Right now the Bitcoin is about anonymity. It uses a protocol called TOR (The Onion Router) that allows the giver and receiver to remain anonymous, which makes it dangerous. In my book, it's used by the criminal underworld.

Wow!! thats a lot of depreciation in one year.

It doesn't matter what the original price was or how old/new it is. It's not profitable anymore and people buy it for only novelty purposes or just to play around with it. These are available on eBay quite often for about 1000 bucks. I bought a 10 GH/s Jalapeno for 1400 just a few days ago.

I'm interested to play around with it. I'll pay Rs. 900 for it if it's in good condition (no scratches, etc). I can arrange a meet in Mumbai. Can pay cash or bitcoin.

I was looking for something like a Galaxy S2 or S3 but I didn't get any good deals so I'm closing this offer. I've decided to sell my BTC and buy it with cash directly.

Re: Is logic applied below is correct to human behaviour?

Generally, people can be categorized in three kinds
I don't think human behavior is simple enough to be categorized into just three kinds. What about the lazy people, naive people, people with no ambition, people who're capable of doing things but don't have the resources, people who're bad at risk management, etc. The list could go on.

It is my basic assumption that, when people do something great, money it self comes as reward.

The real world doesn't work like it does in fairy tales. Sometimes bad people are rewarded and good people lose. There are also people who've chosen not to profit from their inventions/discoveries.

Re: Bitcoin is...
by

Nobody is forcing anyone to use Bitcoin. Different people have different motivations for using it. Some use it for making money, some use it to be free from government restrictions on money transfers, some people use it to protect their privacy when making embarassing purchases, some use it because they don't like their purchases profiled by numerous companies they'll never hear about, some use it for political purposes and so on. The free market will decide its future. The government will try their best to regulate it but they'll fail because you can't put handcuffs on an invisible hand. Globalization can be the result of widespread adoption of new technologies but it's not necessarily the intent.

I've lost about $1500 few years ago gambling on a few sites when that was all I had. I thought I was being really clever by making small bets but I ended up losing everything in a few hours. It screwed me financially. I still have the habit to do it with small amounts when I see someone gambling on the street. It's illegal where I live and it hasn't stopped me from doing it.

Re: [ANN] Shorten Your Bitcoin Address to a Rememberable URL
by
fp

With regards to the bitcoin client, I get your point, I never thought of that, It would have to be handled by bitcoin devs themselves

That still relies on trusting someone which goes against the spirit of bitcoin because the protocol is trustless.

Most people know the first/last few letters of their bitcoin address and would surely notice any changes.

I'm not sure who your target user is but while people might know their own bitcoin address, when they send their user.mybtcaddr.com address to someone, the receiver has no idea if the address was tamperered with or changed even temporarily and this could be quite an expensive mistake.

Programs like vanitygen can generate similar looking addresses.

The following are generated that start with 1mfr (from your username as an example) and end with 3

Code:
Address: 1mrfyA3HstyMjGrdVRQQCsGoSR8VsExy3
Address: 1mrfESSa9PpSpgsdiszN1T3ABG1uqrEd3
Address: 1mrfJJBJa9Cq6JNMNE9VHeac4RexzM7t3
Address: 1mrfokfnEi8fMWH4oa5kzz28aDYZFCLp3

It would be good to be able to come up with an anti-tampering idea though, if anyone can think of anything.

I think it will be really difficult to achieve that in way that makes it really simple for the average person but I could be wrong.

What's stopping you from altering the TXT record later with your own BTC address? I'll admit though it's a clever idea.

If you have not mentioned that it is accidental mistake from your side as of now, register unauthorized compromised account transfer

Isn't that filing a false complaint accusing someone of a crime he didn't commit?

I live in the states. and it's the midwest, south crowd that have negative sterotypes for indians

Aware me on this?

In India, we have negative stereotypes for all ethnicities and minority groups but we like pointing fingers when some other country says something about us.

What will happen to Bitcoin if the government decides to cut us off the Internet
by
fp
on 25/06/2014, 10:45:34 UTC
Although highly unlikely, there are countries that do this already (eg. North Korea). Suppose India decides to do the same and implement only an Intranet for the citizens, what would happen to the blockchain? Since we already have a copy of the blockchain before they shut off the internet, will be be using bitcoins with 0 confirmations since all the mining pools are outside India? Or will the blockchain get split? What would happen if they turn the internet on again after that?

Since we have only a handful of ISPs here, isn't it also easy for them to carry out Sybil attacks on the peers and disrupt the network?
