Re: World's First School to Issue Academic Certificates via Bitcoin Blockchain
by

My old school certificates are a bit crumpled up after years stuffed into a cupboard. I'd want new ones if I needed to show them to someone, and if I had the option I'd prefer to show them a blockchain secured digital certificate. Paper certificates are too easily damaged, he blockchain ones are more durable.

He's in Japan and been formally with embezzlement. He's probably being held on remand in a Japanese prison until his trial unless the police are still holding him in a police station for more questioning. Japanese prisons are tough places, you don't get much food, so he might look slim by the time he goes to court.

Re: What happened to the original Satoshi account on here?
by

The account was locked as a security precaution. He probably won't get it unlocked unless he signs from an address that he controls. I would ask him the reason for leaving the development team so abruptly and not touching his BTC. Afterall, he could have just sold majority of them if he have control to it.

After the forum got hacked Theymos advised us all to change our passwords, especially if they were short or a common phrase. Satoshi probably had a strong password so it's not probable that his account was hacked, but even the best programmers aren't infallible. Sometimes they use a weak password to save time when logging in. I suppose it's always faintly possible his account was hacked so Theymos would have to ask him to sign a message given the importance of his account.

Is Gemini closed over the weekend, or just zero interest?

Of course it's not closed over the weekends. You can see the level of interest from the trades that occurred during the last 17 hours. The biggest trades were for 3 bitcoins, 2.12 bitcoins, and 4 bitcoins. All the other trades were for amounts below one bitcoin. Trades for 0.02 bitcoins make up the majority of trades. The trade for 0.00 bitcoins must have been for an amount below 0.01 bitcoins.

Few Testarossas stayed with one owner for 30 years. Those who bought it new got what they wanted. Those who bought them dirt cheap 10-15 years ago got a taste of the dreams of their youth. And those who bought them as an investment at half the price they are now, got what they wanted. I've yet to meet an unhappy Testarossa owner.

I've owned a few borderline supercars but would never go overboard into a proper one. They invoke some violent reactions from people. And lower tier cars as an 'investment' rather than the blue chip stuff are a mirage if you own them for long periods. They'll break even maybe but all that maintenance and taxation adds up rapidly.

It's a different matter if you've bought within the last few years maybe but they're only worth what others'll pay. Not the most liquid thing you can ever own. I think a shit ton of people will be burned with the more modest stuff. Old style BMW M3 Evo Sport's go for up to $150,000. I nearly bought one at $10,000 but it was a dog. That doesn't smell sustainable to me.

Surely if you drive around in them you have to pay huge insurance bills each year. Don't those bills add up to a super car's value after 30 years? An 18 year old would be charged as much as a lambo cost to insure it. A thirty year old would pay much less, but still a considerable sum each year, and that's only if he'd never made a claim.

Re: Bitcoin and Porn
by
fish731
on 11/10/2015, 15:28:32 UTC
What? Bitcoin is perfect for porn sites because of its anonymity. If porn sites started ripping you off then they wouldn't survive for long with such a bad rep. News would quickly spread that people wernt getting what they paid for. Most sites will probably use a bitcoin payment processor too.

How will they verify your age if they adopt bitcoin as the payment system? Most legitimate sites out there won't let you get access to their stuffs without verifying that part to prevent getting their licence getting banned! Wink

BTW, why do you worry about paying through credit card?  They won't disclose your personal information Smiley
They won't reveal your information but someone in your family might see the bill and ask "Why there's a bill from a porn site" Which is no fun at all  Tongue
And sorry to say this but nowadays kids are smarter than you thought, they can always bypass the age verification Roll Eyes

File sharing sites almost destroyed the porn industry. The porn sites will be more concerned about you uploading their porn to a file sharing site than checking your age. If they get you to pay by debit card and imprint your porn with a secret digital fingerprint they can sue if you upload it to a file sharing site. That's impossible for them if you pay by bitcoin and access them through a VPN.

Well, now that the CTFC is involved, I imagine exchanges are not going to want to attract undue attention, but it is a double edged sword regarding their "popularity" and continued existence.

Pressure needs to be placed on the exchanges, even though exchanges are responsible for most of this, I can imagine non exchange bots are also involved.
And I have a feeling that pressure is on the way...

