Especially not if coin keeps dropping about a hundred bucks a day. Been saving up my BTC for most of the last year for a new miner project and in the last 60 days enough value has evaporated to have paid for half the first batch. Most of what was set aside was taken in when BTC was approximately twice its current value. Been in the game for five years and I still can't get used to the volatility inspired by manipulation and speculation. Really wish more people weren't greedy or idiots.

Sidehack,

In your five years of mining, was there any time that you turned off your miners because it was not profitable? How much are you paying for kwh? Do you also get ding with distribution and transmission charges? It seems that lots of people talk about kwh but they don't take distribution and transmission charges into account.

Re: 3-phase 150kVA Transformer 600V to 240V - How many S9 miners can it supply?
by

Is the power distribution panel 3 phase as well? If so here's the math

Watts / volts x 1.732

that's how you get amperage draw if you place a single miner across each phase

1400w / 240 x 1.732 = 10.1 amps

400 / 10.1 = 39.6

39 (round down) x 3 = 117 miners

Hi Al,

I searched through the forum and below is my understanding

150kVA, assuming pf =1, and 80% for continuous load = 120kW

120kW/1400W = 85 miners

I have seen people done it the other way around

150kVA is connected to 400A 240V 3 phase panel.

400A * 240V * 1.732 = 166,272 watt

with 80% for continuous load = 133kW

133kW / 1400W = 95 miners

Why would you write a business plan at $10k BTC, when that was just a pipe dream until 3 months ago?

I'd say a business that doesn't have a firm grasp of the reality of the market they're in is destined to fail.

I wrote my business plan with BTC being $3K, not $10K but I came across several business plans with BTC at $10K.

Cash flow is extremely important for everyone i.e. little guys and also big guys. Does anyone remember this?

Bitcoin Mining Firm KnCMiner Declares Bankruptcy https://www.coindesk.com/kncminer-declares-bankruptcy-cites-upcoming-bitcoin-subsidy-halving/

For the guys that expanded too aggressive, they should be hurting now but it will take at least 6 -9 months before they run out of money. Currently, they are dumping bitcoin to keep the lights on. Most business plans are written with bitcoin priced at $10K or higher. The weak miners will go belly up first if BTC continues to be under $10K. Because they are selling BTC to keep afloat; hence, the BTC price will be depressed for the coming months.

Re: Advice on mining farm Quebec
by
digger888
on 08/02/2018, 02:00:13 UTC
Hello Guys,

Hope you are doing well.

Currently have 2 working mines 1 in China 1 in Venezuela.  Things in these countries work in different manners (not as strict) as in Canada, so the process of building the mines was not so complex.

Due to the political instability in both countries and policies regarding crypto, I've been contemplating on moving both mines to Quebec, Canada, and expanding it for hosting further clients.

I was hoping to get some guidance and recommendations on how will be the best way to approach such a project, more specific on finding the right building with the electrical capabilities to host mines anywhere from 1MW to 5MW.

Ive been in contact already with the hydro company, however they aren't the faster moving when it comes to advices on locations.

Im currently in Toronto, and any help, guidance, advice, will be deeply appreciated.

Regards,

Danny

Danny,

I am in the process of expanding my mining facility in Calgary, AB, maybe we should talk. In Calgary, if you ask for 2MW then you don't have to pay for the $10K feasibility study. So the sweet spot is 2MW, don't give the energy company the range of 1MW to 5MW because they will try to get as much money from you as possible.

Give it six to nine months when companies go belly up due to cash flow issues. Most companies have 2-3 months of working capital then they would have to liquidate whatever they mine or to sell their equipment to pay the rent.

Anyone has any speculations on the Chinese firm that Samsung is teaming up?

1) Bitmain
2) Lightning Asic
3) Halong miner
4) ebang

We know about Baikal - Maybe this is a misdirection and it was about Russian and not Chinese firm.

Samsung signs a chip deal with Russian Bitcoin mining company Baikal

It’s not clear exactly what sort of products Samsung will be making, but according to reports from Korean media, it’ll be working with Taiwanese firm TSMC. The company currently supplies chips for a number of firms set up solely to mine cryptocurrencies, including the China-based Bitmain. Meeting the demand for these chips has added around $350 million to $400 million to its quarterly revenue, says TSMC.

It is a bit of speculation at the moment as no one knows for certain. It is best to load up on BTC and BCC to get ready for the next batch of new miners in the coming months. Maybe weeks?Huh

Re: Buying Bitmain or Bitfury ASIC chips directly
by

on 29/01/2018, 03:08:57 UTC
Hello, I have a reseller in China who is able to give me BM1387 (the chip used in S9) but without the datasheet we can't create our own miner.
Is there someone able to find the datasheet? Clearly BITMAIN hasn't released it

You won't need a datasheet. Just copy or build an electrically equivalent board to mount a stack of chips on. The only think tricky about this ASIC is the secret recipe inside.

