I have a feeling we are still running below the expected average, hopefully the variance makes a turn in our favor now!
We also have the feeling that we are running at a bit under average but hoping that it will even out... with three blocks in one day its looking up again.

Working on the banners, but RL is very very hectic right now so not getting much spare time. Still planning to contribute, just need to make some time!

Bitcoin sends some "change" back to a fresh address that's supposed to be in your wallet. What if somebody changed that to be in their wallet instead... Would you even notice?

Let's see how things went:

1. PayPal cuts off Wikileaks
2. Anonymous rallies people to target PayPal with LOIC DDoS
3. ...
4. People start getting arrested
5. Anonymous calls for people to cancel their Paypal accounts

How it should've been done:

1. PayPal cuts off Wikileaks
2. Anonymous calls for people to cancel their Paypal accounts

Major difference!

Re: Introduction: VHDL FPGA mining in Kintex XC7K325TL-2 devices Post #1

I'm targeting 3 parallel cores running at 200 MHz each for a hash rate of 600 MH/sec.   The power is phenomenal in the .9V low power part, only 5.2 watts, giving a figure of merit well over 100 MHashes/watt.

Interesting! Perhaps Artix boards will have a better $/MHash ratio? Any good synthesis runs you could share with us?

I see that mpfrank has rolled his own pipelined VHDL...

I reposted your request in mpfrank's thread

Any chance of seeing the code you developed? I am very curious and would like to try it on the LX150 devboard I just purchased.

I'm taking the plunge and getting the ZTEX LX150 board to teach myself about FPGAs, and provide feedback on the real-life performance of the LX150.

I'm a software developer and electronics hobbyist at heart, but FPGAs are a different animal completely so support by the experienced people here will be much appreciated  Wink  Grin

I would, too, if there wasn't the issue with the software: where to get the ISE Logic edition for a reasonable price (<<1kEUR)?

Yeah, that's the main issue here. There's always the 30-day trial to start with. I was actually going to write Xilinx and see if they are willing to contribute some ISE licenses to this project, provided that it is properly open sourced. I wouldn't write them however until we have a clearly stated project license type in the first post, or a webpage. Xilinx seems to support educational and non-commercial institutions, I was able to find some references to Xilinx license donations.

I don't know about the others, but I am in it for the fun of developing a board. The board you linked may be a very good start to get FPGA developers to write code, but once our board is go, it won't be cost effective (unless you figure their support and warranty are worth the price). I am not arguing against the board: it is good for early adopters, but eventually we should beat it.

I agree 100%, that's exactly why I posted this, perhaps not being too clear about it. I treat this as a reference point, perhaps to learn from the design also.

I might get the board just to get a start with FPGA's, but otherwise it is reassuring that we seem to be on the right track complexity and price-wise.

This is a scam, you are guaranteed to lose your money.

fpgaminer's post basically summed up and closed the discussion, and we are doing the scammers a favor by keeping this thread alive.

I suggest that this thread is closed and buried until somebody comes clean with some proof.

For a clock source: you will probably need two: one for the FPGA, one for the MSP430. For the FPGA, I suggest the ASEM1-100.000MHZ-LC-T: it's small (3.2x2.5mm2) and should be sufficiently stable. For the MSP430, it seems a 25MHz source is needed, like the ASEM1-25.000MHZ-LC-T.

I am not very happy with using a "normal" crystal, because they are much larger then these SMD-MEMS oscillators. One question I am not sure of: can we maybe get away with feeding the FPGA only 25MHz? Then we could save one oscillator.

Consider this design:

The ZTEX USB-FPGA 1.15d LX-150 based, with a Cypress EZ-USB for flashing, feeding the FPGA with data and USB communication. Uses only one 24MHz oscillator, some schematics available on their site:
http://www.ztex.de/usb-fpga-1/usb-fpga-1.15.e.html

By the way the price of this one beats the Opal board I mentioned earlier. Got an email quote at a unit price of 357EUR, power supply not included.

I was wondering if anyone had a dev board they were playing with? If so, what model? The only one I was able to find online was a monster 995$ 4x pci-e card with a ton more features than are needed. It also happened to be out of stock.

As for dev boards, the $995 is probably the "Avnet Spartan-6 LX150T Development Kit" (http://goo.gl/S8oHN). This is a LX-150T board (note the T). The upside is that includes the ISE Logic Edition software, node locked to the LX-150T device. Normally the unlocked ISE Logic costs ~$3000

The cheapest board that I found at $750 is this:
http://i.imgur.com/uNDK3.jpg
The Opal Kelly EM6010-LX150. USB 2.0, externally powered, and with a LX-150 (no T). http://goo.gl/LbCWu

It doesn't include an ISE LE license though, so unless you already own one (I certainly don't) you won't be a happy customer.

For volume orders (50+), the price of the EM6010-LX150is $649,99. Another price reference point for us perhaps. Still way above the design target cost for the Modular FPGA Miner.

I do believe that this pool has potential, which is why I stuck with it through the first very unlucky week. And then wham - 3 blocks in a single day.

I will create a couple of banners for the frontend and forum sigs. I'm no PHP developer, but I'll have a look at the code anyway and see if I can contribute any ideas on how to improve.

basically we define a round as the period of time between payouts so you won't see round stats change till we hit 120 confirms on this first block.

What happens if another block is found before the first one has 120 confirms? How are the payout shares calculated then?

The site offers no proof whatsoever, and just attempts to pass itself as credible by posting claims of performance. Or promises of providing proof.

Consider Artforz who made his own ASIC miner - he had no problems sharing quite a few technical details about his design. Nobody managed to replicate his results because of the huge initial investment required.

Epoxy on chips for preventing reverse engineering? There are sites on the net where you mail them your ASIC, and they will sand it down layer by layer taking pictures at high magnification.

Only thing to be hidden here is that the mythical ASIC doesn't exist. I would say that this is an elaborate scam attempt. Even if just a few people fall for it, it will still have paid off. Expect delays, stories of "Paypal problems", requests for additional money wires.

Apologies, had no idea that the chip was not yet on the market. I guess the spartan 6 is as good as it gets for the time being.

It took 2 years for the Spartan-6 to become widely available in numbers since announcement, so the Artix-7 is somewhere on the horizon. Interesting to look at, but will be out of reach probably until 2013.
