Re: Ubuntu 13.04 includes Bitcoin-QT in Software Center - is this new?

Yes you are downloading a binary. Don't worry the software make sure the download is actually compiled by the ppa account holder (or the person responsible for a package in the repositories), But you would have to actually trust that person not to inject something bad in the code.

But again if you are not checking the source code and compiling it without reviewing the code. IMO it is the same thing. You would have to trust someone.

Who is the person/people responsible for packages in the Ubuntu Software Center?

Thanks for the site, I use it often (constantly!)

I would love if the URL reflected the current options selected, to make bookmarking/sharing easier.

A drink (as in my original post) now would cost around 0.0053 BTC (assuming $1.25 cost and $235 exchange rate).

Bitcoin use in Africa has been in the news lately. Are any Africans on the forum that can give us insight into how well-known SI prefixes are on that continent, especially in the poorer nations?

When mtgox reaches $100 USD/ BTC, is this the symbolic value when everyone is going to sell? Possibly causing a crash? I've spoken to a few people now who plan on cashing out at $100 USD.

No.

USD isn't the only currency.

The truth is that they are spending money to get more newbies sucked in their preorder scheme. With already at least 20k preorders in the backlog and without even a working prototype. It's a shame.

It's more than just a shame, it's a crime.

Why does BFL's CEO have the same name and is from this same HUGE city as a convicted fraudster?

I can answer this one at least definitively. This is due to the fact that Sonny Vleisides, an officer at BFL, is in fact the very same convicted thief and has admitted as much publicly...just search. Course BFL in typical BFL fashion did not voluntarily admit this until confronted. Occasionally one BFL mouthpiece or another denies that Sonny is currently their CEO and I believe they claim Nasser is now, but I don't follow this ridiculous drama as closely as I did when I was actually considering an order with them.

There are liars and convicted thieves in positions of authority at butterfly labs. Caveat emptor.

You seem to have posted a strong criticism for "not follow[ing] this ridiculous drama".

This drama has been unfolding for months bud, none of this is new. Really, just do a search, you can read all about it at your leisure and make your own call. I've made mine.

Precisely my point. We all know your opinion, so why continue trolling threads about it?
Just because someone says something that goes against your current beliefs/feelings doesnt mean theyre trolling. he is stating facts, not trolling.

I don't believe I stated an opinion one way or the other, but the rabid sentiment against is getting old fast. Was simply pointing out the dichotomy between his word and action, by quoting him out of context.

There ya go buddy, FTFY.

My account wasn't created two weeks ago like yours was. This stuff is common knowledge to those of us that make it their business to keep up on the goings on of mining hardware vendors. I also keep an eye on ASICMiner and Avalon threads, and while there was something to monitor I also watched BTCFPGA threads. So what? This *IS* a BTC forum after all, and this *IS* the mining speculation sub-forum.

Clearly, my bitcointalk.org account age dictates my depth of knowledge. You sir, win the internet. Congratulations.

Is there seriously anybody who uses bitcointalk who doesn't know what BFL is, and what they are about by now? Why the hell are they spending $1800(so far) to buy up all the ads here.

$1,800 isn't really all that much money when you consider 2 Mini Rigs probably pay for it.

75 is too fast too soon. I expect a consolidation around 60-65, maybe a few minor spikes trying to break up but with no real momentum.

This is what my money's on. Literally.

Berkshire Hathaway (A) can swing $2000 a day, but since it is ~$150,000 a share this is only 1.33%. Let’s hope that Bitcoin gets to where it will be having similar $2000 swings. :-)

Off topic, but it would be huge publicity to get a quote from Warren Buffet on his thoughts about Bitcoin.

Re: mBTC: At what point should the community use this as the default unit?
by

I really think we're making too big a deal of this. The "general public" already deals with this in $.  Ex: $50B. $50M. $50K. $50. 50 cents.  we choose the appropriate units depending on the amount. I'm sure people will figure out how to do the same with bitcoin.

I understand your point, but the billion/million/thousand specifiers aret (relatively unknown) descending SI units in an currency looking for recognition. Most people still can't differentiate between megs and gigs on their smartphone. Ask a hundred people on the street which is worth more, a BTC, mBTC or uBTC and I'll be surprised if more than 10% even notice that mBTC != uBTC.

To that end, doesn't it make sense to start using mBTC as the standard unit now, since that's the way the world will be headed if BTC/USD price continues to rise?

As BTC goes up in price, BTC holders will buy bigger things with Bitcoins

BTC will be good for houses, cars, other investments, vacations, jewelry, etc.

We can buy sodas with fiat.

Just like stocks and treasuries, etc. Nobody sells them to buy a soda.

This is a losing strategy for mass adoption.

I get your point about making it user friendly - although to me it makes little difference whether prices are displayed in BTC or mBTC. Consistency could be an issue here though. It certainly becomes less user friendly if prices are displayed in BTC in one place but mBTC elsewhere. Maybe best to stick to BTC and learn to deal with leading 0s?

Or switch to mBTC and have them become familiar with SI units from the get-go? Surely, people wil ask what mBTC stands for or why the m is small, at which point a discussion along the lines of "it's like megs and gigs".

mBTC is only the start. If Bitcoin gains wide adoption, there's no reason to think that uBTC won't eventually become the norm.

Ok, lag is a problem, but the price swing is fine

And a swing caused by lag would be... ?

I just meant $126 seemed a rather specific value. If you'd said that at $125 per BTC it will cost 0.01 BTC that would have seemed more logical. I know it doesn't make a difference, I just tend to expect people to choose round numbers when taking an arbitrary figure as an example.

I see. Yeah, I chose $126 versus $125 to help illustrate the eventual problem if BTC/USD prices increase. The numbers themselves are obviously irrelevant, I just wanted a concrete example most people can relate to.
