My primary source of income at the moment is government money, and I don't spend much, so all I can think is "sweet, cheap Bitcoin".

I like that, Government money.  This is going to be rude, but has it ever occurred to you that that is my money, not magical government money?
This is an international forum, so we are probably not actually talking about the same money Wink

As long as this point has not been reached, it is incredibly silly to worry over a few dollars in a few weeks.

I just don't come to the same conclusion you are.
If Coinvaluation wants to provide a sweaky-clean Bitcoin variant some people might want to chose that. Everybody else would just use Bitcoin as it is.
I don't think I have use for the things Coinvaluation plans to provide, but if other people think they do what do I care?

I concur. Who cares if they do this?

It's like people bitching about Facebook privacy.

"Oh but they should be more private with my shit, blah blah sign my petition share my post blah blah"

Or stop using a service that doesn't provide what you (claim to) want?

"I can't do that it's not practical my friends/family are using it"

How about: Stop bitching, get out of your comfort zone, and find some people who have the same philosophical ideals to be friends with/do business with.

It's not that stupid.

What would happen if there was a big private blockchain "secretly" double spending?

Say it currently had 48% and was a few blocks behind the original blockchain -- and everybody knows it.

What's to stop you mining on the short chain but spending on the long chain?

Now let's make a Big Assumption: people bandwagon on this new chain if it's at 48% in order to selfishly double spend when it finally takes over the old chain.

If that is the case, then surely it is rational for me to do the same thing but when it's at 47%
and if that is the case, then surely it is rational for me to do the same thing but when it's at 46%
...
etc

They're stating that the initial threshold is actually very low. They're stating that rational malicious entities mine on the short chain even if the short chain has, say, 5% of the computational power.

I don't know how they take multiple private chains into the analysis or what constant they're using for that Big Assumption.

It does sound a bit dodgy to me; I don't think there's reason to believe this will happen any time soon. But the paper isn't completely without thought..

I think part of the problem there is that it's manual data entry that has to be maintained regularly

Small project ideas

Hi all,

I really want to push out a site or something, make some friends on here and start contributing.

To get the ball rolling, I know the speculators could probably use a charting site that charts currencies you can't trade directly (e.g. USD/PPC). Haven't found anything like that yet..

Anybody have any cool ideas for small projects?

Developer here, been thinking about transitioning into the Bitcoin economy for a while now and think it's time to get started.

I want to use the forums just be a part of the community, advertise my services, engage in discussion, etc.