Its About Sharing

Can the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission do anything about exchanges outside the US? It wouldn't be easy for it to prosecute a Chinese exchange, and the Chinese government seems happy to let their exchanges continue wash trading. The US has no extradition treaties with China. It seemed powerless to prosecute Mark Karples and he was based in Japan which is far more US friendly.

Re: The $1 Million Dollar Bitcoin
by
fish731
on 11/10/2015, 13:09:31 UTC
If it stayed alive long enough and the dollar still existed then it's borderline inevitable that there'll be a million dollar coin one day. At today's buying power? It would've had to have conquered the world.

In a thousand years there might be a one million dollar note if inflation keeps going up. At that point I'd guarantee there will be at the least a one million dollar bitcoin, if bitcoin still exists by then. In a thousand years all bitcoins will have been mined, and only the network fees will support the miners, so the miners won't be able to dump the price down. Think about prices of everyday goods from 30 or 40 years ago, and what you pay for those same goods now. In a thousand years those goods will have astronomical prices by today's standards.

Because the wankcoin dev bears the name of this coin he could inspire confidence in it by posting here more often rather than delegating it to others. If that's impossible he could share access to the wankcoin account with the other devs so they could make posts as wankcoin.

will there be a new version release today?

Not today. Scooby should have a better idea as to when soon and will make an announcement.

Burst coin uses a different type of mining to normal that relies on the amount of hard drive space you let it use for storage. You might be able to mine that on a laptop but I'm not sure.

Re: Nothing-at-Stake & Long Range Attack on Proof-of-Stake (Consensus Research)
by
fish731
on 11/05/2015, 17:29:41 UTC
I guess no one has any found any fatal flaws in this research then?

What are the next steps Kushti, were you planning on testing a modified algo in a test coin?

No any critical flaws found in Nxt-like proof-of-stake. On other hand, no any strict formalization made yet as well.

So there are two things to be done:

1. Formalized model showing Nakamoto's property could be met in proof-of-stake with contribution to multiple forks allowed(in other cases there are other problems with formalization). Simulations show the property is seems to be met, thanks to cumulative difficulty working more or less ok as fork selector function(btw, PoS coins with longest chain rule have problems here, at least).
I'm now talking with guys much more skilled in CS/math about possibility of the truly formal framework.

2. Practical contributions to Nxt / other projects around. Nxt's algo seems to be pretty safe, though block delays distribution is needed to be better(closer to average value). It will reduce or mb even eliminate incentive to contribute to multiple forks(by trying to do private branch attacks, then share private forks, then we have majority of forgers having multiple-branch forging with N@S possible as result in such environment). I hope some improvements will be made in 1.7/1.8.

And yeah, "test coin"(don't like "coin" word here, I would like to call it "experimental blockchain engine for hackers"). Making some changes now, so it will be possible to switch Qora's PoS to Nxt's by changing 1 line of code(and introduce other consensus models easily). Then yeah, multiple branching will be introduced in Scorex. Some non-consensus things will be tested as well, e.g. Bill White's scalability proposal etc.

Will you be integrating the finished thing into Qora before Nxt to see how it performs on a main net?

Re: What happens to Bitcoin when free energy is available?
by
fish731
on 11/05/2015, 17:26:34 UTC
Energy can't be free. What can be is abundant, and we are going to get there eventually. When they try to tax stuff like the sun, they know they are lossing the battle and asking for a revolution. Fuck paying for the god damn sun! the sun is for everyone, everyone should be free to install solar panels and get "free" energy in the economical sense.

As for BTC, its only good news, since it means everyone being able to benefit from abundant energy without costs beyond the initial installation of the machine will be able to be a miner = stronger network.

It depends how hot the sun is where you live. I know someone with solar panels who calculated they would pay for themselves in about 150 years. He doesn't live in a very hot country.

Is there any way to approximate how many shadow bids/asks are hiding in the orderbooks?  Or at least find out after the fact?  Just watching what effects the bitfinex price makes me skeptical that the visible walls are at all representative.

I don't think there is any way to find out anything about the stop buy and sell orders on Bitfinex. However, there is information about how many Bitcoins have been lent out for leveraged trading.
