Ha, that it did. I hate when someone asks a question and all the replies are basically "Works For Me (TM)". But I guess that's exactly what we did, as well as shameless advertising.  Tongue

I only used one resistor on the DVI plug attached to the card. I use three on the VGA side of a dummy plug. Maybe one would work, maybe it wouldn't. The information I had said to use three, so I use three.  If resistors were $4/ea. it might matter a little more, but they're like $0.89 for 5.

Re: mining with two 5850 on an SLI mobo (without crossfire) - possible?

Thanks a bunch! The funny thing is I have already bought a crossfire board to replace my sli one. Guess I'll just build 2 mining rigs ^^

It's easy to get sucked in before you're profitable, so just be careful (unless you have money to burn, then it's just a fun hobby like Folding rigs)! But yeah, I'm waiting on a couple backordered 5850s to complete my third miner now ... and I started in late April Grin

I'll buy 3 of them from you for $150/ea since they're ruined!  Cool

This isn't useful for me as I'm doing all GPU mining, but well done on a great idea and good implementation! Good luck with this project!

oh boy, you just killed a bitcoin-dummy-plug industry in its infancy, how cruel.

HAHAHA!  Grin Just trying to help, and you know some people are always going to think that's too complex or dangerous for them, or are just plain lazy (nothing wrong with being lazy if you're willing [and able] to pay someone else not to be!).

You guys can feel free to send me money to make these for you!  Cool

Dummy plugs go for around $4.50 (including resistor cost), shipping + materials (padded envelope) is $9. So we're looking at $13.50 my cost for shipping one of these to Estonia.

So if you're up for one for 2BTC, I'm willing to do it. I'll ship one out within 1 business day of receipt of payment. Just PM me on here for payment details and to confirm that you've sent payment.

If you can find someone to make one and ship from Europe I think it'd probably be a much better deal, but I'm happy to help. I just can't let it cost me money, as I'm sure you understand.

As far as I know you can, because you're not using SLI or Crossfire to begin with. You want each card running separately. On Windows this will require monitors or a "VGA Dummy Plug" on each DVI connector.

Then they should both show up in your mining software. I was pretty confused about this at first myself (thank you, Tycho!), but now I've been bitten by the mining bug hard!  Cool

Re: Any 6990's in stock anywhere?

I've been looking for 6990s and even 5850s on [H] recently and no luck. One guy was selling a used 6950 that he claimed was "clocked exactly the same as a 6970" (which might be true for gaming, but does it have the same number of stream processors as a 6970?) for a fairly decent price. I considered buying it until I looked at the hardware comparison wiki and the $/MH/s ratio seemed very poor.

But just saying, I haven't seen 6990s anywhere because I would've grabbed at least one, and I'm currently waiting on a couple back-ordered 5850s as they're a good, reduced price and have an excellent $/MH/s ratio, IMO. But they're also nowhere to be found. A couple remain in stock for $189.99 on Newegg but that's hardly a good buy for 330MH/s.

I laughed a bit when people started talking about the supply of AMD video cards drying up ... until I tried to buy more. Seems like stocks of the 5-series cards are all but dried up (5770s are still available for a good price, $115, but those aren't gonna last forever) and even the high-end 6-series cards are being snapped up as soon as they're off the line as near as I can tell.

This is almost a blessing in disguise for me, though. Waiting on a couple parts for my third miner and then I have to take a break for awhile.  Grin

If there's still some interest in a few days I will figure out how much dummy plugs and resistors cost me and ship a few (worldwide).

I would just like to confirm that shorting the DVI connector on the card itself can destroy the card. Because it happened to me. Sapphire 5770, used a single 68Ohm resistor, card showed up in Catalyst and poclbm, seemed to be working fine ... and then I had to reboot for an unrelated reason. Win 7 would hard lock within 60 seconds of login. Even the reset button didn't work (which I didn't even think was possible). Pulled the card, works fine. Just got a replacement after ~2 weeks. How much money did that cost me, losing ~178MH/s for 2 weeks? So it's not worth it, boys.

I used this 5 Second Dummy Plug guide. It seemed like sound reasoning, but don't bet on it.

This is what I'm using now on 2 other cards - no problems whatsoever.

PM if interested in dummy plugs, I think I have 2 or 3 extras. 75 Ohm is the "ideal" resistor, apparently, but my local Radio Shack only stocks 68s and they seem to work fine. It's not hard to make them and 5 resistors cost a buck.

I would love to see PXE support on this. I downloaded .1a and couldn't get it working (UNetBootin kept saying the kernel image was missing or corrupt) but I'll try .1b now. Hoping this ends up being great, seems to have so much potential.

Does this support multiple GPUs out of the box, or will I need to do some CLI config? I'm not ignorant when it comes to Linux in general but I am currently ignorant about mining with Linux, so patience is appreciated. Wink

Thanks for your efforts!