All the circuitry of miners is very, very simple.

If you get ASICs to sample, we can just replace one ASIC on a working board to test. easy, easy.

Head's up. Common Chinesium scam method:
- send working samples, aka actual ASICs pulled from S9 miner, to build trust
- continue to send pulled chips to get the pump primed
- receive money for bulk order
- send 20% real chips, 80% fakes
- Oh, so sorry for your trouble, please return failed units so we can analyze
- replace the 80% fakes with another 20/80 mix
- Oh, so sorry for your trouble, our analysis indicates you have installation method problem. We will offer you another replacement. Please return the chips that failed.
- return a 30/70 mix
Oh, so sorry. It looks like you did not fully correct you installation techniques. Perhaps we should build these boards for you here. Send us more money so we can start.

You see how this works? Many people there get very, very rich with this scam.

Great idea. Maybe we can start another Bitconnect and label it as ASIC designers instead of bitcoin trading robots.

Re: Japan’s GMO Plans to Sell 7nm Bitcoin Mining Boards Using Token Sale
by
digger888
on 29/01/2018, 03:00:38 UTC
Still just pie-in-the-sky PR to raise monies via their token sales.
Some recent insight re: 10nm and lower nodes. Pay attention to the parts about the cost and number of masks/steps needed when using non-EUV light sources.

Current node size points and costs

*can* 7nm be done without EUV?  A very cautious 'yes' if cost and production rates are no object but it will NOT be happening in this year before Q4. Otherwise 2019 is still a very safe guesstimate before any production-ready processes are starting up assuming the remaining hurdles to the EUV sources can be solved.

Thanks for sharing the link as it is a very informative presentation. There may be a situation whereby Bitmain can release 10nm before going to 7nm. It may not be a significant leap but it is an incremental improvement. If I were running Bitmain, I would release 10nm to sell more hardware. Let's the GMO and other competitors struggle and waste valuable resources on the 7nm technology. Once the 7nm technology is released, it will only be an incremental improvement from Bitmain's 10nm. After the competition completed their development, I would quickly copy it and release Bitmain's 7nm. I would flood the market with 7nm antminers at a lower price and take out my competitors before they can recoup their R&D cost.

Do you think that I am ruthless enough to apply for a job at Bitmain?

Yes, took power factor as 1. You should be good with these. What is the weather like in your area? In summer, the amps might go up a little bit so don't overload for continuous operation. Thanks.

Summer is hot and dry where I live; hence, I am planning to use evaporated cooling. It is a lot cheaper than A/C. I am thinking about ultrasonic evaporation but the water is too hard here.

You can easily run 280 S9 miners on a 500KVA transformer. 220 or 240 either should work. Thanks.

Is this what you did?

500kva * 0.8  = 400kva / 1.4k => 285 units

on 12/01/2018, 04:04:24 UTC
Check this email out:

Dear ViaBTC users:

In the past 14 months, ViaBTC cloud mining service has covered over 50 countries and regions in the globe, served tens of thousand cryptocurrency investors and received great popularity all over the world. We are very grateful for your love and support and will continue trying our best in providing more investment options.

Recently, due to policy changes, some of our long-term hosting partners are facing a crisis of farm closure as mining resources in Mainland China become more scarce, leading to rocketing costs of our cloud mining operation. To guarantee the long run of cloud mining, ViaBTC has no choice but have to readjust our maintenance fees. The arrangements are as follows:

1. S9 contracts: From UTC time 8:00 12th January 2018, maintenance fee ratio for S9 contracts will be adjusted from 6% to 50%.
2. L3/D3 contracts: Maintenance fees for L3/D3 contracts will REMAIN 6% and L3/D3 redemption is NOT yet available.

S9 contract redemption supported

If you disagree with our readjustment of maintenance fees, you can choose to terminate your S9 cloud mining contracts in advance and let us redeem all your contracts with a price of $300 per share (calculated against real-time rate into BCH at time of payment).

Please refer to our follow up announcement for redemption time.

How to apply for S9  contract redemption

1. Please apply with an email to support@viabtc.com BEFORE UTC time 12:00 18th January 2018 or your application will be EXPIRED.
2. Please send application with your registered Email address in ViaBTC or your application will be INVALID.
3. Please include your ViaBTC account details (eg. Your registered Email, binded mobile and miner nickname).
4. Please WRITE DOWN the following sentences on a piece of paper, take a picture and have it attached to your Email:

I, Account nickname,
(Registered Email in ViaBTC: XXX; Binded mobile: XXX)
agree to the following terms of redemption of all my S9 cloud mining contracts at a price of $300 PER Share

I got the later December batch and currently, UPS is shipping the L3+ to me. I was given the tracking ID's when they departed from China, so this might be an issue isolated to the Dec 1-10 batch.

You are lucky. I ordered a few L3+ from December 11 to 20 batch but I received no update so far. I will give them several days before contacting them.
