Re: [ANN] Storj - Decentralized Storage

Things will happen slowly at first, but once the network reaches a critical mass, the "tipping point", it is going to be self-sustainable and grow like an organic thing Smiley It is crucial to reach that critical mass first, and those part of it will probably be tech-savy.

This phase of the project is basically a closed beta, because just having 10k SJCX is not enough, you need to have been a crowdsale participant as well. So it basically is an invite-only closed beta. In later stages, anyone will be able to participate, so there is going to be the open beta stage too. Hopefully the devs will anounce a more precise timeline soon.

Anyway, this is one of the most exciting developements in the crypto world, and it is refreshing to see a real, need-fulfilling project alongside all those useless coins (that have a larger market cap then storj, btw, but that's another story and oddity of this world)

New hacks are announced basically every week. Having a storage system that is encrypted and only the user has the keys, for a cheap price: that is going to be a no-brainer.

Is it possible to mine this coin?

No, you can't mine it. It is a Counterparty asset, and all SJCX have been generated and locked already. Some of the SJCX have been distributed in the crowdsale, you can buy them on exchanges (poloniex for example), and when the project launches, those who share their spare storage ("farmers") will be rewarded with SJCX. And if you need some storage in the cloud, you'll have to get some SJCX to pay for it.

Due to the increase in value, the 10 000 SJCX "ticket" to enter the beta might be too steep for some.

The main question remains - whether "decentralization" is really something that people value.

People might not know that decentralization is what they need, but ever since the Snowden files, people started to realise that it might not be a good idea to hand over all your data to a single company and hope for the best. Most of the people I know now say  that there is no way they are going to upload anything sensitive/personal to Dropbox without encrypting it first. As far as I know, Dropbox/Google/Amazon/Apple clouds, they all have great uptime, but when it comes to security - just see the recent hacks. Dropbox also checks the md5-s of all files users upload against a database of known "copyright infringement" cases, and if your file is on the list, they might just delete it. And if you're the lucky one with an md5 collision Smiley , you can argue against the deletion, I guess.

The 10 000 SJCX minimum to participate in the beta was set before the price increase of the SJCX, if I recall correctly, at that time, the price hovered at around 4k satoshis, so the 10 000 SJCX was echivalent to 0.4 BTC. Now the price is about 3x as much. Maybe, if the devs need more beta-testers, they might lower the threshold, who knows.

I don't intend to be a naysayer, but people should maintain realistic judgement. I see a good chance that lots of early adopters will feel comfortable selling off their original 10,000 SJCX when the full network goes live.

That is one possible scenario, that need to be considered, yes. On the other hand, the early adopters might have a need for redundant, secure, online cloud backup too, so they might use (some of) their holdings to pay for the storage. Or only sell of part of their holdings, and keep the rest. We have no way of knowing, really. But sure, one possible scenario is price drop when storj goes live. Another possible scenario is a price increase, when people realize the full potential of the project. Compared with the market cap of other coins, storj has lots of room for increasing.

It is pretty hard to predict what will happen to the price of the coin (SJCX) after launch. We all tend to price the GB/year plans, it has been compared to Dropbox costs, Amazon costs, and so on. The truth is, there is a market out there, and price is driven, as always, by supply and demand. However, the implementation details are very important, too. For a solution with a nice GUI, that is easy to use, people will be willing to pay a decent price. If it is going to be hard for them to figure out how it all works.. then not so much.

I feel that Dropbox is popular not only because it fills a need (for online storage), but also because it is also easy to use, and it looks good.

Decentralized, secure cloud storage is something that will definitely be there for us in the future. It is actually surprising that we don't already have a solution like this readily available. But the truth is, there are a lot of challenges and questions to be answered, and the Storj project is already working on that -  it has a head-start.

Exact, despre asta e vorba. Daca dai click pe bitcoin, iti cere o adresa de email, cu explicatia ca daca esti inregistrat pe SpectroCoin, primesti direct bitcoin in cont, daca nu, primesti instructiuni pe email cum poti intra in posesia bitcoin. Interesant.

Automate Qiwi pentru bitcoin?
by

on 22/09/2014, 11:17:45 UTC
