company dictating the type of stories and how they are covered, or a reporter bringing personal opinions to their coverage, either intentionally or unintentionally. Are you saying that we should rely on the notoriously reliable internet reporters, with a camera and a vendetta? I tend to read multiple sources on any news items I am interested in, and rarely take anything as gospel. Many news items are more about confirmation and persuasion, that's why most people enjoy watching/sharing items that reinforce their already entrenched views.

Anyway, you're perfectly entitled to your opinion, just seems like you may be generalising a tad too much.

Re: What would education be like in a society where work was optional?
by
cryptothief
on 23/10/2018, 02:20:00 UTC
Advancements in AI and the gradual digitization of society could one day lead to a world where earning a living is inessential to living a decent life.

Not sure I agree with this statement, the key word being 'decent'. The growing disparity of wealth throughout the world is an indication of things to come, and the gap will only grow wider as the expected advancements eat up the the jobs that are maintaining those at the 'bottom of the food chain'. Take away the opportunity for them to earn money, and you pass responsibility to feed their families to those higher up the chain, ultimately putting them at their mercy. Education, as mentioned, is of course important, but will do very little to genuinely benefit the majority - at least on a financial level. There is some truth that everyone has a creative streak in them, and maybe with significantly more time to spend on being creative, it could benefit society (overall) in that way. Just concerned that there would be far too many left relying on other's generosity, which - historically - doesn't normally end well.

Re: Are you in favor of same sex marriage?
by
cryptothief
on 23/10/2018, 02:06:31 UTC
My perception is that it's a free country and everyone can do whatever they want.
But at the same time I don't think it should be forced down anybodies throat who disagrees either. (examples being mutli gender bathrooms and the similar.)

If anyone should be accused of forcing something down anybody's throat, it's someone dictating to others who they are allowed to marry. And not sure what multi gender bathrooms have to do with same sex marriage either? One of the key reasons the right to marry is so important, is the number of benefits that married couples get that cohabiters/civil partnerships do not (at least in many parts of the world anyway). Marriage, in my humble opinion, is an outdated custom, but the benefits enshrined in law that accompany it, mean that it still has great financial significance. Not my place to tell anyone how they should think and/or act, so I tend not to do it, shame more people don't feel the same.

Re: This is the best time to invest and join bounty campaigns
by
cryptothief
on 21/10/2018, 03:19:02 UTC
Nothing is ever guaranteed, but I've gradually been increasing my holdings as the year's progressed, slowly bringing my dollar average down. Recovery back to levels at the beginning of the year would need a minimum of 5x on the coins I held then (some less, most more), but with the extra money put in, I am now positioned to take profits on some of them with smaller rises. Bounty campaigns are even more risky, it is not just about the overall market rising anymore, investors have become more savvy (and rightly so), it's not going to be like last year when almost every project hit the exchanges at multiple times the initial value. You have to be very careful which projects you choose to spend either time or money on.
